PAC Championship Game
Saturday, May 5, 2007
#2 Eastern University 12, #1 Cabrini College 11
After coming from behind to win in 2006, the Eastern University Women's Lacrosse team needed a pair of late goals to win their second straight PAC Championship Saturday afternoon. In a thrilling back and forth game, Eastern was able to take the final lead of the game with thirty-three seconds remaining on Kate Hoy's seventh goal of the game.
The Eagles took the first lead of the game on a Christine Hickman goal seven minutes into the contest, but the host Cavaliers battled back with two straight to take the lead with 9:43 gone. On the ensuing draw Hoy found Jessie Basch in front of the goal, and Basch fought off a check while turning and firing her first of two goals for the contest. Basch then fed Hoy for two straight goals as the Eagles pushed ahead. Katie Choquette scored on another Basch assist with eleven minutes to play to give the Eagles the biggest lead either team would have at 5-2.
After an extended period of physical defending, the host Cavaliers showed their toughness as they bounced back with three goals in a minute to tie the game at five with two and a half minutes to play. After an Eastern turnover deep in the Cabrini end, Kerri Ricker carried the ball the length of the field and set up Christina Romano for the go ahead goal with two seconds on the clock.
The Cavaliers outshot the Eagles 14-10 in the opening frame, but Jenn Van Ness made eight of her sixteen saves to keep the Eagles in the game.
Hoy seized command of the game early in the second half with a pair of unassisted goals to lift the Eagles back to a 6-5 advantage. Cabrini standout Katelyn Penrose scored her second of the game to tie the game off the draw of Hoy's second. Basch picked up her 62nd assist of the season when she found Hoy in front of the goal to give the Eagles the lead with just over 25 minutes left.
Cabrini again tied the game at eight when Penrose set up Erin Nollen for her third of four goals on the afternoon. Basch then put away her 58th goal of the year to give the Eagles the lead again with just over seventeen to play. Emilie Greto and Nollen scored in quick succession to lift the Cavaliers to a 10-9 lead with 16 minutes to play.
The Eagles earned possession back and Hoy buried her sixth goal of the day on a free position shot to tie the game at ten with ten minutes left. April Kaufman scored her first goal of the contest for Cabrini with just under five minutes to play to give the the hosts the lead. After Cabrini controlled the ensuing draw, the Eastern defense needed to force a turnover against a stalling Cabrini team, and they were able to do that deep in their own end, and the ball came to Katie Choquette on the right wing. The sophomore attacker carried the ball in deep, and as the Cabrini defenders looked to find Hoy and Basch, Choquette attacked the goal. She dodged a pair of defenders and spun in front of the cage before firing her twentieth of the year to tie the game with 2:08 on the clock.
The Eagles still needed to earn possession back after losing the draw. After forcing a turnover, the Eagles pushed the ball up the field, and had two shots saved before the Cavaliers took possession of the ball on a violation. As the hosts were working the ball out of their end, Erin Fries and Choquette double-teamed the defender and popped the ball free. Choquette scooped up the ground ball and lobbed a pass over a couple defenders to Hoy who had found a hole in the defense. The senior attacked the goal immediately dodged two defenders and fired a side armed shot just as she and the goalie collided 5 meters from the goal. Hoy's seventh of the game is her 84th of the season, and gave the Eagles the lead they would need to advance to the NCAA Tournament this upcoming week.
The Cavaliers had thirty seconds left to work for a tie, and they earned the draw. Linnea Davis ripped a ball free after a double violation caused a jump ball situation outside the restraining line, and the Eagles ren out the clock. Eastern Goalie Jenn Van Ness, who missed last year's title while working toward her athletic training degree, made several huge saves in the second half to give the Eagles a chance to win on her birthday.
Coach Azzarano, who also won a field hockey title this fall, said of the game, "I am so proud of the way this group of girls fought back. Their passion and commitment to each other is just amazing." The Eagles (15-2) will find out their next game when the NCAA Committee announces seeds late Sunday night.

#1 Cabrini College 19, #4 Neumann College 6
RADNOR Pa. (May 2) -- The Cabrini Cavaliers earned their 10th straight trip to the conference championship game with a 19-6 win over visiting Neumann College Wednesday afternoon in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse semi-finals.
Cabrini advances to Saturday’s championship game (12 p.m.) where they will take on Eastern College. Eastern topped Gwynedd Mercy, 19-12 in the other semi-final game.
The Cavaliers, winners of eight straight conference titles (1998-2005) lost a one-goal heart-breaker to Eastern College in last year’s PAC championship. Coach Jackie Neary’s team went undefeated in regular season play this season and entered the playoffs determined to regain that title.
Cabrini (15-3, 10-0 PAC regular season) opened play in the first minute playing like a team on a mission as freshman Erin Nollen scored on a feed from Kerri Ricker just 40 seconds into the game. Thirty-five seconds later Katelyn Penrose scored on an unassisted goal to give Cabrini a 2-0 with less than a minute played.
Cabrini never looked back as Ricker collected a first half hat trick and fed Nollen for three more Cabrini goals to help Cabrini cruise to a 13-0 first half lead.
Nollen opened the second half scoring before Neumann’s Gabby D’Ambrosio got the Knights on the board with 27 minutes left in the game. Dominque Thompson scored back to back goals for Neumann to cut the lead to 14-3 but the Cavaliers reeled off the next five goals to end the flurry.
Nollen finished with five goals and one assist while Ricker fired in three goals and assisted on five. April Kauffman scored three goals and collected one assist. Other scorers for Cabrini were Anna Scholl (one goal, one assist), Emilie Greto (one goal, one assist), Christina Romano (one goal, two assists) and Allison Sachs. Danielle Rothermel and Kelli Wilson each collected an assist.
Gabby D’Ambrosio and Dominque Thompson each scored two goals for Neumann.

