2003 PAC Women's Soccer Tournament
Final- Saturday, November 8, 2003
(4) Cabrini 1, at (2) Gwynedd-Mercy 1 Cabrini wins on penalty kicks (3-2)
Mary Remoli scored a goal in regulation, and a second in penalty kicks, and goalkeeper Melissa Williams made six saves to lead Cabrini College (12-6-4) over Gwynedd-Mercy College (12-3-5) in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) women's soccer Championship Game on Saturday. The title is the third for the Lady Cavaliers in the PAC's 11-year history, and their first since 1995. With the win, Cabrini receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Cabrini prevailed in penalty kicks, 3-2, after the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of play. Christine Watson and Remoli converted the Lady Cavs first two kicks in the tie-breaker, while Williams made saves on Gwynedd's Amanda Lipira and Chris Perry.
Gwynedd-Mercy's Erin Halladay then stopped Cabrini's Christine Jennings and Kelli Romano on the Lady Cavs next two attempts, while the Griffins Kristen Book and Cindy Hansen both found the back of the net to tie the penalty kick round at 2-2.
Nicole Neidermeier scored the deciding goal for Cabrini, beating Halladay low to the right side of the net. With the game on the line, Gwynedd's MaiVi DeJoseph sailed her shot high and wide.
The two teams each scored in the first half of the contest, with Remoli, who broke the Lady Cavs' single-season scoring mark this season, scoring 10 minutes into the contest off a feed from Watson to give Cabrini an early advantage.
Gwynedd tied the score in the 32nd minute on an 18-yard blast from Megan Wood. Wood's goal was assisted by Perry and Dana Landis.
Cabrini carried the action through the second half, outshooting Gwynedd-Mercy 7-0 in the stanza. The Lady Cavs' best chance came with less than two minutes to play, when Romano hit the crossbar from a wide angle.
After a sluggish first overtime, the two teams went back-and-forth throughout the second extra session. Gwynedd outshot Cabrini 3-2 in the final 10 minutes, with their best chance coming in the final 15 seconds, when freshman Laura Mautz's shot sailed over an open net.
For the game, Cabrini outshot Gwynedd-Mercy 13-8 and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Williams made four saves in regulation, and two more on penalty kicks and was named the MVP of the PAC Tournament. The goal she allowed in the first half was her only goal against in Cabrini's three post-season victories.
Halladay made six saves during the game and two more on penalty kicks.

Semifinal- Tuesday, November 4, 2003
(4) Cabrini 1, at (1) Eastern 0
Christine Watson scored on a penalty kick four minutes into the second half, and Melissa Williams made three saves as Cabrini College(12-6-3) defeated Eastern University (14-4-2), 1-0, in a PAC Semifinal on Tuesday. The win was Cabrini's first over Eastern since 2000, and their first playoff victory since 1998.
The fourth-seeded Lady Cavaliers advance to the PAC Championship Game on Saturday at Gwynedd-Mercy College at 1 p.m.
After Williams made a save on a shot by Eastern early in the second half, her wind-aided punt bounced once on Eastern's half of the field and was controlled by Watson, who carried the ball into the box and was tripped from behind. Her penalty kick found the right corner of the net to give Cabrini the lead.
Eastern, the top seed in the PAC Tournament, threatened a few times in the final 40 minutes, but Cabrini's defense kept them off the scoreboard.
Eastern outshot Cabrini 8-4 on the day. Eastern's Alison LeCesse made two saves on the day.
Cabrini will be playing in its fifth PAC Championship Game and first since 1998. The Lady Cavs won the PAC Championship in 1994 and 1995.
at (2) Gwynedd-Mercy 1, (3) Misericordia 0
Freshman Dana Landis netted the game winner with 31:08 remaining to play in the second half on assists from freshmen Lauren Capotrio and Amanda Lipira. The defensive unit of the Griffins did the rest of the work in the game, as they did not allow the Cougars a strong scoring chance the entire 90 minutes of play.
The defensive minded Griffins took control of the game early and played very well in the first half while Misericordia took back some momentum late in half one. After Landis' goal put the Griffins ahead 1-0, Misericordia threw caution to the wind and many times had 10 players in the offensive zone trying to suffocate the Gwynedd-Mercy squad. But, the poised play of senior defenders Cindy Hansen and Liz O'Donnell along with junior Grace Scully and unflappable freshman Laura Mautz and Lauren Capotrio made the final 30 minutes frustrating for the Cougars.
The offensive pressure from Miki Bedics, Jen Rebelo and the rest of the Cougars made the final 10 minutes of the game very exciting as Misericordia out shot the Griffins 7 to 1 in the second half. But, the one Griffins shot was the game winner before turning the game over to the defense for the final 30 minutes of play and coming away with the 1-0 victory.
The Griffins will play host to Cabrini College on Saturday, November 8, at 1:00pm in the PAC Championship. Cabrini, the #4 seed, upset the #1 seeded Eastern University, 1-0, at Eastern.

