Milestone for Cabrini's Romano
Radnor, PA - Senior Kelli Romano (Sr, A, Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) opened the scoring with the 300th point of her career, and Cabrini never looked back, defeating Gwynedd-Mercy College 20-5 in a women's lacrosse contest in Radnor. Fellow senior Maureen McQuade added a career-high six goals for the Lady Cavs.
Romano reached the scoring plateau just 4:52 into the contest, beating Gwynedd-Mercy's goalie off a free position shot. She finished the game with two goals and four assists. Romano is Cabrini's all-time leader in goals (191), assists (114) and points (305).

NEUMANN'S McCREARY NAMED ECAC DIVISION III SOUTHERN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Aston, PA - Brandy McCreary, Neumann College (So, M/D, West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored seven goals and added five assists in Neumann's two PAC wins during the week. McCreary also had five ground balls and two forced turnovers on the week.

Lady Cavs Improve to 4-1 with 22-3 Win
Radnor, Pennsylvania, March 29, 2004 - Cabrini College's women's lacrosse head coach Jackie Neary recorded her 100th career victory on Monday afternoon, as Cabrini defeated Neumann College, 22-3. Senior Kelli Romano led the way for the Lady Cavs, with five goals and three assists.
Neary, a Swedesboro, NJ resident, has guided the Lady Cavs since the team's inception in 1996, when it competed as a club team. Since the program became an official varsity team in 1997, Neary is 100-28 and has taken the Lady Cavs to the PAC Championship Game every season, winning the last six PAC Titles. Cabrini is 66-1 in the PAC since 1998.

The Lady Cavaliers improved to 4-1 on the season (4-0 PAC) with Monday's win. Neumann dropped to 1-5 (1-2 PAC). 

Neary has also coached the College's field hockey team since 1996, compiling an overall record of 91-76 in her eight seasons.

2004 Women's Lacrosse PAC Pre-Season Coaches' Poll

PAC Coaches Select Cabrini as Pre-Season Women's Lacrosse Favorite
Aston, PA - Cabrini College's women's lacrosse team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches poll. Cabrini, the six-time defending Conference Champion, received 10 of 11 first-place votes for a total of 120 points.

Eastern University, which has finished as the runner-up in the PAC in four of the past five seasons, including last year, finished second in the poll, earning the other first-place vote and a total of 109 points. Neumann College finished third in the poll with 100 points.

"It is a nice honor to be selected as the pre-season favorite in the PAC," Cabrini head coach Jackie Neary said. "The PAC has some strong teams, and we are really looking forward to another exciting season in the league.

Wesley College (79), College Misericordia (70), Rosemont College (67), Cedar Crest College (56), Gwynedd-Mercy College (42), Immaculata University (32), Arcadia University (27) and Alvernia College (24) rounded out the voting.

The PAC Championship Game will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004.

Cabrini's Romano named PAC Player of the Year; Eastern's Hoy named PAC Rookie of the Year & Gwynedd-Mercy's Quintois named PAC Coach of the Year

Aston, PA - Seven-time champion Cabrini College was led by PAC Player of the Year Kelli Romano (Sr, A, Brook Haven, PA/Sun Valley) in having six players named to the All-PAC Women's Lacrosse first, second and honorable mention teams. Romano leads the Cavaliers into the NCAA Tournament at Salisbury with 56 goals and 29 assists for 85 points.

PAC regular season leader Eastern was led by PAC Rookie of the Year Kate Hoy (Fr, A/M, Tully, NY/Tully) who scored 78 points with 62 goals and 16 assists. The Eagles had five total player on the squad.

Sarah Quintois of Gwynedd-Mercy was named PAC Coach of the Year after leading the Griffins to a 10-7 record (7-3 PAC) for a third seed in the tournament and winning its first round game, after being picked to finish no higher than eighth in the preseason poll. Quintois also had the issue of carrying her first child through the balance of the season. She was honored along with four of her players for recognition.

