General 10/7/2024 2:30:00 PM United East Athletes of the Week - October 7, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for October 7, 2024. Today will include Athletes of the Week for Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Volleyball. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, September 30 through Sunday, October 6. A total of 8 student athletes were recognized for their performances. Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week Kate Seymour / So / Wilson College / Churchton, Md. / Southern HS Seymour had a fantastic week with two goals and three assists to help the Phoenix in wins against Goucher and Keystone. Against the Gophers on Monday, Seymour was a figurehead in four goals as she scored one herself and made assists on three others in a high scoring affair. In the conference opener, Seymour had Wilson's lone shot in the game and made it count as the Phoenix went on to defeat the Giants 1-0. Seymour has now scored goals in four consecutive contests. This is the second Player of the Week award for Seymour who previously won for the week of September 19, 2023 and earned a First Team All-Conference award last season Defensive Player of the Week Erin Sullivan / FY / Wilson College / Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley HS Sullivan was pivotal in a pair of wins as Wilson defeated Goucher and Keystone on the week. On Monday she made seven saves on 21 shots faced as the Phoenix defeated the Gophers 7-3. She followed up with seven more saves in the conference opener, a 1-0 victory over Keystone in which the Giants had the bulk of the offensive chances in the game. This is the frist Player of the Week award for Sullivan. Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Jesse Brittain / Sr / Cairn University / Chester, Pa. / The Christian Academy Brittain had a career week for the Highlanders in two games totaling four goals and two assists on the week. First, he had an assist on the game-winning goal for the Highlanders on Wednesday night at Lancaster Bible College where he added the final Cairn goal in the team's 4-1 win on the road. Brittain followed up with a hat trick (the fourth of his career) and an assist in Saturday's home conference match with Penn State Brandywine. Brittain now ranks second on the United East for points (18) averaging 2 points per game. This is the fifth Player of the Week honor for Brittain who previously won for the weeks of September 9, 2024, October 16, 2023, September 7, 2021, and September 27, 2021. Brittain is a three-year First Team All-Conference award winner as well as the CSAC Rookie of the Year for 2021. Defensive Player of the Week Sean Horvay / Sr / Penn State Abington / Philadelphia, Pa. / Archbishop Ryan / Chestnut Hill Abington went 2-0-0 this past week with a pair of 1-0 victories against Penn College and Keystone College. Horvay was a key component to the Abington defense that limited the Wildcats to just six shots (1 on-goal) and held the Giants without a shot. It marked the first time in the program's Division III era that the Nittany Lions held an opponent without a shot. Prior to Saturday, the closest Abington ever came to holding an opponent without a shot was at Bryn Athyn College during the 2018 season. The Lions only posted two off-target shots in a 5-0 Abington victory. This is the first Player of the Week award for Horvay. Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Julia Hughes / So / Penn State Harrisburg / Middletown, Pa. / Middletown HS Julia Hughes had a big week helping lead Penn State Harrisburg to a pair of conference victories. In a 5-0 win at Wilson on Wednesday night, the forward scored one goal and helped on another. During a 6-0 shutout of Cedar Crest on Saturday afternoon, the sophomore tallied a pair of markers and recorded two more assists. For the week, Hughes racked up nine total points on three goals and three helpers. This is the first Player of the Week award for Hughes who currently ranks 3rd in the United East with 5 assists. Defensive Player of the Week Kyleigh Bland / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Arnold, Md. / Broadneck HS Kyleigh Bland recorded two shutouts in her two appearances this week, helping the Seahawks to a 1-0-1 week. Bland faced 15 shots and turned away a season second-best seven shots in a scoreless draw with Mary Washington to begin the week. She then saw five shots, making three saves to lead SMCM to a 2-0 win over Lancaster Bible. This is the first Player of the Week award for Bland who is currently 2nd in the United East with a .316 Goals Against Average. Women’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week McKinley Grimm / FY / Penn State Abington / Liberty Hill, Tx. / Brentwood Christian School In a 3-0 week, including a pair of wins against conference opponents, Grimm averaged 8.55 assists per set along with 3.91 digs per set on the defensive side. She highlighted the week with 38 assists: one shy of her season-high, in the team's come-from-behind victory at Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Nittany Lions trailed 2-0 in the match before winning the final three sets to take the match in five sets. Grimm also recorded a season-high 27 digs in the win over the Gators. Earlier in the week Grimm totaled 31 assists and eight digs in the win over Marywood and totaled 25 assists and eight digs in the win against Penn State Brandywine. This is the second Player of the Week award for Grimm, who previously won for the week of September 23, 2024. Defensive Player of the Week Fabiola Medina / FY / Penn State Abington / Caguas, Puerto Rico / Academia del Perpetuo Socorro In a 3-0 week, including two wins against conference opponents, Medina averaged an impressive 6.64 digs per set after totaling 73 for the week. She also committed just one reception error on 47 total attempts in the three matches. She highlighted the week with a season-high 40 digs in the team's 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Nittany Lions trailed 2-0 in the match, before winning the final three sets. As a result, Abington extended its win streak to nine straight; the longest in the program's Division III era. In the conference opener versus Penn State Brandywine, Medina totaled 20 digs and three aces. This is the first Player of the Week award for Medina, who is currently 6th in the United East in both Service Aces (46) and Digs per Set (4.72).
