LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced the Softball All-Conference Teams for the 2022 season. All-Conference consists of a First and a Second Team each made up of 11 student-athletes (1 Catcher, 2 Pitchers, 4 Infielders, 3 Outfielders, 1 Designated Hitter / Utility Player).
The conference has also rolled out its major awards, including Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Those were awarded to the following:
Player of the Year - Arizona Shreck (Penn State Berks)
Pitcher of the Year - Kyla Benner (Penn College)
Rookie of the Year - Madelyn Lehigh (Penn State Harrisburg)
Coach of the Year - Mandi Baer (Penn State Harrisburg)
Shreck has had a tremendous year at the plate, helping facilitate an offense that leads the United East in scoring. The sophomore has been an RBI machine as her 50 this season not only leads the conference but also ranks 17th in all of Division III. Schreck has been consistent at the plate all year, swinging a .479 which ranked 2nd in the conference but her power has been shown off too as her seven homers lead the United East. One of her most impactful performances came in a big win over Harrisburg late in the year as she went 3-for-4 from the dish with four RBI. Shreck also twirled the ball for her Berks squad, collecting 10 wins in the circle and striking out 51 batters.
Benner has been a Wildcat staple in the circle all season, earning her Pitcher of the Year honors. The senior has posted an ERA of just 1.46 across 95.2 innings pitched, which ranked third in the conference. Over that span, Benner also posted a record of 13-5, with her victories ranking third as well in the United East. Probably most impressive was her ability to keep runners off the bags, striking out 127 on the year (2nd in the conference) and holding opponents to a batting average of just .191. Most impressively, the Bethlehem, Pa. native posted two Perfect Games this season, in wins over Gallaudet and Morrisville.
Lehigh may have been a first year but she looked far from it as she took home Rookie of the Year honors. The Harrisburg, Pa. local posted a batting average of .485, which topped all player in the United East. Her 63 hits also led all batters in the conference, helped by 14 multi-hit games. Lehigh also finished the season with a league high .556 on-base percentage. One of the freshman’s top performances came in the season finale against Penn State Berks as she went 4-for-5 from the dish, driving in a pair of runs.
Coach Mandi Baer led her squad to a record of 26-12 overall and 20-6 in conference play, helping her earn Coach of the Year honors. Baer led her squad to be one of the top offensive producing teams in the country as their batting average of .392 tops all of Division III. The production at the plate has led to 433 hits which was over 40 more than any other United East program. Baer also led seven players to All-Conference nods, including the Rookie of the Year.
