2002 Men's Soccer Pre-Season Coaches Poll
Arcadia Picked to Repeat in Men's Soccer
Aston, PA - Defending champion Arcadia University is picked to repeat as Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s soccer champion, according the PAC pre-season coach’s poll.
The Knights enter the season ranked 12th in the nation and were a near unanimous choice in the PAC poll earning eight of a possible nine first place votes and 80 total points.
“We’re honored to be picked as the pre-season favorite to sin the PAC,” said Arcadia head coach Tom Carlin. “The PAC continues to get stronger each season and we’re anxious to get started on a new season.”
Misericordia, the PAC runner-up last season, is second with 68 while Eastern, a PAC semi-finalist a year ago, is third with 60 points. Cabrini, also a PAC semi-finalist last season, earned on first place vote and is fourth with 55 points. Wesley rounds out the top five with 50 points.

Aston, PA - The Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) released its All-Conference Team for Menâs Soccer Wednesday and for the second straight year, Arcadia University placed five players on the First Team including two-time PAC Player of the Year Tom DeGeorge (Sr., M, Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge). Wesley freshman Trevor Zimmer (F, Potomac, MD/Wooton) was named Rookie of the Year and Arcadia head coach Tom Carlin earned his third straight Coach of the Year honor.
DeGeorge, a two-time scoring champion in the conference, edged out Eastern senior Chris Hammacher (F, Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) with 45 points on 18 goals and nine assists. Zimmer, the top-scoring freshman in the PAC with 21 points, helped lead the Wolverines to a fifth place finish with a 12-7 overall record, 4-4 in the PAC. Carlin led Arcadia to its second straight Conference Title after a runner-up finish following the 2000 season.

Steve Houghton scored a goal in the 81st minute to lift the Arcadia University men’s soccer team to its second consecutive Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) championship with a 2-1 win over Misericordia on Saturday. The Knights (19-3) finish its second straight unbeaten season in the PAC, extending its win streak to 20 games, and have not lost at home in two years.
Houghton’s goal in the 81st minute broke open a 1-1 game and the Knights held on for the win. Ben Swan added an assist on the goal by Houghton.
Arcadia scored in the first half on a header by Anthony Boyle, who was named conference playoff most valuable player.
“Anthony controlled the air for us today,” Arcadia coach Tom Carlin says. He has been a real factor in all of our wins this season.”
Misericordia (12-5-2) tied the game in the second half after Arcadia scored an own goal on a free kick. The Cougars’ goalie, Dave Kern, had 10 saves in the loss as Arcadia outshot Misericordia 12-3.
The Knights, who are ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, advance to the NCAA tournament for the second season. Last year, Arcadia won twice in the tournament before losing to the number one team in the country, Messiah.
“Winning the PAC was one of our goals and I am proud of our players for accomplishing that,” says Carlin. “But now we have to move on and concentrate on our next goal, winning the National Championship.”
This was the third straight year that Arcadia and Misericordia have met in the PAC Championship. The Cougars won in 2000, 1-0. The Knights also beat Misericordia 2-1 in the regular season. Freshman Ralph Giangiulio had three saves in the win.
Tuesday, November 5, 2002- Semifinals

Glenside, PA - Ylber Mezani scored a goal in regulation and added the game-winning penalty shot as Arcadia extended its conference win streak to 19 with a victory over Cabrini 2-1 (4-3 penalty kicks) in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs. The Knights (18-3 overall) advance to host second-seeded Misericordia, which also needed penalty kicks in a 1-0 (4-3 PK) win over Eastern in the other semifinal game, in the PAC Championship game on Saturday, November 9.
The Knights, ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, trailed 1-0 at halftime after Sean Dugan scored for Cabrini (8-10 overall). Arcadia’s Mezani scored early in the second half. The Arcadia offense kept good pressure on the Cavaliers but were unable to score in the second half.
In the penalty kicks, Mezani scored the fourth goal for the Knights, with Ben Swan, Tom DeGeorge and Scott Wimsey adding other goals. For Cabrini, Michael Rennie, Anthony Pepe and Michael O’Reilly each scored on penalty shots
“It was a typical PAC game, it was what we expected,” says Arcadia head coach Tom Carlin. “Cabrini played great and we had to work really hard to beat them.”
The Knights, who won the regular season title, will now play Misericordia. Arcadia won 2-1 at home against Misericordia in the regular season. The two teams also met in the PAC Championship the past two years, with each team winning once. Arcadia has not lost at home since the 2000 season.
“We’re back in the same position as last year,” says Carlin. “Again we have to finish the task at hand.”

