2012 Men’s Tennis West Division Individual Tournament Winners & All-Conference Selections

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wrapped up its two-day North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division* championships with individual tournament play Sunday, which consisted of the top-four seeded student-athletes for first through sixth singles and first through third doubles.

Each flight saw the No. 1 seed take on the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed take on the No. 3 seed. The first-round winners advanced to the championship round, which produced six singles position champions and three doubles position champions, with those student-athletes also making up the All-Conference First Team.  The runner-ups from those flights made up the All-Conference Second Team, while the All-Conference Third Team consisted of the winners of each flight from the consolation bracket.  All three All-Conference teams can be viewed below.

The NEAC also announced its individual awards at the conclusion of the tournament, which was held at the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa.  Penn State Harrisburg junior Joshua Cartmill (Carlisle, Pa.) was named the Player of the Year after winning the first singles championship.  Cartmill defeated Lancaster Bible College junior Phil Smock (Pottstown, Pa.) 6-0, 6-0 in round one before getting by Penn State Abington junior Nigel Hopkinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) in two sets (6-1, 6-2) in the championship.  He finished the season a perfect 4-0 in division play and earned one Student-Athlete of the Week honor on the year.

The conference’s inaugural Rookie of the Year honor went to both Penn State Abington freshman James Howell (Abington, Mass.) and Penn State Harrisburg freshman Vishnu Gopalakrishnan (Ashburn, Va.).  Howell earned All-Conference Third Team honors in fifth singles and All-Conference Second Team honors in third doubles, while finishing the regular season 10-3 in singles play.  Gopalakrishnan finished the season 3-1 in division play and 6-4 overall, while also being selected to the All-Conference First Team for sixth singles and the All-Conference Second Team for second doubles.
