Penn-St. Behrend Picked First in CSAC Women's Track & Field Coaches Poll

PENN-ST. BEHREND PICKED FIRST IN CSAC WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD COACHES POLL

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Penn State-Behrend was selected as the favorite in the 2023 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) preseason poll conducted among the league’s women’s track & field coaches.
 
Behrend collected four first-place votes for a total of 34 points and a first-place finish in the preseason poll.  The Lions won their fifth title in 2022 over the past six seasons accumulating 246 points in the CSAC Championship meet.
 
Alfred State College comes in a close second place with 32 points and two first-place votes.  Last season’s runner-up looks to close the gap on the Lions.
 
Gallaudet picked up 22 votes for a third-place finish while Cedar Crest collected 20 points for a fourth-place slot.  Keystone accumulated 11 votes and Notre Dame (MD) picked up 7 votes to round out the six outdoor track & field programs.
 
Initial outdoor meets began on Saturday, March 18th with Keystone and Cedar Crest at the King’s College Monarch Invite.  Penn St.-Behrend opens outdoor season Friday and Saturday, March 24-25th at Carnegie Mellon while Gallaudet begins outdoor season at Christopher Newport’s Blue & Silver Challenge on March 25th.  Notre Dame (MD) opens on Friday, March 24th at the Goucher College Blue and Gold Classic.  Alfred St. opens outdoor season on Saturday, April 1st at SUNY-Geneseo.
 
The CSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for Saturday, May 6th and Sunday, May 7th hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. 
 
NCAA Division III Championships are hosted by St. John Fisher University at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, NY on May 25-27, 2023.  National qualifiers will be released on Friday, May 19th

2023 CSAC Women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week

March 28, 2023
Jonquil Loeffelholz / So / Cedar Crest College / Bellingham, Wa. / Sehome HS (Track)
Loeffelholz improved her own school record in the 5000 meters at the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University.  Her time of 21:27.07 cut over 5 seconds off the previous program record, set last year.  Loeffelholz also competed in the 1500 at the Monarch Invitational, hosted by King’s College. 

Kelsee Schouppe / Sr / Cedar Crest College / Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg HS IField)
Schouppe started the season with a pair of top-five finishes in the shot put and discus while just missing the top-five with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at the Monarch Invitational. She had a mark of 9.91 meters in the shot put, 30.75 meters in the discus and 34.93 meters in the hammer throw. At the Jim Taylor Invitational, she registered a mark of 10.17 meters in the shot put, 31.73 meters in the hammer throw, and took eighth in the discus event with a mark of 32.33 meters, defeating multiple Division I and II athletes.

Everett set new program records in both the 100- and 200-meter events at the Muhlenberg Invitational.  The first-year ran a time of 13.92 in the 100m and clocked a time of 29.56 in the 200m.

Midajah Davis / So / Gallaudet University / Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry HS (Field)
Sophomore thrower Midajah Davis won the shot put with a top toss of 11.90 meters and placed second in the hammer throw (29.49 meters) at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland. 

April 11, 2023
Emma Taggart / Sr / Alfred State College / New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key HS (Track)
Emma Taggart competed in the Susquehanna Multi & Easter Invite, completing the heptathlon in 5th place with an AARTFC-qualifying 3985 points. On Thursday, Taggart competed in the 100m hurdles (4th, 15.79), shot put (1st, 10.57m), high jump (2nd, 1.55m), and 200m (8th, 27.80).  On Friday, Taggart competed in the long jump (6th, 4.98m), javelin (14th, 16.79m), and 800m (8th, 2:40.30). 

Allyson Frank / FY / Keystone College / Rio Rancho, N.M. / V. Sue Cleveland HS (Field)
Frank competed in three events on Tuesday’s Misericordia Twilight meet, placing seventh in the javelin, eighth in the discus and 10th in the shot put.  At this point in the season, Frank has Top 10 marks in all three of those throws, including a 30.16m throw in the discus, good for third-best in the CSAC.

Maddy Kappeler / Jr / Penn State Behrend / Cecil, Pa. / Canon-McMillan HS (Track)
Kappeler won four events at the 2023 Behrend Invitational.  Kappeler started the day with two wins on the track; first, in the 100m (13.17; leads the CSAC with a 13.05 mark) followed by the 200m (27.11m; CSAC leader).  Kappeler then won the pole vault with a CSAC-leading mark of 3.25m and finished with a win in the long jump (5.09m; 2nd in CSAC).  Kappeler is a two-time CSAC champion in the pole vault and won a CSAC championship last season in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

Shannon Burns / So / Penn State Behrend / Jefferson, Oh. / Jefferson HS (Field)
The Lions competed in the 2023 Behrend Invitational where Burns won the high jump with a mark of 1.52m; a personal record and the 2nd-best mark in the CSAC outdoor season.  Burns also finished 2nd in the long jump with a 6th-best CSAC mark of 4.62m and 2nd in the triple jump with a 5th-best CSAC mark of 9.45m.

Kelly set the program record in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Coach P Invitational, clocking a time of 16:43.50.  This time is currently 4th-best in the CSAC outdoor season.

