Clarks Summit and Penn State Abington Advance in First Round Softball Games

LATHAM, N.Y. - The 2024 United East Softball Championship opened on Wednesday afternoon with two First Round Games on the campuses of Penn State Abington and Keystone College.

Skye Division - #5 Clarks Summit University def. #4 Keystone College - 6-0

On the Skye side, #5 seeded Clarks Summit traveled to #4 seed Keystone College and, making their first playoff appearance since the 2012 season, the Defenders opened with three runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating the host Giants by a score of 6-0. 

Sara Castillo went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a stolen base and Maddison Atkins hit a home run in the 7th inning as Clarks Summit piled up nine hits in the afternoon.  In the circle, Kylee MIller threw a complete game shutout, only giving up 3 hits on 71 pitches across all 7 innings and struck out six batters.

For the Giants, Courtney Cienki had nine strikeouts in the circle while Elle Olivero, Isabella Benitez, and Angelina Morley picked up hits.

Clarks Summit advances to the Skye Division double-elimination tournament to begin on Friday morning where they will take on the #1 seed, and host, Wilson College at 10:00 am in Chambersburg, Pa.

Volt Division - #4 Penn State Abington def. #5 Lancaster Bible College - 6-5

In the Volt Division, #5 sided Lancaster Bible College traveled to #4 seed Penn State Abington and rallied with three runs in the 6th inning before the Nittany Lions scored in the bottom half to take the lead, and ultimately, the game.

Lancaster Bible scored three runs in the 6th, all with two outs, to tie the game 5-5 after Noelle Martin’s two RBI single and Alyssa Paulson’s RBI single.  Abington responded right away as Marlena Hacker led off bottom of the 6th for Penn State Abington with a triple and was knocked in by Isabella Antosiewicz to take a 6-5 lead.  The Nittany Lions held on in the top of the 7th to pull out the win.

Ava Livingston went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Antosiewicz went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Nittany Lions as Gretchen Yanss threw 136 pitches in the circle, striking out eight batters and inducing 10 fly outs.  Lancaster Bible was led by Martin who went 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI while Alyssa Hamilton had a home run and picked up two hits as well.

Penn State Abington advances to the Volt Division double-elimination tournament to begin on Friday morning where they will take on the #1 seed, and host, Penn State Harrisburg at 10:00am.
