PENN YAN, N.Y. – For the fourth time in
the past six seasons, the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors
won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men's Golf
Championship after carding a two-day score of 626 (324-302) during
play on Friday and Saturday at the par-72 Lakeside Country
Club.
As the NEAC champion, Rutgers-Camden receives an automatic bid
to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held May
13-16 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
Heading into the day in first place, the Scarlet Raptors held
off SUNY Cobleskill, which made a strong push with the day's best
score of 299 to finish in second place by two strokes with a 628
(329-299) overall score. The Fighting Tigers received
excellent performances from senior Travis Deuel
(Queensbury, N.Y.) and freshman Ian Wilson
(Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) throughout the weekend, as Deuel
finished with a two-day score of 151 and claimed individual
medalist honors after winning a one-hole playoff with Penn State
Berks sophomore Tyler Massar (Lebanon, Pa.).
The win landed Deuel as the NEAC Golfer of the Year, capping off a
tremendous season in which he earned two NEAC Golfer of the Week
selections. Wilson, also a two-time NEAC Golfer of the Week
honoree, claimed the NEAC Rookie of the Year award after being the
top first-year finisher with a score of 154 that placed him fourth
overall. Both student-athletes claimed All-Conference First Team
honors for their efforts.
Additionally, SUNY Cobleskill head coach Joseph
McCarthy was voted by his peers as NEAC Coach of the Year
after leading the Fighting Tigers to seven top-five finishes during
the regular season, including two invitational victories, in
addition to this weekend's second place finish.
Senior Pete D'Angelo (Delran, N.J.) led
Rutgers-Camden with a 153 to finish third individually, while
juniors Kevin Sarlo (Burlington Township, N.J.)
and Nick Baird (Delran, N.J.) each shot a 156 to
finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Senior Tom
Schultice (Delanco, N.J.) placed 12th after shooting a 162
and junior Kevin Anderson (Delran, N.J.) placed
14th after carding a 163 to round out the top Scarlet Raptor
performers, with all five making the NEAC All-Conference Team.
Penn State Berks took third place with a team score of 653
(334-319), while Penn State Abington placed fourth with a score of
656 (326-330) and Morrisville State College finished fifth at 705
(349-356). Host Keuka College finished sixth at 740
(379-361) and Cazenovia College placed seventh (DNF).
The 2013-14 All-Conference Teams were also announced shortly
following the conclusion of the championship, with the top 15
individual performers from the two-day event making up the First,
Second and Third Team, respectively. Conference tiebreakers
