Penn State Berks Wins Second Straight NEAC Women’s Soccer Championship with 3-1 Victory over Penn State Abington
READING, Pa. – The Penn State Berks
Nittany Lions won their second straight North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) Women’s Soccer Championship after defeating
Penn State Abington 3-1 in the finals Sunday.
The Nittany Lions, who were the host and top seed of the
six-team tournament, will now earn an automatic bid to the NCAA
Division III Tournament. They will find out their opponent on
Monday at 1 pm during the NCAA’s live selection show, which
can be viewed here.
Penn State Berks sophomore forward Lizzie Mummau (Mount
Joy, Pa.) was named the Tournament MVP after scoring five
goals across both Nittany Lion playoff victories, including three
in the title game Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, the Nittany Lions (18-2) broke
through for a goal just over three minutes into the second
half. Junior Ellie
McKinstry (New City, N.Y.)
sent a free kick in front of the net and Mummau leaped up and
deflected the ball with her hip into the back far corner.
Precise passes from sophomore Taylor
Schwartz (Souderton, Pa.) led to
assists on the final two goals by Mummau. In the 68th minute,
Schwartz passed the ball through traffic and Mummau redirected the
ball past Abington freshman goalkeeper Margaret Sheridan
(Horsham, Pa.). In the 79th minute, Schwartz flopped the
ball over the defense and deep into Abington territory, allowing
Mummau to chip it over Sheridan’s head and into the back of
the net.
The defensive play by sophomore Dana
Sarcinello (Downington, Pa.)
at midfield and the back row of seniors Emily
Rumpf (Wernersville, Pa.) and
Katie Warner (Fleetwood,
Pa.), junior Caitlin Deibler
(Jamison, Pa.) and sophomore
Brennan Moyer (Wyomissing,
Pa.) held Abington to seven shots, two of which
were on net.
Berks senior goalie Savannah
Cramer (Wrightsville, Pa.)
finished the contest with one save. Her bid for a shutout was
dashed with 20 seconds remaining in the contest after a called hand
ball in the box led to a penalty kick, which Abington junior
Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) converted with a
low liner into the left-hand side of the net.
