TROY, N.Y. – The 2024 campaign for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team ended Saturday afternoon (May 11) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. St. Mary's College (14-7) dropped a 15-5 decision to No. 2 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (17-2).
How It Happened
- RPI owned a 4-0 lead with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter before junior attackman Aiden Doyle (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard a minute later, finishing off a pass from senior captain Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney). Cooper Manzi returned a four-goal lead to the Engineers with an unassisted tally at 1:26.
- The hosts grew their lead to 8-1 as RPI scored the first three goals of the second period. Doyle once again stopped the Engineers' run, this time putting the finishing touches on a Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) dish at 10:14. Both sides went quiet until Cooper Roman notched an unassisted goal at 2:54.
- SMCM won the ensuing face-off and went down to score its third of the game as Doyle found McGrain with 1:47 remaining in the first half. RPI headed into halftime with a 9-3 advantage.
- The third frame belonged to the Engineers as they shutout St. Mary's College and used a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 14-3 at the end of three.
- The Seahawks took advantage of an extra-man opportunity, tallying the first goal of the final quarter as first-year Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) passed in the ball to sophomore attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) at 13:21.
- Ten minutes later, junior midfielder Nate Hochrein (Towson, Md./Towson) picked up an unassisted goal for SMCM's final goal of the game. Manzi scored the Engineers' final goal of the game with 43 ticks on the clock.

- Rensselaer notched a 47-35 margin in shots while gaining a 39-31 advantage in ground balls.

- Luke Murphy tallied a game-best six points on two goals and four assists while Roman notched a three-goal hat trick.
- Angelo Venuto was 11-of-13 at face-off X with six ground balls.
- Joseph Perry made 13 stops in the Engineers' third straight win.
