Rutgers University-Camden Wins Eighth NEAC Men's Golf Championship
STEVENS, Pa. – After a sizeable lead at the end of round one, Rutgers University-Camden used another strong showing on Sunday to earn its eighth North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Golf Championship at the two-day event hosted by Penn State Berks at the Foxchase Golf Club. The Scarlet Raptors will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, which will take place May 14-17 at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
Rutgers University-Camden had a 20-stroke lead over defending champion Penn State Berks at the end of Saturday’s round. The Scarlet Raptors posted a 293 on Sunday to finish with a total score of 607 and win the conference title by 39 strokes. Senior Richard Stolz (West Deptford, N.J.) was honored as the NEAC Men’s Golfer of the Year after shooting a 148 (77-71) over the weekend to finish as the individual medalist. In addition to his individual award, Stolz also topped the NEAC All-Conference First Team. Stolz was a league standout throughout the season and received four NEAC weekly awards prior to this weekend’s win. The Scarlet Raptors represented four of the five All-NEAC First Team selections as Sean Sigall (Sicklerville, N.J.), Sean Hughes (Washington Township, N.J.), and Andrew Gutierrez (Cranford, N.J.) finished in the top five. Rutgers University-Camden head coach Bob Cardea was also named the NEAC Coach of the Year, marking the sixth time in his career that he has received the annual honor as voted on by his fellow coaches.
Penn State Berks scored 334 points on Saturday before totaling 312 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 646 for second place. The NEAC Runner-Up was led by All-Conference First Team honoree Andrew Cornish (Limerick, Pa.) who finished in third place with a weekend score of 152. Matt Kreider (Lititz, Pa.) and Dan Fieger (Denver, Pa.) also received All-Conference honors with tournament scores of 161 and 164, respectively.
Penn College finished third for the second-straight year with Ned Baumbach (Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Brian Whelan (Cresco, Pa.) leading the Wildcats in a tie for seventh place. Austin Moscariello (New Columbia, Pa.) rounded out Penn College’s trio of All-Conference Second Team selections with a weekend score of 164. As a team, the Wildcats finished with a total score of 658.
Keuka College freshman Ryan Murrelle (Sayre, Pa.) took home the NEAC Rookie of the Year award as the top first-year finisher at the 2019 championship event. Murrelle finished tied for 12th place with a total score of 165 (87-78) and is the first player in program history to win the award.
Penn State Abington placed fourth with a score of 679 (352-327) while SUNY Cobleskill rounded out the top five with a score of 686 (357-329). Full results from the championship event can be found here.
The 2018-19 NEAC Men’s Golf All-Conference selections were also announced shortly following the conclusion of the championship, with the top 15 individual performers from the two-day event making up the First, Second and Third Team, respectively.
