Cairn the top pick in CSAC MBB Preseason Coaches' Poll

CAiRN THE TOP PICK IN CSAC MBB PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

ROSEMONT, Pa. – Cairn University was the top pick of the coaches in the 2019-2020 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) men’s basketball preseason coaches’ poll.

The Highlanders, who advanced to the CSAC title game last year before losing to Rosemont, received 61 points and six first-place votes. Centenary University was second with 48 points and two first-place votes.

Wilson College was third with 42 points, followed by defending champion Rosemont in fourth with 41 points.

The College of Saint Elizabeth, who joined the CSAC as a core member this year, was fifth with 35 points.

Keystone College was sixth with 33 points, followed by Bryn Athyn College in seventh at 15 points and Clarks Summit University in eighth with 13 points.

The regular season begins on Saturday, November 9, with six of the eight conference teams in action. Bryn Athyn will play an exhibition game against Division I Towson University on Friday, November 8.

CSAC play begins on Saturday, November 30, with Cairn taking on Keystone and Bryn Athyn traveling to Clarks Summit.

The CSAC playoffs, which feature the top four teams, start with the semifinals on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 with the championship set for Saturday, February 29, 2020.

Tucker helped guide the Eagles to a 3-0 start on the season by shooting 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the field, and averaging 13.3 points per game. He was 5-for-6 from the field in the win over FDU-Florham, with 16 points.

Jason Saldiveri / Sr / Saint Elizabeth University / New Brunswick, N.J. / (Defensive)
Saldiveri averaged just under four steals and 3.3 defensive rebounds a game for the Eagles in a 3-0 week. 

November 25, 2019
Tone Cockrell / Jr / Keystone College / Upper Marlboro, Md. / Landon School (Offensive)
Cockrell averaged 30.5 points per game and seven rebounds a contest in a 1-1 week for the Giants. Against Lehman, he scored 32 points, then followed that up with a 29 point performance in a win over York (NY). He shot 18-for-34 over the two games, including a 5-for-7 three point mark in the win over York (NY).

Collazo averaged 6.7 defensive rebounds a game and finished with an average of eight caroms a game for the Highlanders. He pulled ten defensive rebounds in the win over PS-Berks. 

December 2, 2019
Jeremiah Harris / Sr / Cairn University /  / (Offensive)
Harris averaged an incredible 34.5 points per game in the Highlanders two wins last week. The senior carried the Highlanders in both wins, shooting an incredible 63.4 percent from the field for the week. Against Lancaster Bible, Harris notched his career high and 7th highest point total in Cairn history with a 40-point effort. In the Highlanders first CSAC win, Harris followed up with 29 points and five assists, pacing Cairn down the stretch and buoying their offense.

Collazo had a great week for the Highlanders, as he averaged 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in a 2-0 week for Cairn. Against Keystone, he had 11 total rebounds with six of them being defensive while grabbing three steals.

December 9, 2019
Jeremy Jordan / Jr / Keystone College / Portsmouth, Va. / I.C. Norcom (Offensive)
Jordan averaged 27 points per game in a 2-0 week of Keystone, shooting 70.3 percent from the field (19-for-27) and 76.9 percent from the three point line (10-for-13). He scored 29 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the three point line in the win over Bryn Athyn.

Clark had 15 rebounds in the win over Rosemont, then added 13 rebounds in the loss to Neumann.

Billy Veras / So / Centenary University / Fort Lee, N.J. / Fort Lee HS (Offensive)
Veras led a balanced attack as the Cyclones beat John Jay for their second straight victory. The sophomore forward poured a team-high 16 points as he shot 50% from the field (7-for-14) and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. Veras added nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. It was the seventh straight game that he has scored in double figures.

January 6, 2020
Chris LaBelle / Jr / Centenary University / Hamilton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic Academy (Offensive)
LaBelle averaged 27 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while leading the Cyclones to a 3-1 mark over the winter break. The junior scored a career-high 36 points, 28 of which came in the second half in the comeback win over Delaware Valley. LaBelle scored at least 22 points in all four games over break. He shot 55.7 percent from the field and was an impressive 34-for-41 (82.9%) from the foul line in that stretch.

D'Angelo Blackmond / FY / Centenary University / Orange, N.J. / Orange HS (Defensive)
Blackmond averaged eight rebounds and 12.3 points per game while leading the Cyclones to a 3-1 mark over the winter break. Blackmond posted double digit rebounds in two of the four games, including a season-high 15 boards against Brooklyn. He had at least one block in three of the four games and recorded at least one steal in three of the four contests.

Chris LaBelle / Jr / Centenary University / Hamilton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic Academy (Offensive)
LaBelle, who won the award for the second straight week, averaged 35.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game while leading the Cyclones to three wins and keeping Centenary unbeaten in conference play. The junior guard set three school single-game records and recorded a double-double and a triple-double last week. He shot 50 percent from the field and 80.8 percent from the free throw line.