First Round- Saturday, November 1, 2003

Raye Stewart got the Cougars on the board with a goal off of assists from Miki Bedics and Carolyn Muller at the 9:15 mark.
Amanda Gates scored the second goal off of another Muller assist with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half to give CM a 2-0 lead at the half.
Raye Stewart scored her second goal of the game off of a Bedics assist at the 86:16 mark to lock up a 3-0 Cougars victory.
Kathleen Schwarz had four saves in goal to earn the shuthout.
CM improves to 11-5-2 and advances to the PAC Semi-finals. The Cougars will travel to the #2 seed Gwynedd-Mercy, Tuesday for a 1:00 game.

at (4) Cabrini 4, (5) Arcadia 0
Mary Remoli scored a pair of goals, and Melissa Williams made four saves to lead Cabrini College to a 4-0 win over Arcadia University in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women's soccer first-round game on Saturday.
Remoli scored the only goal of the first half in the game's 28th minute. Christine Jennings played the ball down the wing to Christine Watson, whose centering pass found Remoli at the top of the box. Remoli fired a shot into the corner of the net to give the Lady Cavs the edge.
Williams made three first-half saves to keep the Lady Cavs ahead at the half.
Remoli started a three-goal second half for the Lady Cavs, scoring on a free kick from 35 yards away with 32:33 remaining in the contest.
Cabrini's Colleen Feeney extended the lead to three goals two minutes later, and Christine Kedra set the final score with 23:08 remaining in the game.
Katie Rockwell made four saves for Arcadia, which finishes the season 8-9-2.
Cabrini (11-6-3), seeded fourth in the PAC Tournament, advances to the semifinals on TuesdayBack to Top
2003 NCAA Division III Tournament
First Round- Wednesday, November 12, 2003
@ Mary Washington (11-5-5) 2, Cabrini (12-7-4) 1
Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Williams made 11 saves, but it was not enough, as Cabrini fell to Mary Washington College, 2-1, in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament in Frederickburg, Virginia.
The Lady Cavs finish the season with a record of 12-7-4, while Mary Washington advances to play Messiah College on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Grantham, Pennsylvania.
Mary Washington got on the board in the 26th minute, as sophomore Jacqui Forsythe took a through ball from Kathryn Amirpashaie and scored with a right-footed blast inside the goal box. The Eagles kept the lead through the first half, despite being outshot by Cabrini, 5-4.
Mary Washington doubled its advantage 25 seconds into the second half, as freshman Jaclyn Gebbia took a cross from Hannah Slotnick and drilled the ball into the open net.
Although the Eagles dominated play throughout the half, outshooting Cabrini 20-5, Williams made a number of outstanding saves to keep the LadyCavs in the game.
Cabrini got on the board with a little more than five minutes to go in the game, as freshman Carly Ober converted a rebound of Mary Remoli's shot, which had hit the crossbar, to draw the Lady Cavs within one. However, they were unable to mount much offense in the game's final minutes.
Mary Elizabeth Fulco made five saves for Mary Washington (11-5-5) to earn the victory.

2003 ECAC Mid-Atlantic Division III Championship
Semifinals - Saturday, November 15 (Carnegie Mellon)
@ #1 Carnegie Mellon (11-2-4) 2, #4 Gwynedd-Mercy (13-4-5) 0
The Carnegie Mellon University and Moravian (Pa.) College women's soccer teams posted shutout victories Saturday in the semifinals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament, being held at Carnegie Mellon.
Top-seeded Carnegie Mellon recorded a 2-0 victory over the fourth-seed, Gwynedd-Mercy College in the nightcap. In the first game, the sixth-seed Moravian posted a 1-0 triumph over second-seeded Lebanon Valley College. The two teams will meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the championship.
The second game saw the Tartans (11-2-4) score a goal in the 19th minute to take the lead. Sophomore forward Hallie Dumont found the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Richter and senior defender Kelly Bloomquist registered assists on the score.
In the second half, Carnegie Mellon dominated the action, holding a 10-1 advantage in shots on their way to a 16-3 margin for the game. The Griffins stood up to the pressure until sophomore defender Margaret Beck scored off an assist from sophomore Kristen Bevilaqua-Linn in the 82nd minute to put the game away and send the Tartans into the title game.
Carnegie Mellon junior keeper Megan Monroe made just one save in the game but it came on a breakaway in the first half that could have tied the game for Gwynedd-Mercy. The Griffins had two keepers play, as Maria Neville made five saves and Erin Halliday stopped one shot.

First Round- Wednesday, November 12, 2003
@ #4 Gwynedd-Mercy (13-3-5) 4, #5 Catholic (14-5-1) 0
On a soggy track, the Griffins offense could not be slowed once it got on track. Dana Landis started the scoring with her first of two goals, 25:30 into the game, on an unassisted goal after a Gwynedd-Mercy corner.
In the second half, the Griffins got right to business with a goal by Megan Wood assisted by Dana Landis and Kristen Pennypacker only 6:40 in. Shortly afterwards, Christine Perry came knocking and banged home a goal eight minutes later after Dana Landis served the ball from the left side to center and Perry hammered it between the sticks. Finally, Landis notched her fifth and sixth point of the game with a break away goal assisted by Pennypacker and Wood which iced the 4-0 win for Gwynedd-Mercy.
Maria Neville was hardly tested in net and came away with one save while facing six shots in the game. Once again, it was the defensive unit of the Griffins that would not allow the Cardinals to get anything going. The tough play of senior captains Cindy Hansen and Liz O'Donnell along with freshman Laura Mautz and junior Grace Scully controlled the game early and secured the win for the Griffins who will travel to Carnegie Mellon University for the semi-final game on Saturday.