Bella Bozen / FY / Cedar Crest College / Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Township HS (Field)
Bozen had a third-place finish in the discus at the Coach P Invitational, hitting a PR of 31.83 meters. That mark is the third-best mark in the conference this season.  She also recorded a mark of 9.46 meters in the shot put which is the eighth-best mark in the conference and a mark of 25.25 meters in the javelin, which is ranked seventh in the conference.

Olivia Nola / So / Penn State Behrend / Erie, Pa. / Collegiate Academy (Track)
Nola broke a 21-year-old program record, running 4:43.52 to win the 1500 meters at Ashland University.  That is the new top time in the CSAC outdoor season.  Nola also has season-best times in the 800 meters (2:21.90) and 5000 meters (17:54.72) while having the 5th-best High Jump at 1.37 meters (4 feet, 6 inches).

Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont (Field)
Wetzel finished first or second in five different events at the Gallaudet University Invitational and broke a school record in the process. Wetzel broke her school record in the triple jump with a top leap of 11.27 meters to win the event. The old mark was 11.16 meters set back on March 25, 2023, at the Blue & Silver Challenge in Newport News, Va. Wetzel had a busy day as she won the long jump (5.21 meters), placed second in the high jump (1.50 meters) and took second in the 200-meter dash (26.69 seconds). She also started the running events as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that took first place.

. – The Penn State Behrend outdoor women's track & field team captured their second straight and fifth overall Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship on Sunday.

Team Scores: Penn State Behrend 253, Alfred State 207, Gallaudet 78, Cedar Crest 61, Keystone 2

Noteworthy:
Olivia Nola (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) was named the CSAC Track Athlete of the Year
Bethany Litwiler (Reynolds, PA/Reynolds) was named CSAC Rookie of the Year

Key Moments:

* The Lions held a 19-point lead heading into the final events
* Behrend finished 1-2-3-4 in the second to last event (5000m) to secure the win
* Nola led the field in the 5000m, winning with a time of 19:02.66 for her second win of the day
* Nola broke the 2:20 barrier in the 800m for the first time to claim the gold medal in 2:19.50
Savanna Carr (Franklin, PA/Franklin) claimed the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:57.99, before finishing second in the 5000m with a time of 19:11.49
* Litwiler claimed second in the steeplechase behind Carr (12:48.61)
Ivy Laffan (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) placed in three events, wining the 400m in 1:00.87 and then taking third in the 200m (27.41) and fifth in the 100m (13.77)
Madison Kappeler (Cecil, PA/Canon-McMillan) paced Laffan in the 100m for first place with a time of 13.33
* Kappeler also was second in the 200m (27.38) and fourth in the long jump (4.98m)
* In the final event of the day, Laffan, Angelina Compeggie (Cecil, PA/Canon-McMillan), Haley Felton (Midway, PA/Fort Cherry) and Victoria Dieterich (Oakmont, PA/Riverview) captured second in the 4x400m relay to seal the victory
* Felton also led the Lions in the 400m hurdles for a silver medal (1:13.62) and Compeggie took fourth (1:22.02)
* Behrend had the 4x100 relay also place second with a season-best time of 51.57 thanks to Felton, Laffan, Dietrich and Kappeler
* In the field events, Paige Massey (Erie, PA/McDowell) was runner up in the shot put (10.72m) and Jessica Park (East Meadows, NY/East Meadows) hit a personal-best throw in the hammer for second place
* Dietrich and Felton also competed in the 400m with Laffan, taking third and fifth, respectively


2023 CSAC End-of-Year Awards Release

CSAC ANNOUNCES WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD END-OF-YEAR AWARDS

VILLANOVA, Pa. -  The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) is proud to announce the 2023 All-CSAC Women’s Track and Field End-of-Year Award winners.   Awards include All-CSAC (First Team, Second Team, Honorable Mention, and All-Sportsmanship) as well as Coach of the Year in women’s track and field.
 
The All-CSAC team is composed of eligible student-athletes from all six institutions that sponsor women’s track and field.  Athletes earned All-CSAC based upon their finish at the 2023 CSAC Track and Field Championship, May 6-7 at Gallaudet University.
 
Penn St. Behrend’s Olivia Nola (Erie, PA / Collegiate Academy) was named CSAC Track Athlete of the Year, after securing wins in the 800m, the 5000m, and setting a new CSAC Championship record in the 1,500m surpassing the old mark by 12 seconds.  Penn St. Behrend also had the women’s Rookie of the Year as Bethany Litwiler (Reynolds, PA / Reynolds HS) won the 10,000m and came in second in the 3,000m Steeplechase.
 
Gallaudet’s Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, CA / California School for the Deaf-Fremont) was named CSAC Field Athlete of the Year.  Wetzel set a new conference, and school, record in the high jump, won the triple jump, placed third in the long jump, won the 200m, and ran a leg on the third place 4x100 relay.  Gallaudet’s Bryon Moore was named Women’s Coach of the Year.
 
Penn St – Behrend won the women’s team championship for the sixth time in the past seven seasons.
