NCAA First Round Game
Friday, March 2, 2007
6:00pm Lincoln University 91, Alvernia College 71 (at Catholic University)
Washington, D.C. (Mar. 2, 2007) - Lincoln University hit 19 of 30 second half shots and never let Alvernia College put together a significant run Friday evening in a 91-76 win in first round action of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship at Catholic University's DuFour Center.
Lincoln (19-9) shot 40 percent from the floor in the first half and pushed a one-point lead to four at the break, 38-34, when sophomore guard Dante Blanton (Baltimore, MD) hit a 3 on the final possession of the first half. After a Lincoln free throw to open the second half, Alvernia (23-5) freshman Matt King (Phoenixville, PA/St. Pius X) hit a 3 to cut the gap to two.
Twice over the next three minutes the Crusaders hit shots to pull within two, but Lincoln junior Tyreek Byard (Philadelphia, PA) started and ended a 12-4 run that pushed the gap to 10 points, 53-43, with 14:25 to play. The lead grew to a dozen before Alvernia rattled off seven straight to pull within five, 57-52, with 11:08 on the clock. King started the run with a layup and senior guard Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) hit one of just two 3s on the night.
Blanton answered with one of his four 3s and in a blink the lead was back to double digits. Alvernia pulled within seven points twice, but got no closer as the Lions pulled away for the 15-point win. Lincoln will play in Saturday's second round game at Catholic versus the winner of the game between Messiah and Catholic.
Lincoln place four players in double figures led by Byard who finished with 18. Blanton scored 17, Dwight Dean (Balimore, MD) added 16 points, and Thomas Lahart (Philadelphia, PA) finished with 15. Etzel joined Shawell in double figures with 15 points as did King with 12 and Finger, who finished with 11 points and a career-high tying nine assists. It was the fifth straight game that Finger handed out eight or more assists. Shawell led the Crusaders on the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds and sophomore Tyrone Bradley (Chester, PA/Chester) finished the night one point short of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Alvernia, which entered Friday shooting nearly 10 percentage points better than its opponents, shot 40 percent from the floor while Lincoln's 63 percent second-half effort lifted it to nearly 51 percent. The Lions reached 90 points for the 10th time this season and are 9-1 in those games with the only loss a 109-99 setback versus Seton Hill. This was the first Alvernia opponent to score 90 points this season.
Alvernia closes the season with a 23-5 record for the second consecutive season, and Etzel, the 19th player to pass 1,000 points at Alvernia finished his career with 1,058 points.

#1 Alvernia College 70, #3 Immaculata University 55
READING, PA – Senior guard Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) and sophomore forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) combined to shoot 7-for-9 from 3-point range to lead top-seeded Alvernia College to a 70-55 win over #3 Immaculata University Friday evening in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Championship Final at the Physical Education Center.
Etzel finished the night with a game-high 19 points and earned Most Valuable Player honors for the Championship. Shawell hit a game-sealing 3 with 3:15 to play and finished the night with 18 points. Freshman forward Matt King (Phoenixville, PA/St. Pius X) was also hot from long range hitting 3-for-5, two of which came in the opening two-plus minutes of the second half as the Crusaders scored the first eight points of the half to open up a two-point halftime lead. Alvernia ran its home win streak to a record 24 games, and could continue the home schedule if the NCAA selection committee awards it one of 11 four-team regionals next weekend.
King knocked down a 3 on the opening possession of the second half and when his third 3 of the night went down two minutes later the Crusaders (23-4) were up 10 points, 38-28. Immaculata (12-16) trimmed the lead to eight points on a Robert Jones (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) jumper and a minute later Etzel and Shawell hit back-to-back 3s to push the lead to 14. The gap remained double digits until a Scott Marston (Norristown, PA/Kennedy Kenrick) dunk capped a 4-0 spurt to cut the lead to nine, 57-48, with 3:51 to play.
Alvernia worked time off the clock on its next possession and Shawell made a move near the right elbow and buried a 3 that sealed the Crusaders ticket to the NCAA Championship for the sixth time. Alvernia will await the committee’s decision on location and opponent for its first round game which will likely be next Friday.
Alvernia broke a tie at 13-all midway thru the first half to take a 21-13 lead as King and Etzel each hit 3s during an 8-0 run. Immaculata answered with an 8-1 run just before the half to tie the game at 28 before a Shawell jumper gave the hosts a 30-28 lead at the break.
Shawell totaled his game-high on 7-of-15 shooting including three triples and added seven rebounds. Etzel tallied 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown, while King and senior Ryan Finger (Lancaster, PA/Lampeter Strasburg) each totaled 11 points. Finger also dished out a game-high eight assists, his seventh game of eight or more helpers this season.

Alvernia finished the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field and committed just 11 turnovers for the game. The Mighty Macs converted just 35.5 percent and out-rebounded the Crusaders, 41-31, but were 0-for-6 beyond the arc as compared to 10-of-16 for the Crusaders.