Dallas, PA - The College Misericordia men’s soccer team advanced to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championship game with a penalty kick shootout victory over Eastern University, Tuesday at Mangelsdorf Field.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute sudden death overtimes. Freshman Terrence Mull, CM’s fifth and final shooter, buried his attempt to give the Cougars a 4-3 advantage and their ninth appearance in the PAC title game in 11 years.
David Carvalho and Derek Hammacher converted on Eastern’s first two PK’s and Geoff Fritz and John Staub answered for Misericordia. CM keeper Dave Kern dived to his left to stuff Eastern’s third attempt and Frank Carrozza deflected his shot off the left post for a 3-2 lead.
Eastern’s fourth attempt was wide right and keeper Brandon Ziegler stopped the Cougars’ fourth attempt. After Manan Abdullai converted his shot to make it 4-4 and set the stage for Mull.
The Eagles had the advantage in shots, 13-8, and corners, 8-2. Kern made just three saves, including two spectacular stops in the second half to preserve the tie. He deflected Abdullai’s blast from the 18-yard line with 28:40 to play and made an incredible kick save on Chris Hammacher’s shot with just 9:30 remaining.
Misericordia, 11-4-3, will travel to top seeded Arcadia for the PAC championship, Saturday. The Knights advanced with a 2-1 semi-final shootout win over Cabrini.

2002 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship
NCAA Regional Final Monday, November 18, 2002
Arcadia (21-3) 0, Williams (16-4) 0 @ Southern CT State Arcadia advances on penalty kicks, 5-4
New Haven, CT - After 110 minutes of intense scoreless soccer left the men's soccer teams from Williams College (16-4) and Arcadia (21-3) even at 0-0, the Ephs were shown their exit from the NCAA Tournament following a 5-4 defeat in a round of penalty kicks and the Scarlet Knight advance to the Round of 8, facining the winner of Amherst/St. Lawrence at the home of the winner on Saturday or Sunday, November 23 or 24.
Ben Swan, Ylber Mezani, Tom DeGeorge, the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Justin Clark and John Barry each scored for the newly crowned Regional Champions from Arcadia, though it was goalkeeper Ralph Giangiulio (eight saves) who was the hero.
Giangiulio saved the second Williams shot, taken by Khari Stephenson, the NESCAC Player of the Year and the hero of the Ephs' 4-1 victory over Richard Stockton, and his Arcadia teammates each slid their attempts past the Eph goalkeeper, first-year Nick Armington (four saves). Scoring for the Ephs were Alex Blake, Ryan Olsen, Bryan McCoy and Dylan Smith.
The champs of the NESCAC outshot the PAC champs 24-14 on the day, and much of the credit belongs to Giangiulio for preserving the tie; indeed, Giangiulio made several fantastic saves, including one with time winding down in the overtime period following a shot from Josh Bolton. Arcadia had the edges in corners (5-4).
NCAA National Quarterfinal Sunday, November 24, 2002

Canton, NY - St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team will make its second NCAA Division III semifinal appearance in the last four years next weekend after a 2-0 quarterfinal round win over Arcadia College on Sandy MacAllaster Field Sunday afternoon.
The Saints, who won despite playing nearly 55 minutes of the game one player short, outshot the Knights 13-8 with Ezequiel Rodrigo and Mark McIntire scoring the Saint goals and Dustin Crooker recording his second shutout of the tournament and third straight victory with four saves.
The 1999 NCAA Division III champions, the 16-1-3 Saints will advance to the soccer final four at a site yet to be determined. Messiah and Otterbein advanced in quarterfinals Saturday while Trinity (Tx) and Macalaster were also playing a Sunday quarterfinal game. The semifinals will be contested on Friday, when St. Lawrence will meet Messiah, and the championship will take place on Saturday. The Saints defeated Messiah in the quarterfinals on the way to their 1999 national championship.
St. Lawrence got on the board at the 30:40 mark of the first half when Matt Kokoszka crossed the ball into the six-yard box. Jon-Michael Olmstead volleyed it out of the air and the shot deflected off an Arcadia defender. Rodrigo picked up the bounce and wasted little time in depositing it into the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Shawn Watson was shielding the ball from Ben Swan when the two became entangled. A scuffle ensued and both teams rushed to the corner where some pushing and shoving occurred. After clearing out the players, the referee issued a red card to Watson, who had a yellow earlier in the game, and gave Swan a yellow.
Down to nine field players, the Saints milked the clock by possessing the ball. St. Lawrence found an opportunity to score at the 67:54 mark. Mark McIntire carried the ball from the center of the field to the left edge of the 18-yard box. His left-footed shot went low through a screen and found the side netting just inside the far post making it a 2-0 lead.
Crooker was never really challenged making four saves in the contest. The best Knight chance came in the first half just after Watson's ejection. Swan ripped a shot from just inside the keeper's box that brushed the crossbar before going out for a goal kick.
Ralph Giangiulio made four saves for the Knights. Arcadia had six corner kicks to the Saints two while committing 16 penalties. St. Lawrence was whistled for 10 fouls.
Regional Semifinal Saturday, November 16, 2002

