SMITH NAMED WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH AT MARYWOOD
Returns to post he held from 1998-2002
Scranton, PA - Marywood University Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Mary Jo Gunning has appointed Andrew Smith as Head Women's Soccer Coach following the resignation of Julie Heincelman, who held the post for two seasons.
"It was imperative that we name someone to the position as soon as possible for recruiting purposes" Dr. Gunning stated. "Thankfully, we did not have to look far for a very qualified candidate with a proven record of success."
Smith, who is currently the University's Director of Sports Information and Athletic Promotions, is no stranger to the women's soccer post. Smith was the program's first ever head coach and started the program from scratch in 1998. From 1998-2002, he compiled a 43-44-2 record and led the program to a PAC playoff berth in 2001. During his last two years his teams went 27-11-1.
In his first stint as Head Coach of the women's program, Smith produced a PAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 1999 (Lindsay Pappas) and a PAC Player of the Year in 2002 (Rebecca Grubb). His teams earned numerous distinctions on and off the field, as they consistently ranked as one of the top offenses in the country and earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2002.
"I am delighted to be back coaching the women's soccer program" Smith said. "The immediate goal will be to recruit and bring the program back to the previous level of success." With a solid core of returning players in 2005, Smith believes an immediate turn-around is not out of the question. "While it will take a lot of recruiting to solidify the line-up, the experience and talent of several returnees leaves me with nothing but optimism for the upcoming year" he said.
Smith, a graduate of King's College, holds a USSF "B" license and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

PAC Coaches Select Eastern as Favorite in Women's Soccer
Aston, PA - Eastern University's women's soccer team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches poll. The Eagles received five of 11 first-place votes and earned a total of 113 points in the poll to barely edge Misericordia University, which earned four first-place votes and 112 points.
Gwynedd-Mercy College, which lost in last year's PAC Championship Game, earned the other two first-place votes. The Griffins were selected to finish third in the poll, earning 97 points.
Cabrini College, the defending champion, finished fourth in the poll, earning 92 points.
"To have the PAC coaches select us as pre-season favorites speaks well of our returning players, but I anticipate that the top teams in the league will compete in such a way that there will be several teams to beat in the league," Eastern head coach Dan Mouw said. "With this honor comes a raised level of expectation that we welcome as we try to win our first PAC championship."
Arcadia University was selected to finish fifth, with 75 points. Wesley College (63), Alvernia College (59), Neumann College (45), Marywood University (33), Cedar Crest College (23), and Immaculata University (14) rounded out the voting.
