Seahawks Conclude Field Hockey Season in Opening Round of NCAA Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The St. Mary’s College of Maryland field hockey team fell XX-XX to Christopher Newport University Wednesday evening in the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Championship. With the result, the Seahawks conclude their season with a record of 10-11 and the title of United East Champions.

The Seahawks found themselves in a hole early as the Captains scored a trio of goals in the first stanza. Brenna Ziegler had a chance to cut the lead but her shot was saved. Christopher Newport added one more before the half and St. Mary’s College went into the half down 4-0.

The defense stood tall in the second half, keeping the Captains off of the scoresheet but the Seahawks were unable to score any of their own, eventually falling 4-0.

United East Rookie of the Year, Sophia Kent, stopped seven saves across 22 minutes of play but was relieved by Caroline McDonald. McDonald would finish the day with nine saves and no goals allowed.
