2003 Men's Soccer Pre-Season Coaches' Poll
PAC Coaches Select Arcadia as Favorite in Men's Soccer
Aston, PA - Arcadia University men's soccer team, ranked sixth in the NSCAA Division III national poll, has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches poll. The two-time defending champion Scarlet Knights, a 2002 NCAA Final Eight squad, received four of nine first-place votes and earned 74 points in the poll to edge out Eastern University by one point.
Eastern, which finished in third place in 2002, also earned four first-place votes in the poll.
College Misericordia, the 2002 ECAC South champions, finished third in the poll with 66 points, while Cabrini College (52) earned the other first-place vote on their way to a fourth-place finish in the poll.
"We are honored to be picked as the PAC preseason favorite," Arcadia head coach Tom Carlin said. "We realize that it is mostly based on past success rather than this year's team. It will be interesting to see how our young and inexperienced team handles the pressure of playing against high-quality conference opponents."
Wesley College (44), Alvernia College (36), Gwynedd-Mercy College (28), Neumann College (23) and Marywood University (9) rounded out the voting.
The 2003 PAC Tournament will kick off with semifinal play on Wednesday, November 5, with the PAC Championship Game slated for Saturday, November 8.

2003 PAC Men's Soccer Tournament
Final- Saturday, November 8, 2003
(2) Eastern 2, at (1) Arcadia 1 (2 OT)
PAC Tournament MVP Matt Schreier's goal with 1:33 remaining in the second overtime, won the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men's soccer title for Eastern (14-3-2) over two-time defending champion Arcadia (14-5-1), 2-1. Scheier's tally won the first men's soccer title for Eastern since 1992, the first year of conference play.
After a scoreless first half with only a combined seven shots between the two squads and limited scoring chances, Eastern got on the board with 16:52 remaining in the game as Daniel Carvalho fired a shot from just outside the box through a screen that took a unexpected bounce and got past Knights netminder Ralph Giangiulio.
Leading up to the final minute of the contest, Arcadia put tremendous pressure on the Eagles goal, resulting in several close scoring opportunities, but the Knights failed to convert. However, that pressure resulted in a scramble in front of the net and a hand ball by Eastern. Arcadia's Scott Wimsey put in the penalty kick with only :20 left in regulation to force overtime.
Arcadia outshot the Eagles (14-11) and had the advantage in corners (6-4). Eastern netminder Brandon Ziegler had 5 saves, while Giangiulio had three.
Eastern is now 2-3 in PAC men's soccer finals with titles in 1992 and 2003, losses in 1993, 1997 & 1998. Arcadia is now 2-2 in PAC title games, making its fourth straight finals appearance, winning in 2001 and 2002, losing in 2000 and 2003.
Semifinal- Wednesday, November 5, 2003
at (1) Arcadia 1, (4) Misericordia 0
Matt Abate's first-half goal held up as Arcadia advanced to its fourth straight conference championship game with a 1-0 win over Misericordia on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights, the two-time defending conference champions, will host Eastern in the finals on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Abate, a freshman from Marlton, NJ , scored the game's only goal 23 minutes in. Arcadia (14-4-1 overall) threatened several times, outshooting the Cougars 9-3 but Misercordia keeper Kevin Franco, a senior from Newton, NJ stopped six shots. Ralph Giangiulio, a sophomore also from Marlton, NJ, recorded two saves for the shutout.
"It was another hard-fought PAC win," says Arcadia coach Tom Carlin. "We expected Misericordia to play hard and fight and they didn't disappoint. We expected nothing less."
Misericordia (10-6-3) has been in the PAC finals 10 out of the past 12 years. For the Knights, it is an unprecedented fourth consecutive appearance in the conference finals, but Carlin points out that nothing has been won yet.
"This is nice but we've still got one more to get," he says.
Eastern is the only PAC team to beat the Knights in the last three seasons, snapping Arcadia's 25-game conference win streak with a 2-0 win on October 15. Eastern, the number-two seed, defeated Wesley 4-0 in the other semifinal game on Wednesday.
Arcadia has represented the PAC well in the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons. In 2001, the Knights advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to Messiah, the eventual national champions, and last year made it to the Elite Eight.
at (2) Eastern 4, (3) Wesley 0
The No. 3 seeded Wesley College Wolverines fell to the No. 2 seeded Eastern University Eagles 4-0 Wednesday in men's soccer.
The Eagles took control of the match after David Carvalho netted the Eagles first goal 27 minutes into the first half. The junior midfielder rocketed a low line drive from 18 yards out to put the eventual game-winner in the back of the net. Six minutes later, Eastern struck again this time from freshman Jed Epler to put the Eagles up 2-0 at the break.
Play was even at the start of the second half with both teams continuing to battle the conditions, but 30 minutes in the the second, junior midfielder Matt Schreier slipped a no-angle shot from the left endline past Wesley keeper Ed Hunt for the third goal of the game.
The final goal was scored 25 yards out by Dan Carvalho who beat his defender and got a long shot off over the head of Wesley's Hunt.