Reading, Pa. – Sophomore forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) slammed home two of his game-high 22 points early in a decisive 20-2 first-half run that gave top-seeded Alvernia College a comfortable 34-16 halftime lead en route to a 71-48 win over #4 Eastern University in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball semifinal action Tuesday evening at the Physical Education Center.
Senior guard Ryan Finger (Lancaster, PA/Lampeter Strasburg) broke a 14-all tie with a driving layup, and added a steal and assist when Shawell hammered home a dunk on the break that brought a packed house of gold-clad Crusader fans to their feet. Eastern answered with a layup from junior forward Matt Malloy (Somerdale, NJ/Camden Catholic), but failed to score for the final seven minutes of the half as the Crusaders pulled away.
Alvernia sophomore Tyrone Bradley (Chester, PA/Chester), who collected his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, scored on a layup during the early run and freshman Matt King (Phoenixville, PA/St. Pius) hit a 3 for a seven point edge, 23-16.
Shawell scored the next six for Alvernia and Bradley worked the offensive glass for a putback with under a minute to go in the half and the hosts led 31-16. Eastern, which missed its final eight shots from the floor in the first half, came up empty on its final possession, and Etzel’s pull-up 3 just short of the first-half buzzer took any remaining wind out of the Eagles’ sails.
Eastern started the first half shooting better than 50 percent from the floor, but with the late struggles finished the half at 30 percent. The Crusaders, who started 3-for-11, finished the half shooting 48 percent from the floor and blitzed through the second half shooting 60 percent from the floor.
Finger opened the second half with a layup and Alvernia held its first 20-point lead of the night, 36-16. Eastern cut the lead to 14 points twice early in the second half, but got no closer the rest of the way. Alvernia built its largest lead of the night, a 26 point advantage with 2:23 left in the game, again on a Shawell dunk.
Eastern freshman Jason Reels (Paterson, NJ/Hawthorne Acad.) led the Eagles (16-11) with 14 points and Malloy added a dozen. Alvernia senior Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) reached double-figures for the Crusaders with 11 and King finished with 13.

#4 Eastern University 77, #5 Neumann College 67
ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Matt Malloy made 15 straight free throws in the second half on the way to a game high 22 points as the Eastern University Eagles earned a trip to the PAC Semifinals with a 77-67 win over Neumann College. The Eagles improve to 16-10 on the year, and will travel to Alvernia on Tuesday Night.
The Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 advantage early as four different players scored baskets, but the Knights responded with back to back three pointers from Ronnie Fields and Dehran Patrick. Five of Neumann's seven field goals in the first half came from behind the the arc, and the Eagles took advantage of the Knights 26% shooting to fore a 33-23 lead at the break. Senior guard Lenny DiMaria, playing in his last home game as an Eagle, led Eastern into the break with 8 points. Kevin Raab came off the bench for the Eagles to finish three inside buckets and a free throw in the last seven minutes.
The hosts only shot three free throws in the first half, but hit four of six from behind the arc to help forge the lead. David Volpe, who hit a pair of three pointers in the opening half, banked home a half court shot just after time expired, and the Eastern lead stuck at ten. Ronnie Fields led the Knights at the break with seven.
The second half opened with the visitors swarming on defense, forcing turnovers, and quickly mounting an 11-0 run to take the lead at 34-33. Fields started the run with a lay up and finished it just over three minutes later on a long three pointer on a kick from Nasheed Linton. On the ensuing possession, Malloy was fouled in the act of shooting and missed his first free throw but stopped the Neumann run with his second.
After a Leon Dales basket, Eastern junior Mike Johnson was fouled on a power move inside. Johnson hit the pair to keep the game tied. After Dehran Patrick made his second three of the game to give the Knights a 39-38 lead, Malloy hit a 15 footer to take the lead back. Fields then answered with his third three-pointer to lift the Knights back to a 42-40 advantage. Malloy, who set a career high with 16 rebounds, made both shots on a one-and-one situation to tie the game with eleven and a half minutes left to start an 8-0 run that would give the hosts the lead for good.
First year forward Jason Reels, who started for the injured Ty Coleman, put the Eagles in front on a nice pass from Volpe. After building the lead to eight, the Eagles took the final punch from the Knights as Michael Hitchens scored five straight to cut the defecit to 58-57 with five minutes to play. After empty possessions for both sides, the Eagle broke out in transition,
and Volpe pushed the ball deep in the lane before kicking it to Malloy at the Arch. A 45% shooter from behind the arc on the year, Malloy did not hesitate and drained his only three point attempt of the game. Malloy said of the shot. "I saw David get into the gut and when my man sagged in to help I just got my feet set and my hands ready and David put it right there. I knew it was in as soon as it left my hands."
Up four with four minutes to play, the Eagles still had work to do. Baskets from Johnson and Reels pushed the Eagles to a 65-58 lead, and the Eastern players made 12 of 14 free throws in the final two minutes to earn another shot at Alvernia. Coach Nadelhoffer was pleased with his charges following the game saying, "Matt was enormous for us today. He and Johnson (12 rebounds) took care of the glass, and it was good to see the guys step up and hit free throws. I thought Jason (Reels) played well in his first playoff game. We know that he can be this effective, and know that he will keep getting better."
Reels finished the game with 14 points and 7 rebounds, and was joined in double figures by DiMaria with 15 and Volpe with 10. Johnson picked up five assists and three blocked shots to go with his nine points and 12 rebounds. Fields led the Knights with 20 points. He was joined in double figures for the game by Hitchens with 14, and Fritz and Patrick with ten each. Neumann shot 35% for the game and hit just 8 of 19 foul shots in the second half. Eastern shot 43% for the game, but made 28 of 31 foul shots to secure the win.
The Eagles travel to Alvernia to take on the defending PAC Champion Crusaders at 7:00 Tuesday night.
