Rutgers University-Camden Wins Fifth-Straight NEAC Men's Golf Crown
Huntingdon Valley, Pa. – The Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors won their fifth-straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Golf Title after posting a total score of 617 (308-309) at the two-day event, which was hosted by Bryn Athyn College at the Philmont Country Club North Course. Rutgers University-Camden will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, which will take place May 16-19 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The Scarlet Raptors led play during both days of the tournament and placed four student-athletes in the top seven of the 44-golfer field. Seniors Kevin Sarlo (Burlington, N.J.) and Ryan Dick (Collingswood, N.J.) finished just one stroke behind the first-place finisher to tie for second place individually with final scores of 151 (74-77). Fellow senior Zach Arsenault (Medford Lakes, N.J.) placed fourth with a final score of 155 (79-76), while sophomore Cory Meyer (Bordentown, N.J.) finished seventh with a score of 160 (81-79).
Penn State Abington’s Mike Lam (Langhorne, Pa.) was honored as the NEAC Golfer of the Year as the individual medalist from the two-day championship with a final score of 150 (76-74) after besting the rest of the field by three strokes of the second day of competition. Lam, who was also the NEAC Golfer of the Year in 2015, was the Nittany Lions lone representative in the top 10 as Penn State Abington finished third with a total team score of 660 (328-332).
Penn State Berks placed second overall with a team score of 643 (325-318) with sophomore Matt Thompson (Collegeville, Pa.) leading his squad with a score of 157 (80-77) to earn a fifth-place individual finish. Freshman Ethan Cairns (Quarryville, Pa.) tied for 10th with a score of 164 (83-81), but received the last spot on the All-Conference Second Team due to conference tiebreaking procedures. Cairns was also named the NEAC Rookie of the Year as the top first-year finisher at the event.
Penn State Berks head coach Rick Bausher was also recognized as the NEAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career after a vote of his peers. Bausher, who is in his second season at Penn State Berks, has sparked a tremendous turnaround with his program. In his first season, the Nittany Lions placed seventh at the NEAC Men’s Golf Championships before improving their finish by five spots this season.
Penn College placed fourth with a score or 669 (326-343) while SUNY Cobleskill rounded out the top five with a score of 675 (347-328). Full team results can be found here, while individual results can be found here.
The 2016-17 NEAC Men’s Golf All-Conference selections were also announced shortly following the conclusion of the championship, with the top-15 individual performers from the two-day event making up the First, Second and Third Team, respectively.
