Higher Seeds Advance in Opening Round of Women's Volleyball Championship

LATHAM, N.Y. - The quarter finals are set after Wednesday’s First Round matches in the 2024 United East Women’s Volleyball Championships.

#5 Cairn University def. #12 Wilson College, 3-0 (25--14, 25-10, 25-10) - Box Score

The Highlanders handled their opening round match against Wilson, defeating the Phoenix in straight sets. The offense came from all over by the higher seed but Hendryl Peabody and Bridget Dahn led the way with nine kills a piece. The service restart was also a large part of the win for Cairn as the team amassed 13 aces including three from both Lilliana Magazzu and Delaney Hollenbeck. Olivia Zepp was the Highlander’s main distributor, finishing the night with 32 assists.

Abby Moreland was the main piece on the Wilson side, ending with a team-high six kills and 13 digs.
 

#6 Notre Dame of Maryland University def. #11 Penn State Berks, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) - Box Score

Notre Dame of Maryland defended its home court as it swept Penn State Berks in the opening round of the United East Championship. Seven different Gators recorded a kill during the straight-set win including a team-high eight from Ciarra Bockstie. Defensively, Emma Mueller and Paulina Hernandez held down the back row as they ended up with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

Jordan Thompson’s seven kills led the Nittany Lions while Tarynn Coldren picked up 15 helpers.
 

#7 Penn State Abington def. #10 Cedar Crest College, 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22) - Box Score

Penn State Abington won big in the opening set but were checked in stanza two. The Nittany Lions rebounded with two straight-sets to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. A trio of Abington players hit double-digit kills on the night including 15 from Alyssa Flickinger to lead all players. Hailey Revak was dishing all evening, finishing with 41 helpers. Brynn Atkins did well at the net defensively, registering two solo blocks and assisting on four others.

Cedar Crest was led by Daja Jackson who led the Falcons in both assists (18) and digs (25). 
 

#8 Keystone College def. #9 Saint Elizabeth University, 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18) - Box Score

After splitting the first two sets, Keystone regained its footing as was able to stave off an Eagles upset with commanding wins in the final two stanzas. The Giants hit at a clip of .210 with four different players racking up double-digit kills. Elise Burk was the breadwinner as she not only led the squad with 13 but also picked up a team-high 23 assists. Taylor Hallam also played a major role, recording 10 kills as well as four block assists.

Kristina Ashton had a solid outing for Saint Elizabeth, leading the way with 13 assists and a trio of aces.
 

Quarter final matches will take place on Saturday afternoon with the top four seeds, who all earned first round byes, hosting on campus.  Number 1 seed Gallaudet University hosts No.8 Keystone College and No. 2 seed Lancaster Bible College hosts No. 7 Penn State Abington.  Number 3 seed St. Mary’s College of Maryland welcomes No. 6 Notre Dame (Md.) University while No. 4 Penn State Harrisburg has a matchup with No. 5 Cairn University
