United East Athletes of the Week - October 23, 2023

LATHAM, N.Y. -  The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for October 23, 2023.  This includes Athletes of the Week for both the Skye and Volt Divisions in Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Volleyball. 

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, October 16 through Sunday, October 22.  A total of 12 student-athletes were recognized for their performances.

 
 
Men’s Soccer

Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Hernan Godoy / Jr / Keystone College / Bernardsville, N.J. / Bernards HS

Godoy added two goals to lead Keystone to a 1-0-1 week. He scored the game winner in a 2-1 win over St. Elizabeth to keep their United East postseason hopes alive on Wednesday afternoon.  Against Wilson on Sunday, Godoy scored in the 11th minute as the Giants held onto a 2-2 draw and secured a spot in the playoffs.  Godoy was a 2021 CSAC Second Team selection.

Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Gerson Navarro / FY / Wilson College / Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park HS

Navarro continued to help the Phoenix and went unbeaten on the week with a win over Valley Forge and a draw against Keystone. Against the Patriots he made three saves on six shots faced before making six stops on eight shots faced against the Giants.  The First Year stepped in between the posts last week after an injury and has provided stability for the Phoenix as they finish the season.

Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Arsene Bado / Jr / Penn State Abington / Ouaga, Burkina Faso / Abington HS

In a 1-0-1 week for the Nittany Lions, all against conference opponents, Bado registered three goals and one assist.  He recorded his second straight hat-trick in the 9-0 victory at Penn State Berks where he scored three goals and assisted on another for seven points.  Abington capped the week with a 0-0 draw at Penn State Harrisburg. Bado is currently Top 5 in major offensive categories for the United East including Goals (3rd: 10), Assists (4th: 6), and Points (3rd; 26).  This is the second straight Player of the Week honor for Bado who was a 2022 All-United East First Team performer. 

Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Matt Sheldon / Sr / Penn State Abington / Perkasie, Pa. / Pennridge HS

Abington finished 1-0-1 this past week against conference opponents… Sheldon played the first half of the team's 9-0 victory at Penn State Berks where he made one save… He recorded his third shutout of the season in the 0-0 draw at Penn State Harrisburg making four saves in the game.  He now has 50 saves on the year and has lowered his GAA to 1.06.  This is the second Athlete of the Week honor for Sheldon; who previously won for the week of October 9, 2023.
 

Women’s Soccer

Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Kira Bradley / So / Bryn Athyn College / Levittown, Pa. / Neshaminy HS

Against two of the top four teams in the division, a 4-1 W over Cairn and a 3-1 W over Wilson, Bradley was an impressive playmaker accounting for 5 of the 7 goals for the Lions this week. Her 1 goal and 4 assists on the week puts her tally to 24 goals and 9 assists which leads the league in both categories.  Bradley was previously Offensive Player of the Week for October 9, 2023, September 12, 2023, and was a Honorable Mention honoree in 2022.

Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Shea Gormley / Jr / Bryn Athyn College / Huntingdon Valley, Pa. / Abington HS

Gormley anchored the defense for the Lions to two wins in a big conference week against two of the top four seeds in the upcoming Skye Division playoffs. Gormley helped the Lions defense only surrender 12 shots on goal for the week. The junior center back also logged a big goal in the 3-1 win over Wilson on Saturday.  This is the second Player of the Week honor for Gormley, who previously won the award for the week of October 24, 2022.

Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Kaylynn Sheetz / Sr / Pennsylvania College of Technology / Elizabethtown, Pa / Elizabethtown HS

Tallied 11 points across two games against Keuka and Gallaudet. Began the week with a goal and two assists against the Wolves and recorded her third hat-trick in the first half against Gallaudet to go along with an assist to lead the Wildcats against the Bison. Her seven points against the Bison are her highest single-game point total this season. This is the fifth Player of the Week honor for Sheetz (September 18, 2023, September 26, 2022, October 3, 2022, October 24, 2022) who was a First Team All-United East honoree in 2022 as well.

Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Kylie Wells / Jr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Middletown, Md. / MIddletown HS

Kylie Wells posted a 3-0 record, was part of three shutouts, and notched a 0.00 GAA in 225 minutes of action. Wells recorded two solo shutouts (2-0 vs. Bryn Mawr and 1-0 vs. Penn State Berks) and a combined shutout vs. Gallaudet (playing 45 of 70 minutes). She made three saves to help the Seahawks to a 1-0 win over Berks.  This is the second Player of the Week honor for Wells who previously won for the week of September 12, 2023. 
 
 
Women’s Volleyball

Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Kristina Ashton / Jr / Saint Elizabeth University / Colonia, N.J. / Colonia HS

Kristina had 50 assists in the Eagles match against CCNY; a five set come from behind win that yielded 60 team kills.  She also added a kill and a service ace of her own and had 16 digs.  In the match against conference opponent Cairn, she notched 20 more assists to her impressive week‘s total.  She missed the match against Keystone, but is within striking distance of 1000 career assists as a junior.  Ashton currently ranks 7th in the United East with 6.77 Assists per Set.

Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Samantha Lipp / FY / Bryn Athyn College / Perkasie, Pa. / Pennridge HS

Lipp was one of the best defensive players in all of Division III this past week after being recognized by D3Data for Digs per set. Lipp logged a total of 65 digs including a season high 49 digs against Keystone on 10/17/2023. Lipp averaged 9.2 digs per set and is currently 8th in the United East with 4.02 digs per set on the season.

Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Jayla Hickey / FY / Penn State Abington / Tampa, Fl. / Bloomingdale HS

In a 2-0 week for the Nittany Lions, Hickey averaged 3.33 kills per set after totaling 30 on the week.  She highlighted the week with a career-high 17 kills in the team's victory against Centenary.  She followed that up with 13 kills in the win at Penn College.  Hickey committed just seven attack errors on the week off a combined 62 attempts that netted her 30 kills and a .371 percentage. Hickey is currently 4th in the United East with 186 total kills, 4th with 3.35 points per set average, and 5th in the United East with a .269 swing percentage.

Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Julia Bobrowski / So / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / California, Md. / Leonardtown HS

Julia Bobrowski put up career-bests of 28 digs and four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) in a tough 3-2 loss to Lancaster Bible. Bobrowski also hit .323 vs. Eastern Mennonite with 10 kills and no errors. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Bobrowski who previously won for the week of October 16, 2023.
