2023 CSAC Men’s Track and Field Preseason Poll

Penn-St. Behrend Picked First in CSAC Men's Track & Field Coaches Poll
 

PENN-ST. BEHREND PICKED FIRST IN CSAC MEN'S TRACK & FIELD COACHES POLL

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Penn State-Behrend was selected as the favorite in the 2023 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) preseason poll conducted among the league’s men’s track & field coaches.
 
Behrend collected two first-place votes for a total of 14 points and a first-place finish in the preseason poll.  The Lions won their sixth straight title in 2022 accumulating 302 points in the CSAC Championship meet.
 
Alfred State College comes in a close second place with 12 points and two first-place votes.  Last season’s runner-up looks to close the gap on the Lions.
 
Gallaudet picked up 9 votes for a third-place finish while Keystone accumulated 4 votes to round out the four outdoor track & field programs.
 
Initial outdoor meets began on Saturday, March 18th with Keystone at the King’s College Monarch Invite.  Penn St.-Behrend opens up outdoors Friday and Saturday, March 24-25th at Carnegie Mellon while Gallaudet begins outdoor season at Christopher Newport’s Blue & Silver Challenge on March 25th.  Alfred St. opens outdoor season on Saturday, April 1st at SUNY-Geneseo.
 
The CSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for Saturday, May 6th and Sunday, May 7th hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. 
 
NCAA Division III Championships are hosted by St. John Fisher University at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, NY on May 25-27, 2023.  National qualifiers will be released on Friday, May 19th

2023 CSAC Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week

March 28, 2023

Eric Gregory / Jr / Gallaudet University / Metairie, La. / East Jefferson HS (Track)
Gregory the All-American sprinter from Gallaudet University made a splash in his outdoor season debut. Gregory, the 2022 USTFCCCA National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, won the 400-meter dash in 48.60 seconds and finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.28) at the Blue and Silver Challenge last Saturday hosted by Christopher Newport University. GU's 4x100 meter relay team broke a school record with a time of 42.58 seconds to best the previous best time of 42.59 seconds set in 2019. Gregory was part of both record-setting relay teams. Gregory ran the third leg of the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday. GU also came from behind to beat CNU in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:28.30 seconds. Gregory ran the third leg and made up time for the Bison as he finished the split in just over 47 seconds.

Anand Bhambhani / Sr / Penn State Behrend / Pittsburg, Pa / Mt. Lebanon (Track)
Bhambhwani won the high jump with a height of 1.93m at the Slippery Rock Invitational meet on Saturday.  The jump is an AARTFC-qualifying mark and currently rates as the 24th highest jump in NCAA Division III this season.  Bhambhwani also finished 3rd in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.06. 

Dylan Perlino / Sr / Alfred State College / Holland, NY / Holland HS (Field)
Perlino won the Men’s Discus with a throw of 50.88 meters at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational to open their outdoor season.  Perlino won the event by over 2 meters, with the runner-up coming from Division I University of Buffalo.  His throw of 50.88 is the 2nd farthest throw in NCAA Division III.

Derek Walter competed in the Susquehanna Multi & Easter Invite where he finished in 10th place with an AARTFC-qualifying 5239 points in his first career decathlon. On Thursday, Walter finished the 100m (4th; 11.29), long jump (11th, 5.98m), shot put (12th, 8.85m), and 400m (6th, 52.49).  On Friday, Walter finished the 100m Hurdles (7th, 16.55), discus (16th, 18.71m), pole vault (12th, 2.75m), javelin (6th, 43.11m), and 1500m (7th, 4:53.02).

Dan Dabrowski / Jr / Penn State Behrend / Harborcreek, Pa. / Harbor Creek HS (Field)
Dabrowski won the Men’s Discus with a throw of 51.13 meters at the John Homon Open hosted by Mt. Union on Friday.  Dabrowski set a new Behrend program record with that throw and won the event by almost two meters.  His throw of 51.13 is the 4th-farthest throw in NCAA Division III currently.

Kody Klein / So / Penn State Behrend / North East, Pa. / Cathedral Prep HS (Track)
Klein won two events on the day as Penn St.-Behrend hosted the 2023 Behrend Invitational.  Klein placed first in the 3000m steeplechase setting a CSAC-leading time of 9:49.83 and qualified for the AARTFC meet.  Additionally, Klein ran a leg on the winning 4x800 relay and placed third in the 400m (52.53; 6th in CSAC).

Samuel Hetrick / Jr / Penn State Behrend / New Bethlehem, Pa / Redbank Valley HS (Field)
Hetrick won two events on the day as Penn St.-Behrend hosted the 2023 Behrend Invitational.  In the high jump, Hetrick set a new facility record with a mark of 2.08m.  That mark also ranks #2 in NCAA Division III currently.  Additionally, Hetrick won the 400m (51.40; 3rd in CSAC).  Last season, Hetrick was an All-American in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing eighth in the country.

