NEAC Announces 2011-12 Women’s Basketball All-Conference Selections

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2011-12 Women’s Basketball All-Conference Team selections, with first, second and third team honors being awarded to the top 15 players as selected by the conference coaches.

The NEAC has also selected its regular season award winners.  SUNY Institute of Technology junior Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y.) was selected as the NEAC Player of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to program-best records of 15-2 in the NEAC and 21-4 overall, which granted them the top overall seed and the right to host this weekend’s NEAC Championship Tournament.  The 5-foot-5 guard averaged 18.2 points on 47 percent (158-for-335) shooting from the field, placing her third in the conference in both categories, while also ranking second in both 3-pointers made (66) and 3-point percentage (37.7) and fifth in free throw percentage (76.3).  Brognano, who was twice named the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week this season, was also named to the All-Conference First Team.

The NEAC’s inaugural Rookie of the Year award went to Wells College freshman Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii).  The 5-foot-4 guard appeared in all 25 Express contests this season and ranked fifth in the conference in total assists (83), sixth in steals (59) and 14th in total points (278), while being first in each of those categories among all rookies.  She also helped Wells to eight victories this season, which doubled their win total from last year’s inaugural season.

College of Saint Elizabeth’s Nicole Degenhardt was selected by her peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year after guiding the College of Saint Elizabeth to a second place finish in the NEAC South Division with a 13-5 record, while finishing 16-9 overall.  She also helped the Screaming Eagles secure a postseason spot in the NEAC Championship Tournament, where the team will host a playoff game for the first time ever when they square off against Lancaster Bible College in the quarterfinals tonight at 7 p.m.