March 8 - Alvernia College's Stacie Arnosky (Jr, A, Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) - Arnosky recorded nine goals, including one game-winner, and picked up six ground balls in a 2-1 week for the Crusaders.
March 15 - Gwynedd-Mercy College's Jen Mathesian (Jr, A, Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) - Mathesian scored four goals, including the game-winner in the game's final two minutes, as the Griffins opened Conference play with a 7-6 win over College Misericordia. Mathesian added two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers as well.
March 22 - Eastern University's Jenn Van Ness (Fr, G, Southampton, NJ/Lenape) - Van Ness made 34 saves, while allowing just 22 goals, as the Lady Eagles picked up a pair of wins on the week.
March 29 - Neumann College's Samantha Lafferty (So, A/M, Glenolden, PA/Interboro) - Lafferty scored 19 goals and added two assists in Neumann's 1-3 week.
April 5 - Rosemont College's Heather Barrie (So, A, Narberth, PA/Harriton) -Barrie scored 22 goals and added nine assists in Rosemont's 3-1 week.
April 12 - Neumann College's Brandy McCreary (So, M/D, West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) - McCreary scored seven goals and added five assists in Neumann's two PAC wins during the week. McCreary also had five ground balls and two forced turnovers on the week.
April 19 - Cabrini College's Kelli Romano (Sr, A, Brook Haven, PA/Sun Valley) - Romano scored 11 goals and added seven assists, as the Lady Cavs picked up four wins, including two Conference victories. Against Gwynedd-Mercy on Friday, she scored the 300th point of her career, becoming the first Lady Cavalier to reach that plateau.
April 26 - Neumann College's Melanie Pacheco (So, A, Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) - Pacheco scored 12 goals and added one assist, one ground ball and a caused turnover in a 2-0 PAC week.

2004 Women's Lacrosse PAC Championship

Saturday, May 1, 2004- Final
#2 Cabrini 9, @ #1 Eastern 8
St. David's, PA - Maureen McQuade, Missy Modesti and Dana Malmstrom all scored two goals apiece to lead Cabrini College (14-4) to a 9-8 win over Eastern University (13-4) in the 2004 PAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Game at Eastern. The title was Cabrini's seventh in a row, breaking the College record of six they shared with the men's basketball team.

With the win, Cabrini earned the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

Junior goalkeeper Jamie Knobler made 10 saves to preserve the win for the second-seeded Lady Cavaliers, who avenged their regular-season loss to the top-seeded Eagles. Cabrini ran its record to 74-2 against PAC competition over the past seven seasons.
McQuade was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Her second goal of the contest gave Cabrini a 9-4 advantage with 11:43 remaining in the second half. Eastern mounted a four-goal charge and pulled within one at 9-8 on a goal by Rachel Lenzo with 1:03 to play. After Cabrini controlled the ensuing draw, the Lady Cavs turned the ball over deep in the offensive end, and Eastern came the length of the field in the final 30 seconds but could not get a shot off before the final whistle.

The Lady Cavaliers have defeated Eastern in the PAC Championship Game in five of the past six seasons.

Cabrini grabbed control of the game early in the first half, getting goals from Malmstrom and Modesti in the first eight minutes. Eastern responded with two of their own to tie the game at 2-2 with 20:18 remaining on a goal by senior Clare Ruegsegger.

The Lady Cavs regained control with a four-goal run, in which senior Kelli Romano contributed a goal and two assists. Modesti made it a 6-2 game with 6:42 to play in the half. Eastern's Rachel Lenzo scored with 19 seconds to go in the half to cut Cabrini's lead to 6-3 at intermission.

Eastern's Jenn Van Ness made seven of her 13 saves in the stanza, and Knobler turned away four Eastern attempts.

McQuade gave Cabrini its four-goal lead back just 1:34 into the second half, and Malmstrom extended the Lady Cavs lead to 8-3 ten minutes later. Eastern's Julianne Ferguson made it an 8-4 game with 15:36 remaining.

After McQuade made it 9-4, Lenzo and Ruegsegger fueled the Eagles run over the game's final 10 minutes. Lenzo had a goal and two assists, and Ruegsegger had a pair of goals in the run, which came up just short.

Ruegsegger ended up with a game-high four goals, and Lenzo finished with one goal and four assists. Romano led Cabrini with one goal and three assists.

McQuade played an outstanding all-around game, finishing with five ground balls, four caused turnovers and one draw control, in addition to her two goals.
 
Wednesday, April 28, 2004- Semifinals
@ #1 Eastern 15, #4 Rosemont 13
St. Davids, PA - The Eastern University Women's lacrosse team (13-3 PAC) advanced one step closer to their season goal of winning their third PAC Championship by defeating Rosemont College (10-7) 15-13 in the conference semifinals. This will be the seventh finals appearance for the Eagles since the inception of PAC where they won the first two titles in 1993 and 1994. The Eagles, now under the direction of head coach Carolyn Urban, have not won the championship since the NCAA automatic qualifier.

