Miller scores twice to Lift Eagles to Conference Final
In each of the past years, Wesley has been a team that the Eastern Field Hockey team has struggled to beat. This year, the Eagles felt they overcame that hurdle with a win in Dover earlier in the year. Playing with confidence and urgency Eastern raced to a 4-0 first half lead before winning 5-2 to advance to Saturday's final against Alvernia.
The #1 seeded Eagles got on the board early as Christy Miller put in her 16th of the year off a pass from Stephanie Moyer in the 13th minute of the game. The Eagles continued to press as they forced the action with seven first half penalty corners and made Wesley's LeAnne Hyslop make an astounding 19 first half saves. In the 18th minute of the game Senior Emily Davis, who had been out for the last four weeks with a fracture in her leg, scored an unassisted mark to further lift the home squad's spirits.
In the waning moments of the half, Miller struck again off a pass from Olivia Derr. Freshman Elya Troup put a lock on the game when she struck for an unassisted goal 62 seconds later.
The Wolverines scored twice in the opening ten minutes of the second frame, but the goals from Dani Vincent and Lauren Parkinson were not enough to overcome the Eagle first half. Lindsay Moyer countered the Wesley goals with her eighth of the year on a nice pass from her sister, Stephanie. The assist brings the junior standout's total to 12 for the year.
Eastern, who earned the top seed in the PAC playoffs with regular season road wins against the next four seeds in the tournament, will play Alvernia at home on Saturday.

Macchione Helps Crusaders Advance to Championship
READING, PA - Alvernia College senior Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) tipped home the first goal of the day in the 12th minute to spark the second-seeded Crusaders to a 3-0 win over #3 Misericordia University Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference semifinal at Alvernia.
The Crusaders (18-3), defending champions of the PAC, advanced to their third straight conference final and will play at #1 Eastern Saturday at a time to be determined. Eastern advanced with a 5-2 win over #4 Wesley College Wednesday afternoon and set up a rematch of the 2005 Championship won by Alvernia, 4-3 in overtime.
Macchione whistled a shot wide in the early going on Thursday in a scoreless game and redirected a drive from senior Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) to open the scoring in the at 11:35. The tally was Macchione's 22nd of the season and 93rd of her career moving her into 10th place by herself on the Division III career points list at 216.
Junior back Lauren Yoder (Fleetwood, PA/Oley Valley) put the Crusaders up 2-0 on a penalty stroke in the 14th minute. Alvernia junior Amber Landis (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) nearly put the Crusaders up 2-0 shortly after Macchione's goal, but CM defender Nicole Smtih (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) cleared the ball off the line. Alvernia kept up the pressure and drove in another shot that a Cougar (14-6) defender stopped with a foot setting up Yoder's stroke.
Alvernia earned six of its nine penalty corners in the opening half and held a 2-0 lead at the break. The Crusaders took nine shots in the first 35 minutes and held the Cougars without a shot.
Alvernia kept up the pressure coming out of the halftime break earning all three second half penalty corners in the first 12 minutes of the half. Misericordia cleared each of the first two, but Titus connected on the third assisted by Landis to put the hosts up 3-0.
CM took a timeout following the Titus goal and started to build pressure with its first shot of the day which Alvernia starter Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) easily turned away. Alvernia finished the day with a 15-1 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corners. Misericordia senior Jamie Derr (McEwesville, PA/Warrior Run) played 56 minutes and made nine saves. Hoffman finished the day with just one save.

Miller scores twice as Eagles win PAC Championship
In the beginning of the year, the Coaches in the PAC select the team that they think will win in the preseason poll. Despite the fact that the Eagles lost in overtime in the PAC Championship in 2005, the Coaches picked the Eastern to finish a distant fifth. After winning regular season road games against four of the five other teams in the PAC playoffs, the Eagles played an almost flawless match against preseason favorite Alvernia to secure the PAC Championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Both teams generated chances in the opening frame, and it looked as though the Eagles had jumped to the lead just over halfway through the first half when Stephanie Moyer cleaned up a rebound and fired a low hard shot from fifteen yards out that hit the back of the cage with a resounding thud. After further review and lengthy discussions, the officials deemed that the shot preceding Moyer's was too high and the goal was disallowed. Alvernia's Audrey Hoffman made nine first half saves to keep the Eagles at bay.
The Eastern back line, led by Ellen Hivner and Lesley Messick, turned away the Alvernia attack time and time again, and the Eagles were able to secure nine penalty corners to the Crusader's two. In a game within the game, Eastern junior Carrie Kline had the job of shadowing the high scoring Megan Novogratz throughout the match. Novogratz released five shots for the game, but was forced into tough angles and was unable to find the back of the cage.
The second half saw Alvernia pick up the pressure with a 9-4 advantage in corners, but the Eagles used the space behind the Crusaders to generate their first goal of the match. Senior forward and game MVP Christy Miller generated the first goal of the match by sheer force of will. In the 55th minute of the game, she picked up a ball on the left sideline and faced up her defender. She touched the ball to one side and ran around to the other side. After fighting off the defender's attempt to slow her, Miller worked the ball down the baseline to just over five yards out. After taking a quick touch infield to improve her angle, she fired a low ball that hit just inside the far post for her 17th tally of the year.
Up 1-0, the Eagles continued to press forward. The Eastern midfield continued to win possession and keep the ball in the Crusader end. In the 59th minute, Eastern earned their fourth and final penalty corner of the second half. June Antes fired a pass to Stephanie Moyer who snapped a hard ball into the crease. Miller received it and in one motion turned and cracked a shot just inside the right upright for the game clincher.
The Crusaders continued to press, but Kelly Garland and the Eastern defense were up to the task of defending the lead. Garland made four of her eight saves late and got help on a defensive save from Antes to secure the shutout and the 2006 PAC Championship.
In the preseason poll, one PAC coach picked the Eagles to win it all. Truth be told, that one coach was Eastern coach Camrin Azzarano, who from the start of the season saw something in her team that led her to believe that they would win. Stephanie Moyer said of the championship, "We've waited for this. We've worked for this.. This is amazing. " The Eagles await word from the NCAA to find out the location and time of their next game.