#2 Eastern University 19, #3 Gwynedd-Mercy College 12
ST. DAVID'S, Pa.(May 2) -- When the Eastern University Women's Lacrosse Team and the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins stood tied 8-8 at the half, Head Coach Camrin Azzarano told her girls to breathe. The Eagles had battled back from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead at 8-7, before surrendering a late goal. The coach's advice worked as the Eagles stormed out of the gate in the second half and earned a 19-12 win over a very competitive Gwynedd-Mercy team. the win sets up a rematch of last year's PAC Championship game at Cabrini on Saturday.
Jessie Basch continued her stellar sophomore campaign with a four goal and seven assist effort to lift her season point total to 114. A strong second half defense and improvement on draw controls allowed the Eagles to gain possession and take over the second frame. Coach Azzarano said of the game, "At the half we just needed to remember who we were at what we try to do. Kate [Hoy] made some adjustments on the draws, but most importantly we needed to find our 'A-game,' Gwynedd played a tremendous first half, and we needed to match their intensity while maintaining a sense of calm. We found that in the second half."
The Griffins scored the first three goals of the match in the opening five minutes. Eastern didn't pick up their first goal of the game until the tenth minute when Basch found Amy Norman in front of the cage for the first of her two goals on the afternoon. Meghan Volz responded for the Griffins with her second of four goals on the day to bump the visitor's lead back to three.
Erin Reimel scored her first of three on the day for the Eagles in the 14th minute on a pass from fellow sophomore Erin Fries, but the Griffins answered back to keep the lead at 5-2. Every quarterback has a favorite receiver, and Basch connected with Hoy for the first of four connections on the afternoon with 15:15 on the clock. The Eagles then took the draw and Hoy found Fries for her first of three on the afternoon to make it 5-4.
Caitlin Volz then scored for the Griffins to push the lead back to 6-4 before Hoy scored two straight to tie the game. the first came on a pass from Basch and the second came on a free position shot. The Griffins refused to go away and retook the lead on a nice combination in front of the goal. Hoy then returned the favor to Basch with 4:10 remaining to tie the game.
Reimel's free position goal with 1:35 to play in the first gave the Eagles their first lead of the game. In the game between the two teams in March, the Eagles won 20-3 on a day with piles of snow surrounding Eastern's turf field. The Griffins had lost just a pair of games since then, and they battled back to tie the game again on a quick stick goal from Kaitlin Pope of a nice pass from behind the cage by Lauren Sheils with ten seconds left in the half.
Azzarano then made her team inhale and exhale. The second half was all Eagles. Coach Azzarano commented "Gwynedd did a really good job unsettling us early, and we needed to make some adjustments to regain spacing on the field. Out of halftime, the girls did a better job of understanding what to run when, and we were able to get the opportunities we needed. Courtney [Brennan] Linnea [Davis], and Sarah [Hager] each helped us to earn possession back on numerous occasions." Brennan lead the team with five caused turnovers, and picked up three ground balls and three draw controls. Davis caused a pair of turnovers and collected four draws and four ground balls. Hagar picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Basch found Hoy to open the half and give the Eagles the lead for good. Katie Choquette then batted in a ball in front of the cage from Fries with 26:40 to play. Fries scored her second of the day from Hoy, and then Hickman converted a Basch pass to make it 12-8. Basch scored her second of the game from Choquette before Sheils answered with a free-position goal.
The Eagles ended the game with solid possession and a 6-3 run over the last seventeen minutes. Hoy finished the day with four goals and three assists to give her 77 goals and 31 assists on the year. As of the last NCAA reporting period, Hoy's 73 goals was tops in the country. She and Basch were among just three players to have eclipsed the 100 point mark.
The Eagles travel across the street to take on Cabrini at a to be determined time on Saturday.

The Eastern team started the match with a strong defensive effort, but the deeper Eagles of Mary Washington exploded for nine goals in the last twelve minutes of the first half to take a 10-6 lead into the break on the way to a 19-9 win.
The Eastern team, which set a school record with 15 wins on the year and earned their second consecutive PAC title, got six goals from Kate Hoy, and a twenty save effort from fellow senior Jenn Van Ness in the cage. The hosts jumped to a quick one goal lead in the opening moments on an unassisted goal from Kaitlyn Barker. Hoy struck back with two straight to give the visiting Eagles a 2-1 lead. Solid play from the Eastern defense and several great saves from Van Ness allowed that lead to stand until into the 18th minute of the match.
Mary Washington scored three straight goals in a two minute spell to seize a 4-2 lead.
Hoy took the ensuing draw the length of the field for her third of the match to close the deficit to 4-3 with just under eleven minutes left in the first half. Margaret Murray set up Emily Talbot for two consecutive goals to stretch the Mary Washington lead to 6-3. Hoy then scored on an Erin Fries pass, and Jessie Basch put in her first of two on the afternoon to cut the deficit to 6-5 with seven minutes to play.
The superior depth of the hosts seemed to take effect as Mary Washington scored four straight goals in a five minute spell to seize control of the game with a 10-5 lead. Christine Hickman gave the visiting Eastern squad a glimmer of hope when she buried a rebound of her own shot with twenty seconds to play in the half.
The second half saw Mary Washington answer every shot from the Eagles with two of their own, and they outscored their guests 9-3 in the second frame. Basch set up Hoy and scored an unassisted goal in the second half. Hoy closed out the scoring with her 90th goal of the season with just under two minutes to play on a pass from Katie Choquette.
The Eagles graduate five seniors including Hoy, Van Ness, Hickman, Amy Norman, and defender Jenessa Winter.

With the loss, the Cavaliers end the season with a 16-5 record. McDaniel, the runner-up in the Centennial Conference, finishes out at 14-5
