Wildcats Drop Game One of NCAA Tourney

BETHLEHEM, Pa - The no. 4 seed Penn College Wildcats (30-11)  fell to no. 1 regional host Moravian University (31-8) in game one of the double-elimination NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.

The United East Softball Champ winners, Penn College saw the first action of the regional tournament with a noon start against Moravian University as they battled in an extra inning (8 inn) 2-1 loss. The Wildcats will look to avenge themselves tomorrow against the loser of game two, no. 2 Roanoke College.

Game 1: Moravian def. Penn College - 2-1 (8 inn.)

The Greyhounds of Moravian saw the first run of the afternoon with an RBI to second to take a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats tied the contest in the top of the 4th inning with a powerful RBI single to right center field by the junior from Williamsport, Mackenzie Weaver. The next three innings all ended with the match tied up before the Greyhounds registered one last run in the bottom of the 8th to secure a 2-1 victory.

For the Wildcats, four batters registered one hit, with junior Madison Herriman leading the way with two hits and a run. Weaver recorded the lone RBI of the contest for Penn College to go along with her hit. Hailey DeBrody and Madison Shaffer also seen action for the Wildcats. Additionally, Weaver pitched seven innings, striking out four batters and allowing two runs.

What’s Next 

No. 4 Penn College Wildcats will face No. 3 Roanoke College tomorrow, May 17 with a 1:30 p.m. start time. The winner of the contest will go on to face the loser of no. 3 Muskingum University v. no. 1 Moravian University at 4:00 p.m.
