2004-05 Men's Basketball Pre-Season Poll

PAC Coaches Select Gwynedd-Mercy as Favorite in Men's Basketball

Aston, PA- Gwynedd-Mercy College's men's basketball team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches poll. The defending-champion Griffin received eight of the nine first-place votes and earned 80 points in the poll to claim the honor.

Eight-time PAC Champion Cabrini College was the runner-up in the poll, earning 66 points. Neumann College finished third with 64 points and garnered the other first-place vote.

"It is an honor to be chosen at the top of the PAC poll," Gwynedd-Mercy head coach John Baron said. "Many teams in our Confernece have improved tremendously, and I expect the league to be strong on a regional and a national level."

Alvernia College (53), Eastern University (50), Wesley College (25), Misericordia University (24), Marywood University (22), and Arcadia University (21) rounded out the voting.

Gwynedd-Mercy College's Badou Gaye (Sr, C, Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) - Gaye averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds in a pair of Conference wins for the Griffins during the week.

Marywood University's Tim Smallwood (Jr, F, Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) - Smallwood averaged 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game as the Pacers reeled off three Conference wins.

February 7

Gwynedd-Mercy College's Jeff Thomas (Sr, F, Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann) - Thomas averaged 17.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and added 3.3 steals per game in a 3-0 PAC week for the Griffins.

January 31

Alvernia College's Chris Talley (Jr, F, Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) & Gwynedd-Mercy College's Jeff Thomas (Sr, F, Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann) - Talley averaged 20.3 points and 5.7 rebounds as the Crusaders swept three Conference games during the week. Thomas averaged 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as th Griffins picked up a pair of PAC wins. He added 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals per contest in wins over Eastern and Misericordia

January 24

Marywood University's Ryan Rogan (Sr, Archbald, PA/Scranton Prep) - Rogan scored 38 points in the Pacers' 73-70 win over Neumann College. Rogan made 13 of his 15 field-goal attempts in the contest, including 10-of-12 from beyond the three-point line. Remarkably, all 38 of his points came in the second half.

January 17

Neumann College's Andre Wright (Jr, F, Philadelphia, PA/Ben Franklin) - Wright averaged 14.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game as the Knights won two of three conetsts on the week.

January 10

Gwynedd-Mercy College's Badou Gaye (Sr, C, Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) - Gaye averaged 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game as the Griffins split four contests on the week.

Cabrini College's Ty Teasley (Sr, F, Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) - Teasley averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, two blocks and 0.5 assists per game as the Cavaliers split a pair of contests.

December 13

Marywood University's Tim Smallwood (Jr, G, Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) - Smallwood averaged 27.3 points in a 1-2 week for the Pacers. Smallwood began his week with 31 points in Marywood's 69-68 loss to Cabrini College on Monday. He added 23 points in a 77-74 loss at Wilkes University on Thursday, before scoring 28 points in the Pacers' 70-68 Conference win over Wesley College on Saturday.

December 6

Alvernia College's Damon Bogan (Fr, F, Oxford, PA/Oxford) - Bogan averaged 21.3 points and 10.7 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Crusaders. Bogan was named the MVP of the Optimist Tournament at Salisbury during the week.

November 29

Alvernia College's Zach Straining (Jr, F, Paxtang, PA/Central Dauphin East) -Straining averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in a pair of Crusaders victories during the week.

November 22

Marywood University's Tim Smallwood (Jr, Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) - Smallwood was named the Most Valuable Player of the season-opening Laurel Line Tournament. Smallwood led the Pacers to their first-ever 2-0 start, averaging 19 points in the tournament.

2005 Men's Basketball PAC Championship

#1 Gwynedd-Mercy 81, #2 Alvernia 63

Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Alvernia, 81-63, in the championship game of the 2005 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament Friday evening at the Griffin Complex.

The Griffins claim the PAC title for the second year in a row and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

Tournament MVP Badou Gaye led the charge, registering 26 points and 18 rebounds, both game highs as Gwynedd-Mercy downed Alvernia in the finals for the second year in a row.

Gaye, who also claimed his second-consecutive tournament MVP award, also reached a milestone, as he scored his 2,000th career point with his bucket with 3:09 in the first half.

Sophomore Chris DelBrocco contributed 17 points.

