Twelve-time defending conference champion Cabrini College has been selected first in the 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse preseason coaches’ poll. The Cavaliers received all seven first-place votes, and 49 points total, with Gwynedd-Mercy College slotted second (37 points) and Centenary College third (33).
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the CSAC,” said Cabrini head coach
Steve Colfer, the 2012 CSAC Coach of the Year. “Our student-athletes have been working hard on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom, preparing for the 2013 season. We are excited about starting a new season, and look forward to all that it brings.”
Marywood University was voted fourth, with 30 points, followed by Neumann University (23), Immaculata University (17), and Rosemont College (7).
The Cavaliers finished 17-3 in 2012, and enter the new campaign ranked sixth in the
Inside Lacrosse Top 30 preseason poll. In 2012, Cabrini reached the third round of the NCAA National Tournament, before falling to eventual national champion Salisbury University. Five Cavaliers received Preseason All-America honors by
Inside Lacrosse, including first teamer
Bobby Thorp, who led the conference in every major offensive category last season, including points (89), goals (52) and assists (37). The Cavaliers also led the nation in scoring defense last season, allowing an average of just 4.9 goals per game, and will look to be anchored by senior defenseman
Andrew Kvech and senior goalie
Erick Zarzecki, the 2012 CSAC Player of the Year. Kvech snared 56 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers as a junior, while Zarzecki led the nation with a 4.90 goals-against-average and posted a save percentage of .624, good for 13th nationally.
Gwynedd-Mercy, under coach
Dana Lindstrom, went 10-6 last season (5-2 CSAC), reaching the championship game of the CSAC tournament. Senior
Roy Bakeoven and sophomore
Nathan Pendleton will look to lead the offense in the new year. Last season, Bakeoven posted 40 points, on 26 goals and 14 assists, while Pendleton finished with 33 goals, good for fourth in the conference. Sophomore defenseman
Zachary Goodman returns after grabbing a team-best 61 ground balls and causing 23 turnovers a season ago, while goalie
Ryley O’Keefe is also back, after posting a goals-against average of 7.50 and a save percentage of .563 in 2012.
Centenary, under coach
Matt Klank, went 6-9 (4-3 CSAC) last season, and returns its top six scorers in 2013, led by the senior duo of
Cameron Gunn and
Conor Nolan. Last season, Gunn posted 70 points, on 38 goals and 32 assists. His per-game average of 4.67 points was best in the league, while his 2.53 goals per game placed second. Nolan finished with 59 points, with 26 goals and 33 assists, and his average of 2.20 helpers per game ranked first in the CSAC.
Sean Lowe and
Patrick Johnson look to lead the Centenary defense, as the former posted 39 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers, and the latter 67 and 31.
The first conference games of 2013 are slated to take place on March 23, with each team’s six-game CSAC schedule wrapping up on April 25. The semifinals of the four-team CSAC championship tournament are scheduled for April 30, with the CSAC title game taking place on May 4.
