Overtime Winners and Late Goals: Four Teams Advance in Men's Soccer First Round

LATHAM, N.Y. - The quarter finals are set after Wednesday’s First Round games in the 2024 United East Men’s Soccer Championships.

#12 Wilson College def. #5 Saint Elizabeth University, 3-2 (OT) - Box Score
Andrew Bailey converted on a direct kick from just outside the box in the last minute of the first overtime to give Wilson the upset victory on the road at Saint Elizabeth University.  Wilson took a 2-0 lead into halftime on Bailey’s penalty kick in the 40th minute and Bryson Curtis’s goal in the 33rd minute.  Saint Elizabeth quickly answered to start the second half with a Brandon Quishpi goal in the 57th and a late equalizer by Sebastian Londono (assisted by Quishpi) in the 76th minute.  A late breakaway and a red card for a denial of a goal scoring opportunity led to the free kick and Bailey’s heroics to end the match.

Wilson outshot Saint Elizabeth 14-10 (6-4 on goal) though Saint Elizabeth had the advantage 12-2 in corner kicks.  Andrew Gonzalez made three saves in net for the Eagles while Logan Neves made two for the Phoenix.

#6 Penn College def. #11 Keystone College, 1-0 - Box Score
A 68th minute goal from Robert Antonini, his first of the year, was enough for Penn College to defeat visiting Keystone College on Wednesday evening.  The Giants defense was stingy, only allowing six shots on goal, but a 14-5 shots advantage for the host, including 6-0 for shots on goal, was too much for the visitors to overcome.  Cole Catherman didn’t need to make a save on the evening for Penn College while his counterpart for Keystone, Landon Keller, stood tall, making five saves.

#10 Lancaster Bible College def. #7 Rosemont College, 3-2 (2 OT) - Box Score
With just over three minutes remaining until the penalty kicks, Dan Marcroft took a long shot from the middle of the field, kept it low, and beat the Rosemont keeper inside the post to give Lancaster Bible a 3-2 double-overtime victory on Wednesday evening at Rosemont.  Lancaster Bible opened the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute by Ben Nolt (assisted by Marcroft), but Rosemont tied it up in the 23rd minute when Luke Humes converted.  Rosemont’s Savien Castro followed up on a penalty save by Lancaster Bible’s goalkeeper Chris Jackson to send the hosts up 2-1 into the half.

Matthew Eufemia had a late equalizer for the Chargers in the 78th minute to make it 2-2 and sent the game into overtime where Marcroft was able to pull out the winner for Lancaster Bible.  Rosemont outshot the Chargers 26-14 (14-8 on goal) but Chris Jackson and Luke Macchione combined to make 12 saves, including 2 in overtime as Lancaster Bible pulled out the road win.

#8 Penn State Brandywine def. #9 Notre Dame of Maryland University, 2-1 (OT) - Box Score
Christian Zavala converted a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime period to lift Penn State Brandywine to a 2-1 (OT) victory over visiting Notre Dame of Maryland University.  A scoreless first half was quickly erased as two quick goals in the second half tied the game 1-1.  First, Omar Simpson took a pass from Christian Zavala at the 65:13 mark and slid it past the keeper to give Brandywine a 1-0 lead.  However, just 85 seconds later, Peer Ewerbeck put back a rebound in the box to even the score for Notre Dame (Md.).

The game settled into an even duel and looked headed to an additional overtime before a foul in the box off a throw-in gave Brandywine the penalty shot.  Notre Dame (Md.) was led by Ewerbeck’s goal and Athanasios Ziliaskopoulos’s 4 shots (3 on goal).  Elijah DeBooth had 5 saves in net for Penn State Brandywine.
