NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Penn State Harrisburg women’s soccer repeated their late game heroics in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship as they defeated #11 Rowan University, 1-0, in Newport News, Va. on Sunday evening. The win pushes Harrisburg's record to 16-5-4 on the year while the Profs wrap up their season with a record of 13-2-5.
With the historic victory, the Lions move on to their first-ever Sweet Sixteen where they will square off against the University of Mary Washington. The location of that contest will be determined after the conclusion of the Second Round with Tufts University and Middlebury University joining the pod.
After winning their First Round match in the 87th minute, the Lions caused even more stress to their fans as the sole goal of this game came in the 88th minute. Earning two-straight corner kicks in the waning moments, the second one was cleared out of the box by the Profs. The clear landed on the foot of defender Kylie Yap who one-timed volleyed it and sent a looping ball back in. The ball went far post and beat the keepers reach to clinch what would be the game-winning goal.
The game was pretty even as shots were 9-8 in favor of Rowan. The three shots the Prof put on target were all saved courtesy of Alexis Valenta who notched her 10th win on the season and her eighth of the shut out variety.
