United East Athletes of the Week - September 26, 2023

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for September 26, 2023.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Field Hockey, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Tennis, and Men’s Tennis.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, September 18 through Sunday, September 24.  A total of 7 student-athletes were recognized for their performances.
 


Field Hockey

Offensive Player of the Week
Maria Tomada / Sr / Keystone College / Buenos Aires, Argentina / San Vicente de Paul
Tomada added two goals and two assists in a 1-1 week for Keystone as the Giants picked up a victory over Gwynedd Mercy and fell to Marywood.  Tomada is currently 3rd in the United East with 4 goals while sitting atop the United East leaderboard with 5 assists and 28 total shots.  Tomada was a Second Team all-conference selection in 2021 and a First Team selection in 2022.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Amanda Hoover / So / Lancaster Bible College / Bowmansville, Pa. / Garde
Hoover tallied 11 total saves including 10 saves in the Chargers 3-0 loss to Sweet Briar on Friday.  Hoover followed the Sweet Briar game with a shutout against Southern Virginia. Hoover was the 2022 CSAC Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-Conference, and Defensive Player of the Week for October 3, 2022 during her debut collegiate season.

 
 
Women’s Cross Country

Runner of the Week
AyliGrace Munro / So / Cairn University / Bar Harbor, Me. / Mount Desert Island HS
Munro placed 1st overall for the second race in a row, competing in the Bryn Athyn Invitational, with a time of 16:52.4 as she led her team to a 1st Place finish. Munro finished 2022 a First Team All-CSAC performer after finishing in 2nd place in the Championship meet.  This is the sixth Athlete of the Week award for Munro who was previously honored on the week of September 12, 2022, September 26, 2022, October 10, 2022, September 11, 2023, and September 18, 2023..
 


Men’s Cross Country

Runner of the Week
Patrick O’Donnell / Sr. / Penn State Berks / King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion HS
Patrick O'Donnell led Berks to a third place finish this past weekend at the Bud Smitley Invitational hosted by Penn State Harrisburg.  The senior finished in first place out of 29 runners with a time of 16:18.1 on the 5K course.  O’Donnell is a two-time First Team honoree (2021, 2022) as well as Runner of the Week for the weeks of October 26, 2021 and October 11, 2022. 

 

Men’s Tennis

Player of the Week
Cooper Wheeler / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Red Lion, Pa. / Red Lion HS
Cooper Wheeler led the way for Penn State Harrisburg in an 8-1 victory over Albright on Wednesday afternoon. The freshman teamed with Andrew Schreck to earn an 8-4 victory in the top doubles matchup before cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles outing to improve to 2-0 in solo action on the young season.
 


Women’s Tennis

Player of the Week - Skye Division
Katherine Franzone / Sr. / Cedar Crest College / Mount Bethel, Pa. / Pennsylvania Cyber Charter
Franzone went 1-2 at the top singles spot for the Falcons, earning her lone victory against Eastern in a 6-3, 6-1 triumph. Franzone was a First Team honoree in 2022 and 2023  as well as Player of the Week in April 11, 2023 and April 4, 2023.
 
Player of the Week - Volt Division
Allison Wootton / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Portage, Mi. / Portage Northern HS
Wootton was Penn State Harrisburg’s top individual performer in the team's narrow 5-4 setback against Albright on Wednesday afternoon. The freshman teamed with Breanna DeSantis to secure a come-from-behind 8-7 (9-7) victory in the No. 1 doubles contest before staying perfect on the day with a 6-3, 7-6 win in the top singles matchup. With the wins, Wootton improved to 4-0 overall on the young season.
