Second Half Surge Powers Seahawks to NCAA Opening Round Victory

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. - The St. Mary’s College men’s lacrosse team defeated Pfeiffer University, 18-9, Wednesday afternoon in the Opening Round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Championship. The win moves the Seahawks’ record to 10-7 on the season while the Falcons conclude their year with a record of 15-4.

The victory also earns St. Mary’s College a trip to the Second Round of the Championship where they will stay in state as Salisbury University will be their next matchup. That game will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This game was neck-and-neck through the first half. Pfeiffer jumped on the home team with a pair of quick goals, but the Seahawks answered with two of their own. The two sides continued to exchange scores throughout the first two stanzas with St. Mary’s edging the Falcons, 6-5, at the intermission.

The goal exchange continued through the third quarter as the Seahawks held a slight 10-9 lead with just under five to go but then the Seahawk defense stepped up. Through nearly the final 20 minutes of the contest, St. Mary’s College didn’t allow Pfeiffer a single goal, all while piling in eight of their own.

All seven players who netted a score for the Seahawks came away with multiple goals, led by Aiden Doyle, who notched four and assisted on two others. Jake Levey and Gavin McKay both registered a hat trick while Keegan Preis picked a pair of assists and a pair of goals.

Helping spark that offense was the work put in at the restart. Matteo Ciccarello went 14-23 at the faceoff “X” while Drake Erisman secured 4-6 attempts.

Defensively, Joe Murray had a monster game as he dislodged the ball five times from the Falcons wile also scooping five groundballs. He had help from United East Defensive Player of the Year, Joe Szymanski, who caused a trio of turnovers and collected a team-leading seven gbs.

Cullen McKay recorded the win between the pipes, stopping nine Falcon shots.
