NEAC Announces 2014-15 Men’s Tennis All-Conference Selections and Individual Award Winners

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2014-15 Men’s Tennis NAC West Division* All-Conference selections, which were determined during the individual tournament that was held at the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa. on Thursday and Friday.

The individual tournament consisted of the top-four seeded student-athletes for first through sixth singles and first through third doubles.  Each flight saw the No. 1 seed take on the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed take on the No. 3 seed. The first-round winners advanced to the championship round, which produced six singles position champions and three doubles position champions, with those student-athletes also making up the All-Conference First Team.  The runners-up from those flights made up the All-Conference Second Team, while the All-Conference Third Team consisted of the winners of each flight from the consolation bracket.

The NEAC also announced its individual award winners at the conclusion of the tournament Friday.  Penn State Abington freshman Mohammed Ammouni (Bensalem, Pa.) earned the Player of the Year award after an excellent performance in the tournament.  Slotted as the No. 2 seed in first singles, Ammouni defeated Penn College junior Jordan Rodgers (Biglerville,Pa.) 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before taking down Penn State Berks junior and reigning two-time player of the year Drew Weinhold (Denver, Pa.) in a thrilling championship match that took a pair of tiebreakers to decide.  Ammouni won set one 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker before again winning 7-6 with a 7-2 tiebreaker to earn the award, which annually goes to the winner of the first singles flight.

After a coaches’ vote, Ammouni was also named the Rookie of the Year, capping off a terrific season in which he went 6-4 in first singles and 8-3 in first doubles during the regular season. He was also the first player in program history to advance to the Round of 32 in singles play at the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional Championship earlier this fall, which also earned him a NEAC Player of the Week honor that same week.

Penn State Abington’s David Sheaffer also earned his second straight Coach of the Year award after a vote by his peers.  Sheaffer led the Nittany Lions to their second straight NAC West championship after also claiming the regular season title with a 5-0 divisional record while going 10-3 overall.
