LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced its 2023 Men’s Lacrosse All-Conference teams as well as its major award winners. All-Conference consists of a First and Second Team made up of 13 student-athletes (3 Attack, 3 Midfielders, 3 Defense, 1 Goalie, 1 Faceoff Specialist, 1 Long Stick Midfielder, 1 Short Stick Midfielder).
The conference has also doled out its major awards, including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Those were awarded to the following:
Offensive Player of the Year - Keegan Preis (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Defensive Player of the Year - Ethan Little (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Rookie of the Year - Joshua Martel (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Coach of the Year - Jason Childs (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Preis was instrumental in leading the Seahawks to many of their wins this season, playing the role of primary distributor. The sophomore racked up 54 assists on the season which led the conference and his assists-per-game (3.18) ranked second. Preis also had a knack for finding the goal as he accumulated 20 goals. His 74 points also led the United East, including a 16-point performance against Wells College. Preis was also tabbed the United East Player of the Week in the penultimate release of the honor roll.
Little was a disruptor of opposing offenses, helping St. Mary’s College allow just 21 goals in conference play. The defender caused 4.06 turnovers per game, which ranked fourth amongst his conference counterparts while his 35 turnovers led the Seahawk squad. When it came to 50-50 balls, Little was able to scoop 50 which was ranked fifth in the United East. One of his top outings came in a win over Hilbert as he scooped five groundballs and caused four turnovers. Little was also named the Defensive Player of the Week twice.
Martel made himself known as a newcomer, playing in 15 games for the Seahawks. The first year was excellent on the man-up opportunity, scoring 12 times which is a tie for the sixth most in Division III. Martel added 21 more goals for 33 on the year, which was the fourth most in the conference. One of his best performances came against Hilbert College as he had 10 points on five goals and five assists. That week he was also tabbed the United East Offensive Player of the Week.
Childs led his squad to a perfect 5-0 record in conference action, earning the Seahawks the Regular Season title in just their second season in the United East. Against conference opponents, his team led the league in numerous statistical categories including goals for (121), goals against (21), margin of win (+20.0) and total groundballs (242). Ten times Childs guided his players to the conference weekly honor roll while also coaching nine players to All-Conference honors.