2006 NCAA Women's Field Hockey Championship
Wednesday, November 8, 2006- First Round
William Smith (16-3) 4, Eastern University (17-4) 1
In walking onto William Smith College's McCooey Field for an NCAA tournament game, the Eastern University Field Hockey team had already exceeded expectations on the year. The Eagles took time to acclimate to the tight turf surface, and in that time, the host Herons jumped to a 4-0 advantage and ultimately a 4-1 win.
The Eagles, who earned seven penalty corners on the match, started the day with two almost immediately. Two saves from the Heron's Katie DeKraker kept the Eagles off the board. William Smith's senior captain Liz Saucier broke the scoreless tie with her seventh goal in the ninth minute.
After a Kelly Garland knocked away a shot from Smith's senior standout Sophie Dennis, Smith's Ashley Barker knocked home her first of two first half goals. Just seconds after Barker scored, Smith's Kaitlyn Hamilton tucked away a pass from Barker. The Eagles then picked up speed and generated shots at the Heron net, but once again were able to beat DeKraker.
In the 24th minute Barker tipped a Dennis shot around Garland for her thirteenth goal of the season. Down 4-0 at the break, Eastern continued to adapt to the lightening-fast surface, and played the hosts level in the second frame. The Herons forced Garland to make four second half saves, and Ellen Hivner made a nice defensive save behind her, but the Eagles generated several quality chances to try to earn one back.
Eastern's efforts were finally rewarded in the 65th minute after Christy Miller collected a ball at the top of the circle and was able to push one just inside the post for her 20th goal of the year. The Eagles finish the year at 17-5. Coach Azzarano commented after the game on how proud she was of the way her team battled in the second half, and how that spirit is reflective of the character of her team. The Herons advance to play Middlebury College on Saturday.

Junior forward Ashley Traylor (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge), the Captains' leading scorer set up classmate Ashley Hay (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) who opened the scoring just over six minutes into play. The Captains moved the ball from the top of the circle down to the left side and Hay finished her second goal of the season.
Alvernia nearly tied the score shortly after the restart earning two of its eight first-half penalty corners. Senior forward Becky
Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) ripped a shot on the first corner that CNU freshman Ashley Whipple (Hampton, VA/Kecoughtan) turned aside. Whipple saved the initial shot on the next corner, and Alvernia corralled the rebound but the follow-up shot caromed off the near post leaving the hosts up 1-0.
CNU countered off the second corner, but Alvernia starter Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) turned the Captains aside. The hosts continued to press and Traylor earned possession in the circle and got off a shot that Hoffman sprawled to save. The sophomore keeper swatted the ball out of the goal mouth, but Traylor collected the ball
with her back to the cage and flicked a shot over Hoffman into the netting for a 2-0 advantage.
The Crusaders took a timeout and once again came back with pressure earning a penalty corner. The ball came across the top of the circle and a CNU defender turned it into a quick counterattack. Alvernia had a chance to turn the charge aside as it crossed midfield, but the surge continued down the right side and into the top of the circle. Hoffman charged off her line to thwart the effort, but Traylor got to the ball first and slid home her 20th goal of the season.
Christopher Newport earned its first of two first-half corners following the restart, but Alvernia quickly countered and senior forward Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) unleashed four of her game-high nine shots over the next two minutes, but three sailed wide and Whipple stopped the fourth.
Neither team mounted a serious offensive threat over the next seven minutes, but once the first half clock dropped under five minutes the Crusader offense once again put pressure on the CNU keeper. Novogratz whistled another shot wide and Whipple saved a pair. Junior back Lauren Yoder (Leesport, PA/Oley Valley) earned a shot following another corner and after a pair of Whipple saves freshman Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights) gathered the ball in a crowd and pushed a shot into the cage to put the Crusaders on the board with under two minutes left in the first half.
CNU came out firing to start the second half. Alvernia reserve Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) made a sliding save early in the frame, and CNU sophomore Haylie Black (Newport News, VA/Menchville) pushed a shot wide of the open net. The Captains kept up the heat and Yocum was again forced off her line to challenge a shot near the top of
the circle. The offensive player flicked the ball past Yocum to her right, but the sliding goalie took her out and the Captains were awarded a penalty stroke. Sophomore back Courtney Russ (Hampton, VA/Kehoughtan) converted the stoke to put the hosts up 4-1 with 29:51 left.
CNU continued to keep the pressure up and Diana Golden (Hampton, VA/Kehoughtan) notched her 10th goal of the season assisted by Ashley Cybulski (Oakton, VA/James Madison) in the 46th minute.
Alvernia managed three more shots over the final 24 minutes of play, but couldn't close the gap on the Captains. Alvernia finished the day with a 16-15 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in corners. Hoffman was credited with a pair of saves with Yocum getting one. Whipple made 10 stops for the hosts.
Alvernia was making its second straight NCAA appearance. The Crusaders advanced to the second round last season before falling to eventual national runner-up Messiah College.