2003 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament
First Round- Wednesday, November 12, 2003
@ Virginia Wesleyan (17-3) 3, Eastern (14-4-2) 2 (2 OT)
Steve Leahy was contemplating what to do next to try to give Virginia Wesleyan College some kind of an edge in Wednesday's tightly-contested National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament game with Eastern University.
With the score deadlocked at 2-all since the 56th minute of competition, the battle advanced in a second overtime session, and the Marlins in possession of the ball, Leahy followed a directive from teammate Caleb Hill.
"Caleb yelled at me from the sideline, "get in there," so I ran in toward the goal," said Leahy, who was moving down the right side of the field. "Once I was there I just wanted to put the ball into the goal."
And that's exactly what he did, executing a picture-perfect header that sailed through the space between the outstretched fingers of the Eastern goalie and the bottom of the crossbar. Leahy's shot, off a precise throw-in from Hill, lifted Virginia Wesleyan to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Eagles of Eastern with only 3:32 remaining to be played in the second overtime.
The Eagles recovered from a slow start to command the competition in the second half.
The Marlins, who bounded out to a 2-0 lead on goals by sophomore Matt Greene, his first of the season, and Evan Siddall.
Halftime gave Eastern the break it needed to regroup however, as the Eagles returned to the field on a mission. Sparked by Kent Metzler, Manan Abdulai, Owen Oree (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey), and Mahaish Alexander, the Eagles dominated possession of the ball and opened up the chances to creep back into contention.
Abdulai brought the Eagles the first step back with a goal off an Metzler assist in the 53rd minute, and three minutes later Shane Rineer followed a rebound off a shot and kicked it back into the net to tie the game. Overall, the Eagles outshot the Marlins 11-3 in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan did step it up, with sophomore Chris Mills and Leahy leading the way. But, Eastern stayed tough through the end of regulation, sending the teams into the overtime sessions. Overtime one was even from the start, but Virginia Wesleyan took charge from the opening kick in the second session. The Marlins kept working the ball toward the Eastern goal, waiting for a scoring opportunity to present itself. That happened on Hill's throw-in.

2003 ECAC Division Mid-Atlantic Soccer Championships
Semifinals - Saturday, November 15, 2003
@ #1 Johns Hopkins (17-3-1) 2, #5 Wesley (12-5-4) 0
Wesley's men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Johns Hopkins University Saturday in the ECAC Mid Atlantic region semi-finals. The Wolverines finish the season with a 12-5-4 record while Hopkins improves to 17-3-1 and advances to the finals on Sunday.
Hopkins' Doug Pollock opened the scoring in the 26th minute after breaking down the wing. Wesley returned with several scoring chances, including a free kick by Derek Roberts-Dukes. However, Blue Jay's keeper Gary Kane made an outstanding fingertip save to keep Wesley off the board.
Just before the break, Hopkins netted what would be the final tally to keep Wesley at bay. Wesley's attempt to clear the ball failed as Manbaj Gill fired the ball back in the net past Wolverine keeper Ed Hunt at 42:08.
Wesley applied more pressure in the second half, including a diving header by Trevor Zimmer. Hopkins defense, however, denied Wesley and held on for the semifinal victory.
The Blue Jays outshot Wesley 12-5 and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Kane finished with three saves for Hopkins while Ed Hunt registered eight saves in goal for the Wolverines.