January 20, 2020

Forker averaged 18 points on the week, including a 19-point performance a gritty road win over Wilson on Sunday. Against the Phoenix, Forker scored 16 of Cairn’s 31 points during a 31-16 run over the final 8:54 to give the Highlanders the win. He shot 11-for-15 during the week, including a 6-for-8 performance in the win over the Phoenix.

Weiler helped the Cyclones stretch their win streak to four straight games with a dominating performance on the boards in their only game of the week. He grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, 12 of which came on the defensive glass in the win over Bryn Athyn. Weiler also matched his career-high with four steals in the win. In addition, he added 13 points in the contest for his second career double-double and three assists.

Burr, in one game last week, had 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field in a win over Clarks Summit. He also went 5-for-7 from the three-point line, while grabbing three steals and dishing out four assists.

Hall averaged ten rebounds on the week, while blocking three shots and having four steals. Against Keystone, he had eight defensive rebounds and two blocks.

February 3, 2020
Billy Veras / So / Centenary University / Fort Lee, N.J. / Fort Lee HS (Offensive)
Veras did a little bit of everything to lead the Cyclones to a 2-0 week as Centenary maintained its perch atop the CSAC standings. The sophomore forward averaged 20 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Veras shot an impressive 68 percent (17-for-25) from the field for the week. The sophomore forward had a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds in the road win at Saint Elizabeth. Veras then helped the Cyclones avenge their only loss in conference play with a win at home over Rosemont. The sophomore knocked down 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and matched his career-high with five assists.

D'Angelo Blackmond / FY / Centenary University / Orange, N.J. / Orange HS (Defensive)
Blackmond dominated the boards to lead the Cyclones to two wins and kept the team atop the CSAC standings. He averaged 11.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game while also adding 12.5 points per game. The freshman started his week with nine boards in the road win at Saint Elizabeth. He also added 15 points and two rebounds in that game. On Saturday, Blackmond helped the Cyclones avenge their only CSAC loss of the season with a home win against Rosemont. Blackmond pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds as the Cyclones dominated the rebounding battle, 52-33. He added 10 points in that game as well. Blackmond leads the CSAC while averaging 8.8 rebounds per game.

Hall was 7-for-11 from the field for 20 points and added in ten rebounds in Cairn’s win over Saint Elizabeth. He also had a steal and two assists.

Kiaeem Comegys / So / Bryn Athyn College / Philadelphia, Pa. / Parkland (Defensive)
Comegys had five blocked shots and two steals in the Lions’ win over Saint Elizabeth.

February 17, 2020
Chris LaBelle / Jr / Centenary University / Hamilton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic Academy (Offensive)LaBelle did a little bit of everything and broke a CSAC record while leading the Cyclones to three wins and the top seed in the CSAC this week. The junior guard averaged 20 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game last week. In Monday's win over Saint Elizabeth, LaBelle contributed 22 points and eight assists. He was 10-for-13 from the foul line in that game and late in the second half broke the CSAC record for single-season free throws when he hit his 169th free throw of the season. In Wednesday's win at Keystone, LaBelle recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He also added seven assists and helped the Cyclones force two key turnovers in the final seconds of a close game. LaBelle then scored 19 of his game-high 21 points to lead the Cyclones to the come from behind win over Cairn. LaBelle's 60 points this week allowed him to become the third player in program history to score at least 500 points in a single-season at Centenary. The win over Carin allowed the Cyclones to tie the 1996 team for the most wins in single-season history (17) and extend the win streak to seven games, which is the longest in program history. 

Tom Weiler / Gr. / Centenary University / Old Bridge, N.J. / Bishop George Ahr (Defensive)
Weiler dominated the boards while leading the Cyclones to three wins and the top seed in the CSAC Tournament. Weiler averaged 11 rebounds per game and added 21 points and 3.3 assists per game. In Monday's win over Saint Elizabeth, Weiler contributed 13 rebounds, all of which came on the defensive end. He also scored a career-high 26 points in that game and added three assists. In Wednesday's road victory at Keystone, Weiler posted 11 rebounds, all of which came on the defensive end and added 20 points for his second straight double-double and third of the season. In Saturday's come from behind win, Weiler had nine rebounds, 17 points and four assists. The win over Cairn allowed the Cyclones to tie the 1996 team for the most wins in single-season history (17) and win their seventh straight game which is the longest win streak in program history.

Taylor scored a career-high 34 points, on 11-for-21 shooting, in a win over top-seed Centenary University on Wednesday night. He connected on 7-of-13 three pointers in the win.

Cockrell had eight defensive rebounds and a steal for the Giants in a win over Saint Elizabeth on Saturday.
