LANCASTER, Pa. - The Lancaster Bible College Men’s Volleyball team hoisted the first ever United East Championship trophy as the top-seeded Chargers defeated second-seeded Cairn University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Chargers (15-13) not only are United East Champions, but also earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship. Who they will play and where they will be going will be released at 10 a.m. on Monday.
In the opening set, Lancaster Bible got out to an 8-3 lead to start the match and was able to maintain a comfortable distance from their foes through the end of the stanza. The Chargers carried that moment into the second as they put together a 15-3 run to close out the set. The Highlanders battled back in set three as they took a late 21-19 lead, but the top-seed prevailed with a 6-1 run to seal the victory.
The Charger offense was firing on all cylinders as they registered a hitting percentage of .385. Nine service aces also helped the home side to the Championship crown.
That offense flowed through Christian Herr, who tallied 26 assists to go along with five aces. He’d be tabbed the Most Valuable Player of the Championship. Dawson Forney was on the opposite end of Herr’s sets, registering a team-high ten kills. He was aided by Jake Rotelle and Jacob Yoder, who each finished with eight.
In the back row, Ben Latham played a solid role from the libero position as he finished the match with 12 digs.
The Highlanders were led by Sam Poirier, who racked up a team-best seven kills. Josh Adler was the primary setter, accruing 16 assists. Cairn finishes out its season with a record of 7-14.