Chris Talley led the Crusaders (17-10) with 23 points. Mike Brock added 12 and Lamar Brickus chipped in 10. Alvernia shot 21-of-65 (32%) but connected on 11 treys in the game. Talley and Brock drained four each.

The Griffins never trailed in the contest as DelBrocco's three-point play off layup and foul shot gave GMC a 35-26 lead with 2:45 in the first half. Gwynedd-Mercy went into the locker room up 39-28.

Alvernia opened the second half by nailing back-to-back longballs to cut the deficit to 39-34. But back came the Griffins, using a 15-5 run capped by sophomore Francis Bowe's three-pointer to take a 54-39 lead with just under 12 minutes in the contest.

From there, the Griffins pushed their lead to as much as 20 points as GMC won their fifth-straight game.

Bowe added eight points while senior Courtney Griffin recorded six assists, five boards, and four points. The Griffins connected on 28-of-63 (44%) from the floor and outreboudned Alvernia, 50-33.

Gwynedd-Mercy will find out whom and where they will play in the NCAA Division III Tournament as the selection show is this Sunday, February 27th at NCAASports.com.

Tuesday, February 22, 2005-Semifinals


#1 Gwynedd-Mercy 68, #4 Misericordia 57

Gwynedd Valley, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy advanced to the PAC Championship with a 68-57 win over Misericordia Tuesday night in a semifinal game of the 2005 PAC Tournament.

The top-seeded Griffins will face Alvernia, the No.2 seed who defeated Cabrini, 64-56, in the other semifinal, here at the Griffin Complex on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last season's PAC Championship.

Senior Badou Gaye led all scorers with 23 points and 16 rebounds for his 19th double-double on the season.

Josh Kendrick propelled the fourth-seeded Cougars (11-16) with 20 points and Tony Rezykowski added 11, as CM was good for 19-of-59 (32%) shooting and 7-of-31 from downtown on the night.

The Griffins (22-4) led 31-23 at halftime and had their biggest lead of the game at 47-33 with 14:05 in the contest. But Misericordia chipped away at the GMC lead, getting down to just seven at 61-54 with just 1:36 on the clock courtesy of two Rezykowski free-throws.

Gaye blocked three shots and sophomore Chris DelBrocco added 10 points and seven assists.

GMC shot 39% (25-of-64) and held a 47-38 rebound edge.

#2 Alvernia 64, #3 Cabrini 56

Reading, PA - Junior forward Zach Straining (Paxtang, PA/Central Dauphin East) scored seven of his game-high 24 points during a pivotal first-half run as second seeded Alvernia College topped #3 Cabrini, 64-56, Tuesday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Semifinal action at the Physical Education Center.

The Crusaders (17-9) will travel to top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College, a 68-57 winner over #4 Misericordia University, for Thursday's PAC Final. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 19, 2005- First Round

#4 Misericordia 70, #5 Marywood 54

Dallas, PA - Andre Little led four Misericordia University players in double figures as the Cougars topped Marywood, 70-54, in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference quarter final playoff game, Saturday at the Andeson Center.

Little had a game-high 17 points, including 8-11 from the free throw line, and addd two assists and three steals. Josh Kendrick added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Corey Brown had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars. Michael Morak had a pair of three-pointers on his way to a 13-point performance for CM.

Ryan Rogan had a team-high 12 points for Marywood while Tim Smallwood added 11 points. Joe Buckzo had seven rebounds to lead the Pacers.

Marywood grabbed a quick 5-0 lead, but CM responded with a 9-0 run and eventually led 26-19 at halftime.

Misericordia improved to 11-15 and will visit top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy in Tuesday's PAC semi finals while Marywood had its four-game winning streak snapped and ends the season at 11-15.

#3 Cabrini 76, #6 Neumann 63

Radnor, PA – Senior Messiah Reames scored 18 points to lead five Cavaliers in double figures, as Cabrini College (14-12) defeated Neumann College (11-15) 76-63 in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament First-Round Game. Cabrini advances to the PAC Semifinals at Alvernia College on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

The third-seeded Cavaliers took a one-point lead into halftime, but they quickly expanded the lead to 10 points six minutes into the second half on a field goal by Jim McMahon. Jeff Dailey’s second three-pointer of the half expanded Cabrini’s lead to 14 points, 56-42, with 8:21 remaining.

