First Round- Saturday, October 30, 2004
@ (3) Alvernia 4, (6) Arcadia 1
Sophomore forward Megan Novogratz scored two goals and assisted on two more to lead third-seeded Alvernia College to a 4-1 win over #6 Arcadia University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey quarterfinal action at Alvernia. The Crusaders (18-2) advance to play #2 Misericordia University Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in Dallas, PA.
Alvernia tallied the first goal of the postseason just over six minutes into play when Novogratz fired a shot from the top of the circle that was finished by freshman midfielder Amber Landis. Following the Alvernia goal, Arcadia held possession for most of the remainder of the half, but could not put a shot on net.
Landis and Novogratz swapped roles for the second goal of the game. Landis injected a penalty corner right to Novogratz at the top of the circle and the sophomore wasted little time firing home her 15th goal of the season just over 10 minutes into the second half. Five minutes later sophomore Becky Macchione wove through the Scarlet Knights’ defense down the left side and fired a shot that Novogratz redirected to put Alvernia up 3-0.
The Crusaders kept up the pressure taking a 4-0 lead in the 58th minute. Sophomore Courtney Griggs lifted a pass to Novogratz and she found freshman Shayna Clark one-on-one with Arcadia goalie Lauren Leukhardt.

The Eagles out-shot the visiting Cavs, 16-4 in the first half but the scoreboard read 0-0 at the break. Cabrini answered just 12 minutes later when April Kaufmann slipped the tying goal past Eagles' goalie Joelyn Moyer.
From there the Eagles took charge as Emily Davis deposited the eventual game-winner in the 54th minute of play. 2004 ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Tournament Final Round
@ Alvernia Sunday, November 14, 2004
#8 Lebanon Valley (18-7) 3, @ #2 Alvernia (21-4) 2
Sophomore midfielder Steph Marguglio broke a 2-all tie with eight minutes left to lead eighth-seeded Lebanon Valley to a 3-2 win over #2 Alvernia College Sunday afternoon in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Championship at Alvernia. Marguglio was named the Tournament MVP.
The Crusaders (21-4), who faced a 2-goal deficit for most of second half, scored twice in a 3-minute span to tie the score at two, but Marguglio slammed home her second goal of the game and 27th for the season to claim the ECAC Title and the LVC single-season scoring record.
Marguglio opened the scoring in the ninth minute of play with an unassisted goal that followed the Dutchmen’s second penalty corner of the day. Freshman reserve Mimi Sullivan scored on LVC’s next corner in the 21st minute assisted by sophomore Mallary Anderson. The Dutchmen took their 2-0 lead into the half and held it until the 59th minute.
The Crusaders offense starter to consistently generate corners in the 44th minute, and with just over 11 minutes left to play sophomore Becky Macchione drove a shot off a corner from the left side of the circle. The ball beat LVC goalie Katie Pawlewicz, but was cleared off the line by Anderson right toward Alvernia senior Shannon Ashe who buried her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Momentum continued to swing in the Crusaders’ direction as they worked their ensuing corner for a game-tying goal. The injection was passed across the top of the circle to freshman Lauren Yoder who drove a low shot on net that Macchione redirected to tie the score at two.
The Dutchmen took a timeout to regroup with nine minutes left and pushed the ball right down field earning their ninth corner of the game. Sullivan fired a shot that Alvernia goalie Carey Douglass denied, but Marguglio was on the doorstep reclaim the edge for Lebanon Valley.
Alvernia held possession for a good portion of the final seven minutes of play and nearly tied the score again on a Melissa Senick shot, but senior back Amy Saponsky denied the shot at the goal line to preserve The Valley’s Championship.
Alvernia College finished the 2004 season with a school record 21 wins.

Semifinal Round- Saturday, November 13, 2004
@ #2 Alvernia (21-3) 2, #3 Utica (15-3) 1 (OT)
Sophomore forward Becky Macchione scored twice and junior goalie Carey Douglass made seven saves as second-seeded Alvernia College topped #3 Utica, 2-1, in overtime in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Field Hockey Semifinal Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
Utica, ranked 14th in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, shocked the largely partisan crowd with an early goal in the second minute of play. Freshman forward Danielle Fiore knocked home a pass from sophomore Carla Behe and the Pioneers (15-3) were up 1-0. UC threatened to add to the lead, but had a goal disallowed for being too high in the circle.
Alvernia broke through with Macchione’s 26th tally of the season in the 26th minute. Sophomore Megan Novogratz carried the ball down the right side and smashed a cross from just outside the circle that Macchione redirected to tie the score at 1-1.
Utica controlled the play for nearly the entire second half, and wouldn’t let the Crusaders mount any sort of offensive, but Alvernia was just as tough below the 25-yard line denying the Pioneers on every attempt. Douglass made four of her seven saves in the second half, two of them in the final three minutes, while her counterpart, Utica freshman Jeneen Yarnosh went untested for the second half.
Once the teams dropped down the 7-on-7 the field started to open up for the Crusaders who went back and forth with Utica for the first five minutes of the extra frame. Freshman back Laura Bilger carried the ball into the circle with just under 10 minutes left in the first overtime and ripped a shot off Yarnosh’s pads. Macchione was in the right place at the right time having slipped in a collision in front of the net and buried the game-winner with a sweeping shot from a near prone position.
Alvernia, making its first ECAC appearance, will host #8 Lebanon Valley College Sunday in the final with game time set for 1:00 p.m.