Rosemont came out and grabbed the early lead in the first five minutes of the game as CeCelia Saunders netted two quick goals to put the visitors up 2-0. The Eagles came back with two goals of their own, the first by senior Clare Ruegsegger and the second by freshman Kate Hoy. Kate went on to score the next four goals in a row for the Eagles, but the home team found themselves down one at the break, 6-7. Eastern opened the second half with three consecutive goals by Arielle Parker, Kate Hoy and Christine Hickman, but the Ramblers answered right back with a three-spot of their own to make it 10-9 Rosemont. The two teams traded goals with neither team out of reach of the other. At the five minute mark, Eastern finally went up three, 15-12, on a goal by Julianne Furguson and that sealed the win for Eastern. Freshman Kate Hoy finished with seven goals on eight shots to lead the team to victory. Kate has led Eastern in scoring all year and is the first freshman since Andrea Collesidis to lead the Eagles in goals and points. Also scoring for the Eagles were seniors Arielle Parker with three, Rachel Lenzo and Clare Ruegsegger with one apiece and Diana Diffenderfer also added a single in the win.

Goalie Jenn Van Ness came up with some key saves in the second half for the Eagles and added 15 saves overall. Jenn is among the top goalies in the league in this her first season with Eastern.

The Championship game is slated for Saturday, May 1st at Eastern University. This is the first time the Eagles have claimed home field advantage when they knocked off 6-time defending champs Cabrini College 13-11 in the regular season battle. Cabrini advances to the title game for the eighth year in a row after dominating Gwynedd-Mercy, 18-1. Faceoff, and the third consecutive Cabrini/Eastern finals rivalry, is scheduled for 1pm.

Radnor, PA - Junior Missy Modesti scored a career-high seven goals, and senior Kelli Romano added four goals and five assists as Cabrini College defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College in a PAC Semifinal in Radnor. With the win, the second-seeded Lady Cavaliers advance to Saturday's PAC Championship Game, where they will take on Eastern University at 1 p.m.

Modesti scored three of Cabrini's first four goals in the first six minutes of the game. Romano assisted on two of them and scored Cabrini's other goal, as the Lady Cavaliers (13-4) took control from the opening draw. Cabrini added four more unanswered tallies to take an 8-0 lead on Modesti's fourth goal of the half, with 8:05 remaining. Gwynedd-Mercy (10-7) got on the board with 4:50 remaining in the half on a goal by Jenna Cooper.
Romano had a hand in Cabrini's first six goals of the second half, scoring three and assisting on the other three, as the Lady Cavs outscored Gwynedd-Mercy 10-0 after the intermission.

Junior Jamie Knobler made 10 saves for Cabrini. Gwynedd-Mercy's Grace Scully made nine saves in the losing effort.

Cabrini has captured the last six PAC Championships and has a record of 71-2 in PAC play in the past seven seasons. Eastern defeated Cabrini 13-11 on April 7, ending Cabrini's string of 39 consecutive wins against Conference opponents. Cabrini has defeated Eastern in the PAC Championship Game four times in the past five seasons.
 
Saturday, April 24, 2004- First Round
@ #3 Gwynedd-Mercy 13, #6 Wesley 8
Lower Gwynedd, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy's Women's Lacrosse team began the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoffs with a 13 to 8 first round victory over Wesley College. This was the first playoff win since the inception of the Gwynedd-Mercy College Women's Lacrosse program.

GMC goalkeeper Grace Scully played superbly throughout the game and finished with14 saves. Jen Mathersian led all scorers with 5 goals while Krista Johnes notched four goals and an assist and Melissa Burks tallied three goals and also added three assists.

Wesley got five goals from the combination of Caty Bivins (3) and Samantha Keller (2) while Ginny Roma notched a goal and two assists in a losing cause. Stephanie Hartsoe saved 9 Griffins shots while keeping the game close early on.

The Griffins came out firing taking a 3-0 lead just 5:33 into the game as Mathesian scored the first two goals of the contest and Krista Johnes got into the scoring column to make the score 3-0 GMC. Wesley looked to cut into that lead after a goal by Stacey Johnson, assisted by Ginny Roma, but the Griffins' Burks and Johnes would not allow the Wolverines to get any closer as they quickly put the ball in the net to increase the Griffins lead to 5-1.

The Wolverines would not go away quietly though as they tallied two goals in succession narrowing the deficit to 5-3 as Roma and Keller each scored with just under ten minutes to go in the half. Johnes and Mathesian quickly answered for the Griffins with goals of their own, keeping the GMC lead at 4.

