United East Athletes of the Week - October 21, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for October 21, 2024.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Volleyball.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, October 14 through Sunday, October 20.  A total of 8 student athletes were recognized for their performances.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Emma Watkins / Jr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Frederick, Md. / Linganore HS

    Emma Watkins tallied five goals, including one game-winner, in a 3-0 week for the Seahawks. Watkins started the week by matching her career-high with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-0 win at Wilson. She then equaled her career-best once again with two goals in a 7-0 victory over Meredith. Watkins ended the week with a goal in a 3-0 shutout of Keystone to gain sole possession of the top spot in the league standings.

    This is the second Player of the Week award for Watkins, who previously won for the week of September 16, 2024.  Watkins is currently second in the United East with 9 goals and second in Total Points (10) during conference play.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Jena Vanskiver / Jr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Fallston, Md. / Fallston HS

    Jena Vanskiver notched a goal and an assist plus one defensive save in a 3-0 week for the Seahawks. Vanskiver dished out an assist in a 7-0 win over Meredith before scoring the game-winning goal and collecting a defensive save in a 3-0 win over Keystone to take sole possession of the top spot in the league standings.  Vanskiver leads the United East with 6 defensive saves.

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Vanskiver, who is a two-time Second Team All-Conference honoree.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Zach Blaum / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Richmond, Va. / Atlee HS

    Zach Blaum tallied a goal and an assist in a 2-0 week for the Seahawks. Blaum picked up an assist in the team's 6-3 win over Notre Dame (Md.) before netting the game-winning goal in a 1-0 key road win over regionally ranked Penn State Harrisburg, scoring the game-winner at 86:56. This is the first Player of the Week for Blaum.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Xander Jakeway / So / Cairn University / Lancaster, Ca. / Quartz Hill HS

    Jakeway picked up two conference shutouts this week, collecting 11 saves against Rosemont on Wednesday in a 4-0 offensive showing and directing a great defensive effort against Keystone on Saturday where the Highlanders won 3-0 for the seventh-straight win. Jakeway is tied for second most shutouts in the United East with three and is third with a 1.091 Goals Against Average.

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Jakeway, who was named Third Team All-Conference last season while Cairn played in the Skye Division of the United East.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Madison McDowell / Sr / Penn State Abington / Philadelphia, Pa. / Council Rock South HS

    In a 2-0-0 week against conference opponents, McDowell totaled four goals and one assist for nine points.  She tallied three goals and an assist in the team's shutout victory against Penn State Brandywine.  She capped the week with what turned out to be the game-winning score in a 2-0 victory against Cedar Crest College.  The win over the Falcons officially clinched a postseason berth into the United East Tournament. 

    This is the first Player of the Week award for McDowell, who earlier this season, became Penn State Abington’s all-time leading scorer and leader in career points.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Cicely Clark / Sr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial HS

    Cicely Clark handed out three assists and was part of a defensive unit that recorded two shutouts. Clark dished out a career-best three assists in the Seahawks' 7-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.) while holding the Gators to no shots and one corner kick. She then helped the SMCM defense hold regionally ranked Penn State Harrisburg scoreless on nine shots (four on goal) and six corner kicks.

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Clark, who is a three-time All-Academic selection.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Brielle Worley / So / Gallaudet University / Amarillo, Tx. / Amarillo HS / UT-Tyler / University of North Texas

    Worley, the nation's top player in kills and points, continued to add to those totals last week as the Bison finished a perfect 3-0 slate, including two wins over conference opponents. For the week she compiled 55 kills with a .404 hitting percentage, 23 digs, seven aces and four blocks (two solo). In a five-set thriller at Penn St.-Harrisburg she recorded a double-double with a match and season-high 25 kills and 13 digs. She added 11 kills against Penn College and 19 vs. McDaniel in a home tri-match during the homecoming weekend. She only had one attack error in each of those matches.

    Across the country, Worley is 1st in NCAA Division III in Points (488.0), 1st in Total Kills (429), 3rd in Kills per Set (4.82), 3rd in Points per Set (5.48), and 6th in Total Attacks (952).  This is the fourth Player of the Week award for Worley, who previously won for the weeks of October 14, 2024, September 30, 2024, and September 9, 2024.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Stella Marrero / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Pleasant Prairie, Wi. / Christian Life School

    Stella Marrero racked up 79 digs, 11 assists, 8.0 points, and seven service aces in a 2-1 week for the Seahawks. Marrero notched a career-best 28 digs in a 3-2 road win at Notre Dame (Md.) while adding three assists, one kill, and an ace. She tallied 24 digs, five assists, and two aces in a 3-2 road loss at Hood. Marrero finished out the week with 27 digs, four aces, and three assists in a 3-1 win over Cairn.

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Marrero.