Keene, NH - Ben Swan's goal at the 10:47 mark of the second half was the difference as Arcadia University defeated host Keene State College, 1-0, in a NCAA New England Regional Tournament semifinal game played Saturday at Owl Stadium Complex.
Swan's game-winner came on a rebound shot. After KSC goalie D.J. Nordmark made a diving save on a shot by Tom DeGeorge, Swan jumped on the rebound and put the ball into the far corner of the net.
Although the Owls were able to keep the ball in the Arcadia side of the field throughout the second half, they were unable to muster a quality shot on net. Following the goal, the Scarlet Knights packed the zone further hampering KSC's attempt to tie the game.
The two teams played a scoreless first half. Arcadia had the best scoring opportunity early in the first half when Gary Beaver broke in from the left side and was stopped by Nordmark.
Keene State's best chance came at the 5:30 mark on a blast from Jason Lombardo at the right corner of the box.
Both teams finished the game with seven shots on goal and four corner kicks. Arcadia goalie Ralph Giangiulio had four saves to notch the shutout. Nordmark made four saves for Keene State.
Making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the past six years, Keene State concludes its season with a 13-5-3 record. Arcadia (20-3) advances to the regional championship against Williams College on Sunday at 1 p.m. Williams defeated defending Division III national champion Richard Stockton College 4-1 in the day's other semifinal contest.

Dallas, PA - Geoff Fritz scored the only goal of the game at 69:39 to lead the College Misericordia men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Penn State Altoona in the championship match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic regional championships, Sunday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Craig Seifring served the ball into the box off a re-start and Fritz headed the ball inside the right post. Dave Kern made two saves in goal for the Cougars and combined with a seven-save performance in the semi-final against Lebanon Valley, was named the Tournament MVP.
Misericordia had 13 shots and 14 corners while Penn State had 11 shots and 15 corners.
Notes: Cougars beat #8 FDU-Madison (2-0) & #4 Lebanon Valley (2-1) to reach final, while Lions have defeated #6 DeSales (4-0) & #3 Moravian (1-0). Misericordia won four of its last five games, while PSU-Altoona won six of its last eight games.
ECAC Mid-Atlantic Semifinal Saturday, November 16, 2002

The College Misericordia men's soccer team grabbed an early 2-0 lead and went on to beat Lebanon Valley, 2-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic semi-final game, Saturday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Senior sweeper Pat Sosalski scored his first goal of the season to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead at 13:42. Jason Tempesta made it 2-0 off an assist from Frank Carrozza at 21:13.
Grant Walter scored for the Dutchmen at 81:15 to make it 2-1. Lebanon Valley had a 17-11 advantage in shots, but Misericordia keeper Dave Kern made seven saves.
ECAC Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinal Wednesday, November 13, 2002

Dallas, PA - The College Misericordia men’s soccer team defeated FDU-Florham, 2-0, in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic championships.
Eric Bilger and Terrence Mull both had a goal and an assist for the Cougars and Dallas graduate Paul Shiber added an assist. Bilger gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute with assists from Mull and Shiber. Shiber played the ball to Mull who fed a through ball to Bilger on a diaganol run. He dribbled past the goalkeeper and buried a shot into an empty net.
Mull added an insurance goal in the 80th minute with an assist from Bilger.
The Cougars had a 23-11 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners. Dave Kern made four saves in goal for the Cougars.
Misericordia improved to 13-5-2 and will host Lebanon Valley in a semi-final game, Saturday at 1:00 at Mangelsdorf Field. Moravian will play Penn State Altoona in the other semi-final.
