United East Athletes of the Week - January 22, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. -  The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for January 22, 2024.  This includes Athletes of the Week for both the Skye and Volt Divisions in Men’s and Women’s Basketball as well as Men’s Volleyball.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, January 15 through Sunday, January 21.  A total of 10 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. 


Men’s Basketball

Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Dejuan Taylor / FY / Rosemont College / Columbia, Md. /

In a 1-1 week for the Ravens, Taylor averaged 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 59% from the field.  Against Saint Elizabeth, Taylor had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals in 31 minutes while shooting 7-14.  In the win over Clarks Summit, Taylor had 20 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists in 35 minutes.  This is the first Player of the Week honor for Taylor.

Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Ibraheem Bundu / Sr / Wilson College / Bowie, Md. / Largo HS

Bundu's efforts helped Wilson come back from being down 10 points in the second half to force overtime and eventually defeat St. Elizabeth to avenge an earlier season loss against the Eagles. Bundu finished with 13 points, 11 of which was in the second half, 5 rebounds, four blocks and two steals with two of the blocks coming in the overtime period. Bundu currently leads the United East with 1.6 Blocks per Game.  This is the first Player of the Week honor for Bundu.

Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Grant Sareyka / Sr / Lancaster Bible College / Swedesboro, N.J. / The Christian Academy

Sareyka averaged 27.5 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game, 3 steals per game, 2 assists per game while shooting 60-percent from the field (18/30) and 52-percent (10/19) from three in the Chargers two games this week. The Chargers went 1-1 on the week winning by their fourth largest win margin in program history against Penn State Brandywine (98-35) before losing to Harrisburg on Saturday, 80-72. Sareyka is sitting fourth for points per game in the conference (21.6) while top five in field goal percentage (50-percent).  This is the fourth Player of the Week award for Sareyka who previously won for the week of January 15, January 2, 2024 and November 13, 2023.

Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Micah Henry / So / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Laurel, Md. / Hammond

Micah Henry poured in a game- and season-high 24 points while dishing out three assists, collecting a career-high three blocks, and adding two steals in a tough 70-66 loss to Penn State Harrisburg. Henry then chipped in eight points, a career-best five steals, four assists, and two caroms in the 20-point win over Penn State Abington. Henry is 16th in the United East averaging 14.9 points pre game. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Henry.
 


Women’s Basketball

Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Caylie Long / FY / Cedar Crest College / Powder Springs, Ga. / Hillgrove HS

Long averaged 25 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Cedar Crest. The first-year poured in a season-high 27 points on 11-for-13 shooting to go along with five rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in a 59-51 win over Keystone. Long then tallied 23 points on 11-for-18 shooting and added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a 70-59 loss to the Giants. Long has now notched 20-plus points in three straight games. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Long, who previously won on the defensive side for the week of January 15, 2024.
 
Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division
Ella Quince / FY / Cairn University / Morrisville, Pa. / Morrisville HS

Quince had 2 blocked shots and 4 steals against Wilson on Wednesday and then on Saturday, she followed-up with 3 more steals and grabbed 10 defensive rebounds in a double-double performance (10 points, 13 rebounds).  On the week, Quince averaged 11.0 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game, and totaled 7 steals and 3 blocks.  This is the first Player of the Week honor for Quince who is currently 8th in the United East averaging 2.8 steals per game.

Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Rajena Guettler / Sr / Gallaudet University / Frederick, Md. / Maryland School for the Deaf

Guettler had a career week as she tallied 33 points, 17 rebounds, six steals, five assists and one block in two wins for the Bison in conference play. Last Saturday, the senior guard had a career game as she led the Bison with 25 points (a new career-high) and tied career marks with 12 rebounds and 11 field goals made. Guettler added one steal and assist in 38 minutes played. Earlier in the week she had a solid all-around game with eight points, five rebounds, five steals, four assists and one block in only 25 minutes played at home against Penn St.-Berks.

Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division
Kaya Mobley / Jr / Penn State Abington / Coopersburg, Pa. / Penn St.-Lehigh Valley

In a 2-0 week for the Nittany Lions, Mobley dominated the boards as she averaged 17.0 rebounds per game, highlighted by a 21-rebound performance in the win at St. Mary’s.  Mobley became just the fourth player in the program's Division III era to total 20-plus rebounds in a game and earlier in the week Mobley totaled 13 boards in the win at Penn College. For the week, Mobley totaled 34 rebounds with 26 coming on the defensive end while also averaging 7.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Mobley who is currently 5th in the United East averaging 1.3 blocks per game. 

 

Men’s Volleyball

Offensive Player of the Week
Dawson Forney / Jr / Lancaster Bible College / Lititz, Pa. / Warwick HS

Forney led the Chargers with a season-high 15 kills in the win over Penn State Altoona and another 8 in the match against Elizabethtown as Lancaster Bible swept the tri-match on Saturday.  Against Elizabethtown, Forney swung at a .636 attack percentage (8K-1E-11TA) and came back in the nightcap against Altoona to swing for a .423 percentage (15K-4E-26TA).  This is the first Player of the Week honor for Forney, who was a 2nd Team All-Conference honoree in 2023.

Defensive Player of the Week
Ben Latham / So / Lancaster Bible College / Orange Park, Fl. / Oakleaf HS

Latham picked up 22 total digs on Saturday as the Chargers swept the tri-match with Penn State Altoona and Elizabethtown.  The libero anchored the defense with 10 digs against Elizabethtown and another 12 against Altoona. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Latham.