Gregory won two events last Saturday at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational as he came in first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.49 seconds and the 400-meter dash (48.21). The 100-meter dash event had 60 participants representing all divisions (I, II, III, JUCO) while the 400-meter dash had a field of 51.  Gregory’s time of 10.49 seconds in the 100-meter dash is currently the 10th-best mark in NCAA Division III this season while his season-best in the 400-meter dash (47.43) is good for 10th in NCAA Division III.

Cotis Martinez / So / Gallaudet University / Turlock, Ca. / Denair HS (Field)
Martinez led the way for Gallaudet University men's track and field at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational last Saturday in the field events where he posted a fifth-place performance in the javelin throw with a top toss of 37.78 meters (123 feet, 11 inches).  Martinez’s season-best throw of 39.03 meters is currently 4th-best in the CSAC.

Jason Seevers / Jr / Penn State Behrend / North East, Pa. / North East HS (Track)
Seevers ran a season-best time in the 800 meters at Ashland University this weekend, clocking in at 1:58.04 to place 13th overall.  That mark is good for second-best in the CSAC this season.  Seevers also has the 4th-fastest time in the 1500 meters this season with a mark of 4:19.25. 

Cotis Martinez / So / Gallaudet University / Turlock, Ca. / Denair HS (Field)
Martinez won the javelin throw with a top toss of 41.92 meters (137 feet, 6 inches) last Saturday at the Gallaudet University Invitational.  His toss was four meters more than his top mark set on the previous weekend.  Martinez placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 34.11 meters (111 feet, 11 inches).  Both marks are new season-bests for Martinez and are in the Top 10 in the CSAC Performance List.

WASHINGTON, D.C.
 – The Penn State Behrend outdoor men's track & field team won their seventh straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championships held at Gallaudet this weekend.

Team Scores: Penn State Behrend 307, Alfred State 196, Gallaudet 84, Keystone 8

Noteworthy:

* Head coach Greg Cooper was named the CSAC Outdoor Men's Coach of the Year

Key Moments:

* On the final day of competition, the Lions had one champion and five second-place finishes
Bennett Kerr (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) won the 5000m event with the fastest time of 16:30.43
* Kerr led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 5000m with Aidan Domencic (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) in second, Nick Temel (Conneaut Lake, PA/Conneaut Lake) in third and Joey George (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) in fourth
Samuel Hetrick (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) brought home two silver medals for the Lions
* Hetrick was runner up in the high jump with a 1.91m height and then was second in the long jump (6.69m)
Evan States (Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) and Matthew Laslavic (Evans City, PA/Seneca Valley) competed in the high jump and long jump
* States was third in the high jump (1.81m) and fifth in the long jump (6.21m)
* Laslavic came in fourth in the long jump (6.37m) and sixth in the high jump (1.76m)
* In the 800m, Jason Seevers (North East, PA/North East) had the top time for second place (1:59.49), followed by Temel in third and Kody Klein (North East, PA/Cathedral Prep) in fourth
Max Rohl (Horsehead, NY/Horsehead) led Behrend in the hammer and shot put, claiming second in the hammer (43.33m) and third in the shot put (13.63m)
* Making his debut in the 400m hurdles, freshman Elijah Hunt (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) was runner up with a time of 1:01.57
* States was fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:05.69) to place in his third event for the day
Anand Bhambhwani (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon), Ryan Festa (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham), Marshall Nock (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) and Hetrick had a season-best time in the 4x100m relay to finish third

CSAC ANNOUNCES MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD END-OF-YEAR AWARDS

VILLANOVA, Pa. -  The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) is proud to announce the 2023 All-CSAC Men’s Track and Field End-of-Year Award winners.   Awards include All-CSAC (First Team, Second Team, Honorable Mention, and All-Sportsmanship) as well as Coach of the Year in both men’s track and field.

The All-CSAC team is composed of eligible student-athletes from all four institutions that sponsor men’s track and field.  Athletes earned All-CSAC based upon their finish at the 2023 CSAC Track and Field Championship, May 6-7 at Gallaudet University.

The Track Athlete of the Year was Gallaudet junior Eric Gregory (Metairie, LA / East Jefferson HS).  The 2022 CSAC Track Athlete of the Year and 2022 National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year had another big meet with five wins in five events - 100m, 200m, a new CSAC record in the 400m, a win as the third leg of the 4x100 relay team, and a new CSAC record running the third leg of Gallaudet’s 4x400 relay team.  Gregory is the CSAC-record holder in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x400 relay team. 

The men’s Field Athlete of the Year was Alfred State senior Dylan Perlino (Holland, NY / Holland HS).  Last year’s Field Athlete of the Year, Perlino won the shot put and discus in addition to winning and breaking his own CSAC Championship record hammer throw over the weekend. 

Alfred State also had the men’s Rookie of the Year in Nick Florczak (Buffalo, NY / Depew HS).  Florczak finished second in the 200m, third in the 100m, and the 4x100 relay team finished 2nd as well. 

Coach of the Year for the men went to Greg Cooper of Penn St. Behrend as the Lions won both men’s and women’s team titles in 2023.  This is the men’s 7th straight CSAC championship.
