The PAC adds Shenandoah University & Villa Julie College in Men’s Lacrosse
Aston, PA – The Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) is proud to announce the additions of Shenandoah University (Winchester, VA) and Villa Julie College (Stevenson, MD) as associate members in the sport of men’s lacrosse, starting in the spring of 2002. With these two additions, the PAC will consist of seven members in the sport of men’s lacrosse; Cabrini College (Radnor, PA), Eastern University (St. Davids, PA), College Misericordia (Dallas, PA), Neumann College (Aston, PA), Shenandoah University, Villa Julie College and Wesley College (Dover, DE). Alvernia College (Reading, PA) currently competes as a club program, but is expected to reach varsity status in the near future.

”With the addition of Shenandoah University and Villa Julie College as associate members in the sport of men’s lacrosse, both programs add significantly to our profile,” said Tom Bonerbo, PAC Commissioner. “With seven members for the spring 2002 season, the PAC now has the requisite numbers to apply for the automatic qualifier in this sport. If granted the “AQ” in men’s lacrosse, the PAC will offer a postseason opportunity in every eligible team sport we offer. By taking this step, the PAC continues its commitment to all of our student-athletes.”

Shenandoah University is a member of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (DIAC) in all sports, but men’s lacrosse. The DIAC does not offer men’s lacrosse as a championship sport. Shenandoah and Greensboro are the only two DIAC members to offer a men’s lacrosse program. Playing as an independent since it inception as a program in 1993, Shenandoah has been playing PAC schools for the last several years. The Hornets were 3-10 in 2001 under fourth-year head coach Brian (BJ) Jenkins. Jenkins record at Shenandoah is 16-39 overall.

"We are very happy to be accepted into the PAC," SU Athletic Director Dave Dutton said. "This gives our men's lacrosse program the same situation the rest of our teams have: a conference to play in and a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. I have no doubt that the being accepted into the PAC is going to help out the men's lacrosse team immensely."

Villa Julie College has been an independent in all sports, since its first year as a NCAA Division III member in 1994. The Mustangs come into the PAC after a stellar 2001 season, finishing 10-3 and being ranked as high as 25th in the country. Villa Julie’s three loses were to three nationally ranked programs; #8 Hampden-Sydney, #12 Western Maryland and #20 Roanoke. The Mustangs are coached by Lacrosse Hall of Fame member (inducted in 1992) Skeet Chadwick. In two seasons, Chadwick is 18-10. Villa Julie returns 15 players for the 2002 season.

”The acceptance in the PAC for men’s lacrosse is the first conference affiliation for any of our sports here at VJC, and the PAC is a great fit,” states Villa Julie College Athletic Director Brett Adams. ”The organization is very well run and the opportunity for our lacrosse team to be associated with the conference is great for the school. There is something special about playing for a conference championship, and we’re excited that our athletes now have this opportunity.”

The other non-men’s lacrosse playing members of the conference are Arcadia University (Glenside, PA), Cedar Crest College (Allentown, PA), Gwynedd-Mercy College (Gwynedd Valley, PA), Immaculata College (Immaculata, PA), Marywood University (Scranton, PA) and Rosemont College (Rosemont, PA).
