St. Mary's (Md.) Crowned 2024 United East Field Hockey Champions

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East crowned a field hockey champion on Saturday afternoon as St. Mary’s College of Maryland defeated Keystone College on the campus of St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  With the win, St. Mary’s (Md.) has earned the automatic qualifier to the upcoming NCAA Championship.

St. Mary’s (Md.) will learn their host location and future opponent during the NCAA Selection Show which premiers on Sunday, November 10th at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland defeated Keystone College 5-1 on Saturday afternoon to claim the United East Tournament Championship and the automatic qualifier to the upcoming NCAA Championships.  The Seahawks were led by Charlotte Horn’s two first quarter goals to help the Seahawks take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.  Sofia Lopez added a third goal for St. Mary’s (Md.) five minutes before the half while Briana Allen and Emma Watkins each added a goal to contribute to the final scoreline.

The game started fast for visiting Keystone College as Belen Rodriguez opened the scoring just 49-seconds into play to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.  This was the first goal allowed by St. Mary’s (Md.) in league play, regular season and tournament, during the 2024 season. However, Horn’s first goal came just fifty-seven seconds later to tie the game.  The rest of the first quarter was even before Horn’s second goal came three seconds before the end-of-quarter buzzer sounded. 

Shots were 20-17, 9-4 shots on goal, in favor of the home team though Keystone had more corner opportunities with an 8-7 margin.  Sophia Kent from St. Mary’s (Md.) and Hannah Osbahr from Keystone each made three saves, respectively, on the afternoon. Charlotte Horn was named Tournament MVP after her two-goal performance.
