St. Mary's College Defends Men's Lacrosse Title

ST. MARY’S CITY, MD. - The top-seeded St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team lifted their fourth-straight United East Championship trophy Saturday afternoon as they defeated No. 2 Penn College, 21-8, in the Final.

Along with earning the title of conference champions, the Seahawks also have earned the automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Championship. The selection show for that is at 9 PM on Sunday.

The Wildcats came out firing, putting up two quick goals on the defending champions in the early minutes of the opening quarter. The Seahawks answered back with nine unanswered, taking a 9-2 lead into the halftime intermission. The home side piled in four more before Penn College halted the offense with one of their own halfway through the third. The Seahawk scoring pause was only momentarily though as they took a 17-3 lead into the final stanza. Penn College mustard some offense in the final quarter outsourcing St. Mary’s College 5-4, but the efforts couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Nine different Seahawk players netted a goal, led by Declan Horton who topped all scorers with six. Just behind him was Aiden Doyle who notched five of his own. Feeding these goal scorers was Keegan Preis, who tallied four assists as well as a goal.

The offense was spurred by faceoff success as the top seed won 23 of the 33 restarts. Mateo Ciccarello played a large role in that success as he won 15 of his 19 faceoff attempts. Joe Szymanski helped on that face off effort as he scooped up a game-leading nine groundballs.

Cullen McKay collected the win between the pipes as he stopped seven Wildcat shots.

First year Elliot Dotson had a solid outing for Penn College, finishing with three points on one goal and two assists. Owen Kupskey led the squad with a pair of goals.
