NEAC Announces 2015-16 Women’s Basketball All-Conference Selections and Individual Award Winners
GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2015-16 Women’s Basketball All-Conference selections, with First, Second and Third Team honors being awarded to the top 18 players regardless of position as selected by the conference coaches.
The NEAC has also announced its women’s basketball individual award winners, which were also selected by the coaches.
For the second straight year, Lancaster Bible College senior Aubrey Folger (South Berwick, Maine) was named the NEAC Player of the Year after another outstanding season for the playoff-bound Chargers. The senior leads the conference in scoring at 22.6 points per game on a NEAC-best 59 percent shooting mark from the field, with both marks also nationally ranking fourth and eighth, respectively, across all of NCAA Division III. Her average of 9.4 rebounds per game also ranks eighth in the conference and helped her record 12 double-doubles on the year, while her 25 blocks in 23 games this season leads the team. Folger also reached multiple milestones during the season, as she became the first player in program history to reach 2,000 career points while also reaching 1,000 career rebounds to make her the first Charger to ever do both. A four-time NEAC Player of the Week honoree this season that gave her 10 total selections during her illustrious career, Folger also earned a spot on the NEAC All-Conference First Team for the fourth consecutive year.
Joining Folger as an individual award winner was Lancaster Bible College head coach Katelyn Vanderhoff, who was selected by her peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year. Vanderhoff had an excellent debut season at the helm for Lancaster Bible, as she guided the Chargers to their fourth straight South Division regular season title with a 19-1 NEAC record while going 22-3 overall. The success in conference play garnered the Chargers the right to host the Final Four portion of the NEAC Championship Tournament this weekend while also landing four LBC players on the NEAC All-Conference Team. Vanderhoff’s Chargers also currently lead the conference in points per game, assists per game, rebound margin per game, shooting percentage and free throw shooting percentage.
Rounding out the individual award winners was Penn State Abington freshman guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.), who was selected as the NEAC Rookie of the Year after a terrific inaugural campaign for the Nittany Lions. Rodriguez burst onto the scene by setting multiple scoring records for Abington, as she first set the program rookie record for points in a game back in December before topping that with a single-game program-record 40 points on Jan. 17. For the season, Rodriguez ranked second on the team and eighth in the conference in scoring after averaging 17.4 points per game, while also sinking the 10th most 3-pointers (53) to go with 6.5 rebounds per game through 23 contests. Her play helped guide the defending conference champion Nittany Lions back to the NEAC Tournament while also making her the only freshman selected to the NEAC All-Conference Team.
