First Round Action Kicks Off in Women's Volleyball Championship

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East Women’s Volleyball Championship opened up its first round on Saturday afternoon with four matches taking place. In the Skye Division, the tops seeds both produced 3-0 victories with No. 4 Cairn University defeating No. 5 Bryn Athyn College and No. 3 Keystone College defeating No. 6 Saint Elizabeth University. 

In the Volt Division, No. 4 Penn State Harrisburg edged out No. 5 Penn State Berks while St. Mary’s College of Maryland upset No. 3 Penn State Abington, 3-1.

Three different Giants recorded double-digit kills, led by Adrianna Derrick’s 11. Rebecca Jackson and Taylor Hallam were both able to pitch in 10. Dishing out the ball was Tobi West, who finished the day with 33 assists. Hallam pitched in on defense too, registering a trio of solo stuffs.

Caroline Conrad had a monster day for the Highlanders as she hit .245 while registering 17 kills. Olivia Zepp was aiding in the effort as she recorded a team-high 32 helpers. Cairn excelled from the service line as they racked up nine aces, led by a three from Conrad. In the back row, Bridget Dahn notched 17 digs which led all players on the court.

VOLT - #4 Penn State Harrisburg def. #5 Penn State Berks , 3-2 - Box Score

Harrisburg took the first set with relative ease but Berks put the pressure on winning the following two. The Lions evened the match at 2-2 with a fourth set win and finished on the winning end with a 15-9 win in the fifth set. Tori Henderson led Harrisburg with 11 kills and was helped by Carolina Hernandez and Camryn Wettstone who both came away with nine. Defensively, Julia Choe eclipsed the 20-dig mark as she recorded 21 on the day.

SKYE - #6 St. Mary’s College of Maryland def. #5 Penn State Abington , 3-1 - Box Score

A contentious opening set was won by the Seahawks, 26-24, but Abington tied things up as they took set number two. St. Mary’s College regained its footing over the next two sets though, winning both by a score of 25-17. The serve played a large roll in the Seahawk offense with the team finished with 16 aces. Alayna Sievert led the squad with five of her own. Julia Bobrowski did a bit of everything finishing with a team-high 11 kills to go along with 17 digs
