Harrisburg's Historic Run Comes to Close in NCAA Third Round

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Penn State Harrisburg women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, to the University of Mary Washington (14-3-5) Saturday afternoon in the Third Round of the 2025 NCAA Championship hosted by Middlebury University. With the result, the Lions conclude their historic season with a record of 16-6-4.

Making it the furthest in the National Tournament than any United East women’s soccer has before, the Lions posed a comeback that fell just short. Mary Washington scored one in the 20th minute in the first half and then doubled up their lead with a goal in the 56th minute. Harrisburg, no stranger to late game heroics, began their comeback bid in the 75th minute. Earning a free kick in the offensive zone, Julia Hughes sent a lined ball into the box. The ball found the head of Abigail Frew, who flicked a header by the keeper. The header goal was the second of the same variety from Frew this tournament as she scored in a similar fashion in the First Round win over Christopher Newport University. Harrisburg pressed to get the equalizer over the final 15 minutes but were unable to connect.

Alexis Valenta picked up a pair of saves in the defensive battle.
