Alvernia Community Mourns The Loss Of Jeff Rentschler
Sophomore Golfer Was The Passenger In A One-Car Accident
Reading, PA – A large group of students, faculty, and staff from the Alvernia College community was present at a funeral service for sophomore golfer Jeff Rentschler (Womelsdorf, PA/Tulpehocken) Thursday morning at the Reading Moravian Church. Rentschler was the passenger in a car driven by his younger cousin last Friday afternoon, April 8, that spun out of control on a country road in Jefferson Township, Berks County near both of their homes. Both young men were killed instantly when the car hit a tree.
Rentschler was a two-year member of the golf team and a History/Education major. He most often played in the No. 3 position for the Crusaders, and he established a career-low with a round of 79 at the Penn State Blue Course this past fall in an Eastern College Athletic Conference regional qualifier.
Thursday’s service drew a standing room only crowd in the Rentschlers’ home church as family and friends gathered for support and an opportunity to share memories.
The Alvernia College golf team will continue its season on Monday, April 18 at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.

Foran Named Golf Coach at CM
Dallas, Pa. – Tim Foran of Dallas has been named head golf at College Misericordia, Athletics Director Dave Martin has announced. Foran replaces Arnie Garinger and Jack Hoover who retired after serving as co-head coaches for the first 14 years of the program’s history.
The owner and operator of Back Mountain Golf, Foran provides private lessons at the 18-hole practice facility. He has been a member of the PGA of America for 25 years and previously served as the Director of Golf at Huntsville Golf Club for 10 years.
Foran has also served as head golf professional at Ballymeade Golf Club in Falmouth, MA.
“We’re excited to add Tim to our coaching staff,” said Martin. “His knowledge of the game and teaching experience will be a tremendous asset to our program.”

2005 PAC Pre-Season Coaches' Poll

PAC Coaches Select Wesley as Pre-Season Golf Favorite
Aston, PA - Wesley College's men's golf team, a national powerhouse in recent seasons, has been selected as the unanimous pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches poll. Wesley, the six-time defending Conference Champions, earned all eight first-place votes for a total of 64 points.
Eastern University, which finished in second at the PAC Championships in each of the past two seasons, finished second in the poll, earning 48 points.
Neumann College, which tied Eastern for second place at the PAC Championships last season, and Alvernia College, which finished fourth at last year's PAC Championships, tied for third place in the poll, with each institution earning 46 points.
“We are very excited to be picked as the top team in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference for the upcoming season,” Wesley head coach Rick McCall said. “We have worked hard to build a national program here at Wesley and are looking forward to our Conference teams bringing regional and national honors to the PAC.”
Cabrini College (30), College Misericordia (25), Gwynedd-Mercy College (19) and Arcadia University (10) rounded out the voting.
The PAC Championships will be held from April 24-25 at Back Creek and Frog Hollow Golf Clubs in Middletown, DE.

PAC Players of the Week
March 28 - Alvernia College's Doug McConnell (Fr, Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) - McConnell shot a 76 to lead the Crusaders to a first-place finish at the Dickinson Invitational.
April 4 - Cabrini College's Brian Prospero (So, Philadelphia, PA) - Prospero won medalist honors with a 74 at Pinecrest Country Club, leading the team to a second-place finish at the Gwynedd-Mercy College Invitational.
April 11 - Neumann College's Matt LaPenta (So, Folsom, PA/Ridley) - LaPenta's matching rounds of 74 at Brandywine Country Club and LuLu Country Club led the Knights to a pair of wins.
April 18 - Wesley College's Zac Oakley (Sr., Lincoln, DE/Greenwood Mennonite) - Oakley took home medalist honors at the Wesley Invitational, shooting an even-par 72 to lead the Wolverines to a first-place finish.
