GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern
Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2013-14 Women’s
Basketball All-Conference Team selections, with First, Second and
Third Team honors being awarded to the top 15 players as selected
by the conference coaches.
The NEAC has also selected its regular season individual award
winners, as voted on by the coaches. For the second straight
season, Wells College’s Ashley Roser (Taberg,
N.Y.) was named the NEAC Player of the Year after another
phenomenal season for the Express. A DIII News
Preseason All-American Honorable Mention, Roser posted a
league-best 19 double-doubles behind averages of 22.5 points and 13
rebounds per game in addition to 2.3 steals and 2 blocks per game
through 25 Express contests. The senior forward totaled a
conference-best and program-record 562 points this season, which
placed her as the NEAC’s all-time leader in career points
while also making her the only player in conference history to
reach 2,000 points. Roser also hauled in a league-best 324
rebounds, which helped her become just the third player in NCAA
Division III history to reach career totals of at least 2,000
points and 1,350 rebounds. In the current national rankings,
she stands as the active NCAA DIII leader in career points, scoring
average and rebounding while being sixth nationally on the season
for double-doubles and eighth in scoring.
A five-time NEAC Player of the Week selection this season, Roser
helped lead the Express to their first-ever NEAC North Division
regular season championship en route to also being named to the
All-Conference First Team. She will now enter this
weekend’s NEAC Championship Tournament with 80 career
double-doubles, leaving her just three shy of the all-time NCAA
DIII record.
The NEAC Rookie of the Year honor went to Morrisville State
College freshman Jordan Anderson (West Edmeston,
N.Y.) after an outstanding season for the Mustangs.
Anderson started all 25 contests at point guard for the Mustangs
this season while leading the squad in points (13.4), assists
(3.0), steals (3.6) and minutes (35.6) per game in addition
grabbing 3.8 rebounds per contest. Her steals average also
led all NEAC rookies and currently ranks 10th across all of NCAA
Division III, helped in part by an 11-steal performance earlier
this season that tied the single-game conference record and earned
her a NEAC Player of the Week selection. Anderson was also
dynamic at getting to the hoop, as she made the second-most free
throws in the conference with 120 while shooting the fifth-best
percentage from the charity stripe at 71 percent.
Lancaster Bible College’s Doug Helsel was
voted by his peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year for the second
straight time after another tremendous effort in leading the
Chargers this season. Helsel guided the Chargers to their
second straight NEAC South Division title behind a perfect 16-0
season, marking 23 straight conference wins dating back to last
season’s NEAC championship run. The Chargers, who
finished the regular season 20-5 overall, will now host their
second straight NEAC Championship Tournament after earning the top
overall seed in the six-team playoff field.
