GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2016-17 Men’s Lacrosse All-Conference selections with 40 student-athletes receiving honors on the first, second and third team. The NEAC also revealed the four recipients of the annual individual awards, which are determined in a vote by the conference coaches.
Off the heels of earning top rookie honors last season, Morrisville State sophomore Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) has been named NEAC Offensive Player of the Year. The Mustangs’ attacker started 13 games in the regular season, scoring 41 goals and 17 assists for a team-high 58 points. Geswaldo leads all players with 30 goals in NEAC games while 46 of his 58 points came in league play. He also ranks first in the conference with 10 man-up goals on the year. Geswaldo scored at least three goals in 10 games this year, including a season-high six against SUNY Cobleskill. He also posted a single-game high of nine points against Bryn Athyn on Apr. 5. An offensive catalyst each week, Geswaldo was honored by the conference as NEAC Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions this season. This is also the second-straight All-Conference selection for Geswaldo, earning a spot on the NEAC First Team.
Cazenovia College’s Alex Delevan (Jamesville, N.Y.) has been selected as the NEAC Defensive Player of the Year after appearing in all 13 games for the Wildcats this season. Delevan ranks first in the NEAC with 10 wins and a .833 winning percentage, including seven victories against conference opponents. Delevan has allowed 97 goals and enters the postseason with a 9.24 goals-against average. While his overall .553 save percentage ranks third in the conference, the Wildcats’ senior goalie boasts a league-leading .588 save percentage in NEAC games. He has recorded double-digit saves in six games, including a season-high 18 in the regular season finale at SUNY Polytechnic, to reach 120 saves on the year. Delevan, who was named NEAC Defensive Player of the Week twice, was also selected to the All-Conference First Team.
Keuka College freshman Craig Gerhardt (Penn Yan, N.Y.) received NEAC Rookie of the Year honors after leading the Wolves’ offense in his first season. Gerhardt was among the league-leaders all season, ranking fifth in goals (39), fourth in assists (23) and fourth in points (62). He also scooped up 19 ground balls and finished second in the NEAC with eight man-up goals. Gerhardt recorded a point in 12-of-13 games this season, scoring at least four points in 10 games. He tallied a season-high five goals and four assists for nine points in the regular season finale at Wells on Apr. 26. Gerhardt, who is an All-Conference Second Team honoree, is one of seven first-year players to receive All-NEAC accolades.
Cazenovia College Head Coach Kevin Johnson was recognized as the NEAC Coach of the Year for the season time in his career. In the seven years under Johnson’s guidance, the program has shown continuous growth. Johnson and the Wildcats set a new program record this season with 11 wins, including a 7-1 mark in conference play. In hopes of continuing its record-breaking season, Cazenovia will enter the NEAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and serve as a semifinal host. Johnson saw nine players earn All-Conference honors in 2017.