Caty Bivins scored the first of her three goals with 4:40 left in the half to end the scoring in the first half and cut the Gwynedd lead to 7-4.

In the second half, the Wolverines came out with a quick goal by Jeanette Panunto that closed the gap to 7-5. But, the Griffins spoiled Wesley's comeback effort with three consecutive goals upping the lead to 10-5 and ensuring the first round victory, 13-8.
 
@ #4 Rosemont 11, #5 Neumann 6
Rosemont, PA – Rosemont College hosted Neumann College in the first round of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament. The number four seed Rosemont Ramblers came out on top of the number five seed Neumann Knights with an 11-6 victory.

The Ramblers netted two unanswered goals to start the half, one from rookie CeCelia Saunders at the 23:37 mark and one from sophomore Jennifer Dugan at the 17:07 mark. Both teams were held scoreless until the 9:32 mark when Brandy McCreary answered with a goal for the Knights. Rosemont and Neumann battled back and forth for the rest of the half, but it was the Ramblers who went into half with a 4-3 advantage.

Neumann found the back of the net to start the second half with a goal from Melanie Pacheco at the 28:27 mark. Rosemont’s Saunders answered with one of her own.

McCreary kept it close for Neumann, scoring one at the 23:39 mark, but Rosemont pulled away with five unanswered goals and kept an injury plagued Neumann scoreless until the 1:34 mark. Senior co-captains Colleen Conway and Kathleen Pitts put the finishing touches on the win for the Ramblers with a dish from Pitts to Conway for the 11th and final goal of the day.

Leading all scorers was Saunders with 5 goals. The Ramblers rounded out the rest of their scoring with two goals apiece from Pitts, Conway and Dugan. Neuman’s McCreary and Pacheco each netted two goals while Kristen Voss and Samantha Lafferty chipped in one apiece. Lafferty dished off two assists while McCreary and Michele Coderre dished off one apiece. Rosemont’s Dugan, Saunders, Pitts and Heather Barrie all had one assist on the day.

Saunders came up big defensively, with eight caused turnovers, while Pitts and Kyleen Roe each had four caused turnovers. Pitts led the Ramblers in ground balls, scooping up five. For Neumann it was Lafferty and Jill Rodgers who led the way defensively, combining for eight caused turnovers.

Rosemont keeper Krista Froio had a stellar day in the cage, making crucial saves throughout the game. She finished the day with 13 saves, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Neumann keeper Amanda Hopper had eight saves on the day.

Rosemont will travel #1 seed Eastern University for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 28th

2004 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship
Saturday, May 8, 2004- Regional Semifinal
@ Salisbury (13-4) 18, Cabrini (14-5) 7
Salisbury, Md - Senior attacker Jessica White and sophomore midfielder Erin McCarthy scored four goals each to power #4 ranked Salisbury to an 18-7 win over Cabrini in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament Saturday. The Sea Gulls (15-2) advance to Sunday’s regional final to play #5 ranked Gettysburg, which defeated #11 ranked Washington & Lee 13-8 in Saturday’s second regional semifinal.
White scored three straight goals to open the game and McCarthy added the next two as Salisbury built a 5-0 lead in the opening 16:24 of the game. Cabrini (14-5) answered by scoring three of the next five goals to pull to within 7-3 with 7:07 remaining in the half.
Salisbury countered with three of the final four markers in the first half, including goals by Lynsey Bateman and Mary Bateman in the final minute, both assisted by McCarthy, to build a 10-4 halftime lead. McCarthy finished with a game-high four assists in addition to her four goals.

White and McCarthy tallied the first two goals of the second half as the lead grew to 12-4. Cabrini pulled to with 13-6 on Amy Pia’s goal with 13:44 remaining, but Salisbury closed by scoring five of the final six goals for the final margin. Sophomore Amanda Tack and senior Amber Stansbury, who each finished with three goals, scored two each in SU’s closing run.
Salisbury outshot Cabrini 33-22, and controlled 17 of 27 draws in the game. Salisbury’s Ali Goetz finished with 11 saves, while Cabrini goalie Jamie Knobler registered 13 saves.
Sophomore midfielder Dana Malmstrom led the Cavaliers with two goals. Sophomore Erin Romano finished with one goal and one assist.

Salisbury, which extended its winning streak to 10 games, advances to the national quarterfinal round for the fifth time in team history, including the second straight season.
