Top Seeds Claim Women's Volleyball Divisional Titles

LATHAM, N.Y. - The championship match is set after Thursday’s Divisional Finals in the 2023 United East Women’s Volleyball Championships. The top seeds from each Division took care of business with Gallaudet University downing Lancaster Bible College in straight sets on the Volt side while Cedar Crest College defeated Notre Dame of Maryland University, 3-1, in the Skye Division.

The two Divisional winners will now square off for the United East Women's Volleyball title. That contest will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Allentown, Pa.

Volt Division - #1 Gallaudet University vs. #2 Lancaster Bible College, 3-0 - Box Score

Gallaudet University advanced to Saturday afternoon’s United East Championship match with a  (25-14, 29-27, 25-22) victory over Lancaster Bible College Thursday evening in Washington DC.  The Bison raced out to a set 1 win 25-14 but found themselves down 22-15 in the second set before a 6-2 run brought it to a LBC set point at 24-21.  Gallaudet fought off 3 set points before ultimately prevailing 29-27 and closing out the third set 25-22.  Natalie Clayberg had a double-double (16 kills, 14 digs), Ella Gamble handed out 31 assists, Leila Sicoli had 22 digs and 2 aces, and Anya Pothorski swung for a .455 percentage (5K, 0E, 11TA).  Lancaster Bible was led by Riley Dodrer who hit .333% on the night (5K-0E-15TA) and Leah Helman who had 22 digs.

Skye Division -  #1 Cedar Crest College vs. #2 Notre Dame of Maryland University, 3-1 - Box Score

The Falcons were able to come away with the victory, downing the Notre Dame of Maryland, 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22). Cedar Crest never dropped the lead in the opening set, but the Gators roared back to tie it up in set number two. Cedar Crest mimicked their opening set with a dominant third and an extremely tight fourth set fell the way of Cedar Crest. The Falcon attack came from all over as Maddison Minyo (11), Ava Graspy (10) and Ziah Melton (10) all ended with double-digit kills. Setting up those attackers was Nikki Blair who recorded 22 assists and Graspy with 17.

Rebekka Sanchez-Castro was dominant in the back row, digging a game-leading 31 balls. Alexis Cummins also pitched in on the defense, ending with 22 digs.
