Top Seeds Prevail in Women's Basketball Championship Opening Round

LATHAM, N.Y. - All of the top seeds prevailed as the 2025 United East Women’s Basketball Championship kicked off on Wednesday evening. Notre Dame of Maryland University upended Wilson College, 65-57, in the early slate and Penn State Harrisburg took care of business against Lancaster Bible College, 60-51, not too much later. Saint Elizabeth University finished with a 72-56 lead over Keystone College and Bryn Athyn College rounded out the day with a 79-31 victory over Cedar Crest College.

Those four teams will move on to the quarterfinal round where they will square off against the top-four seeds, who all received byes. Those games will take place on Saturday with times still yet to be determined.

#7 Notre Dame of Maryland def. #10 Wilson College, 65-57 (BOX SCORE)

The Gators came out hot as they held a 17-11 lead after one quarter of play. They maintained that offense through the second but also upped the defense and found themselves with a 35-19 lead going into the intermission. Wilson did not back down though, eventually tying things up with just under 5 minutes in regulation. Notre Dame remained clutch at the charity stripe down the stretch and that was what ultimately settled the contest.

Amani Watts had a monster game for Notre Dame, posting a double-double with 29 points and 12 boards. The Gators did well to spread the ball around as well, accruing 17 assists on the game including six from Amya Durham (who also registered 13 points.

Wilson had a trio of players hit the double-digit point mark, led by Allie Cullison who topped the squad with 14. The Phoenix conclude their season with a record of 10-16.

 

#6 Penn State Harrisburg def. #11 Lancaster Bible College, 60-51 (BOX SCORE)

A 22-point fourth quarter highlighted by a 12-1 run helped last year’s Champions secure a spot in the quarterfinals as the Lions and Chargers played a tight one in Middletown, Pa. The starting five for the Lions played nearly every minute and scored all but two points. Jordan Carpenter led the way with an 18-point performance that was accented with a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Mikayla Coleman also pitched in 16 points, nine coming from downtown.

Serene Caldwell did a bit of everything for the Chargers, leading the squad with 18 points while also racking up five assists and three steals. Lancaster Bible finishes the year with a record of 10-15.

 

#8 Saint Elizabeth University def. #8 Keystone College, 56-72 (BOX SCORE)

A 12-4 run near the end of the second quarter helped widen the lead for the higher seed and the Eagles rode that lead all the way to the final buzzer. Paige Neal played a large role as she had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) shooting over 60% from the field. Yasminah White was the primary source of offense for Saint Elizabeth as she had 21 points to partner with five assists. Underneath the hope, Laila Kendle was all over the place as she hauled in an impressive 16 boards to lead all players on the court.

Anyah Ortiz had a solid outing for the Giants, scoring 19 points and just one board shy of achieving the double-double. Keystone concludes its season with a record of 16-9.
 

#5 Bryn Athyn College def. #12 Cedar Crest College, 79-31 (BOX SCORE)

The Lions stifled the Falcons in all four quarters, allowing just two points scored in the first and fourth combined. Ten different players registered a bucket for Bryn Athyn including a team-high 20 points from Zhymani Smith. Alayna Day was right behind Smith with an 18-point showing. Underneath the hoop, Alex Osago-Mensah rallied in a team-leading 10 boards. The Lions also finished with 23 steals collectively.

Caylie Long led Cedar Crest as she ended the evening with 12 points. The Falcons finish their season with a record of 8-11.
