General 12/12/2023 10:00:00 AM United East Athletes of the Week - December 12, 2023 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for December 12, 2023. This includes Athletes of the Week for both Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, December 4 through Sunday, December 10. A total of 4 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Week Eric Gregory / Sr / Gallaudet University / Metairie, La. / East Jefferson HS Gallaudet University senior sprinter Eric Gregory (Metairie, La.) set several school records to begin the 2023-24 indoor track and field season. Gregory won the 60-meter dash with a new school record time of 6.93 seconds at the Holiday Kickoff Open hosted by Shenandoah University on Dec. 3. Gregory broke his own school record and erased the 6.96 mark set back on March 4, 2023, at the South Region Final Qualifier. Gregory qualified for the 60-meter final after a preliminary time of 6.95 seconds. Gregory also won the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.19. Several days later, Gregory was a member of the first-place 4x400 meter relay team that improved on a school record with a time of 3:27.58 at the Bow Tie Invitational hosted by Ursinus College. Gregory won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.16 seconds. Field Athlete of the Week Walter Douglas / So / Gallaudet University / Sanford, Fl. / Florida School for the Deaf and Blind Gallaudet University junior jumper Walter Douglas (Sanford, Fla.) erased a 33-year-old school record in the long jump as he jumped 6.64 meters (21 feet, 9.5 inches) to finish third overall at the Bow Tie Invitational last Friday night. Douglas broke Michael Cross Jr.'s old school mark of 6.63 meters (21 feet, 9 inches) set on Feb. 16, 1990, in Blacksburg, Va., at the Mason-Dixon Championship. Douglas was also of Gallaudet's first-place 4x400 meter relay team that set a new school record with a time of 3:27.58. Women’s Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Week Leah Gray / Sr / Penn State Harrisburg / Windsor, Ct. / Windsor HS Leah Gray made program history at the Diplomat Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Friday evening. The senior bested 40 other runners and was victorious in the 60m dash, setting a new program record in the event with an effort of 7.91 seconds - a time strong enough to rank her 34th in the nation. She also earned a third-place finish in the 200m dash out of 39 competitors with a time of 26.99 seconds. Field Athlete of the Week Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont Gallaudet University senior jumper Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) continues to raise the bar on her own school records in the long and triple jump events. Wetzel started the indoor season at the Holiday Kickoff Open with a long jump record of 5.24 meters. Several days later, Wetzel improved on her mark with a leap of 5.32 meters (17 feet, 5.5 inches) as she won the event at the Bow Tie Invitational hosted by Ursinus College last Friday night. At the same Bow Tie Invitational meet, Wetzel took first in the triple jump with a top jump of 11.19 meters (36 feet, 8.5 inches) to improve on her old school record of 10.92 meters (35 feet, 8.25 inches) set on March 4, 2023.