There were a few anxious moments down the stretch, but the Knights could not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Randy Maultsby led Neumann with 19 points.

McMahon finished with 15 points for the Cavaliers, Ty Teasley added 12 points and eight rebounds, Dailey finished with 11 points, and Randy Reid had 10 points.

Cabrini and Alvernia, seeded second in the PAC, split a pair of games in the regular season, each winning on their own court. Cabrini won 69-63 on January 12, and the Crusaders turned the tables, winning 78-58, on January 29.

2005 Men's Basketball NCAA Division III Championship

Thursday, March 3, 2005- First Round


Union (17-11) 84, Gwynedd-Mercy (23-5) 70
Gwynedd Valley, PA - Union's John Cagianello scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Dutchmen to an 84-70 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in a first-round game of the 2005 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament Thursday evening at the Griffin Complex.

Union (17-11) will advance to Saturday's second-round game at the University of Rochester. The Griffins finish the season at 23-5.

Chris DelBrocco was one of three GMC players in double figures as the sophomore bucketed 20 points.

Cagianello netted 18 of his points in the first half as the Dutchmen dug out of an early six-point deficit. His second trey of the half tied the game at 12-12. He would again strike from downtown for his third three-pointer of the stanza to give Union a 35-28 lead right before the half and help the Dutchmen enter the locker room up 40-35 at the break.

The Griffins stormed back early in the second half as DelBrocco sank a three-pointer and senior Badou Gaye followed with a dunk to give GMC a 49-47 lead with 15 minutes to play. It was the last lead for Gwynedd as back-to-back longballs from Cagianello and Chris Murphy helped to restore a Union 57-51 edge.

Gwynedd-Mercy could only climb to as much as 68-63 with 6:02 to play before a 13-2 run by Union over the next four minutes extended the lead to double digits.

Gaye finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while senior Jeff Thomas added 13 points and 10 boards.

Devon Bruce chipped in 15 points and nine caroms and teammate Brian Scordato contributed 12 points.

Both teams shot 28-of-61 (45%) from the floor but Union connected on 10-of 29 (34%) from beyond the arc. The Dutchmen sank 18 of 20 tries from the line while the Griffins were only 9-of-19.

2005 Men's Basketball ECAC South Region Championship

Wednesday, March 2, 2005- Quarterfinals

#4 Scranton (20-6) 62, #5 Alvernia (17-11) 56

Scranton, PA - Senior forward Brian O’Donnell (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) scored 17 points, including the 1500th of his career, and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to lead The University of Scranton to a 62-56 victory over Alvernia College in the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Region championships Wednesday evening at the John J. Long, S.J., Center.

Freshman point-guard Randy Arnold added 14 points for Scranton, which improved to 20-6 on the season and will face Franklin & Marshall this Friday, March 4, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Junior forward Zach Straining led the Crusaders, who ended their season with a 17-11 overall record, with a game-high 19 points, including 15 in the second-half. Junior forward Chris Talley and junior guard Ryan Finger added 10 points apiece for Alvernia, which shot only 33.3 percent from the field (20 of 60) and was out-rebounded by a 39-30 margin.

The Royals built up an early 7-point lead and led by six, 16-10, before scoring only seven points in the final 10 minutes of the first-half to hold on to a 23-21 lead by intermission. O’Donnell finished with seven points and eight rebounds as Scranton connected on only 8 of 25 shots from the field (32.0 percent). The Crusaders also had trouble from the field, making just 10 of 30 field goal attempts (33.3 percent).

The game was tied three times in the second-half before Scranton went on a 13-5 run over a five-minutes span to take a 45-38 lead with 8:55 remaining. Alvernia twice cut the Royal lead to one, the last of which came on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Garrett Etzel with 1:56 left.

O’Donnell answered with a traditional 3-point play to give Scranton a 56-52 lead 10 seconds later. Alvernia turned it over on its next two possessions before Arnold extended the lead to six, 58-52, with a pair of free throws with 39 seconds remaining. The closest the Crusaders got the rest of the way was four points, 59-55, with 25 seconds left on one of two free throws by junior guard Lamar Brickus.

O’Donnell’s double-double in points and rebounds was his 12th of the season and the 41st of his career. He is now 14th on the University of Scranton all-time scoring list with 1,512 points.

The all-time series between the Royals and Alvernia is now tied at 1-1.
