United East Athletes of the Week - December 16, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for December 16, 2024.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Men’s and Women’s Basketball.  This week’s selections included contests from Monday, December 9 through Sunday, December 15.  A total of 4 student athletes were recognized for their performances.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Jordan Carpenter / Gr / Penn State Harrisburg / Chester, Va. / Matoaca HS / University of Mary Washington

    Jordan Carpenter had another big week in leading Penn State Harrisburg to a 2-1 record. The graduate student posted a pair of double-doubles and averaged 21.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. She netted 26 points in a win over Gwynedd Mercy on Monday night, including the game-clinching free throws with two seconds remaining. She followed it up with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double in a win at Delaware Valley on Thursday before capping off the week with 22 points and 20 rebounds in a setback at Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.

    This is the fifth United East Player of the Week award for Carpenter this season, who has previously won for the weeks of December 9, 2024, December 2, 2024, November 25, 2024, and November 18, 2024.  This season, Carpenter leads the United East averaging 21.8 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 64.5 % from the field. Nationally, Carpenter ranks 2nd in double-doubles with eight, 3rd in total points (240), 3rd in total rebounds (137), 5th in offensive rebounds per game (5.5), and 6th in free throws made (62).

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Anyah Ortiz / So / Keystone College / Reading, Pa. / Governor Mifflin

    Ortiz grabbed 17 rebounds while registering 11 steals and one block in a perfect 2-0 week for Keystone. The sophomore guard came up big defensively in the comeback win over Wilkes on Saturday as she flirted with a triple-double where she had 18 points, eight steals, and seven rebounds. She recorded a double-double in Friday's contest with The City College of New York as she scored 14 points with 10 rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot. 

    This is the first defensive player of the week award for Ortiz. She was a Second Team All-United East - Skye Division selection a year ago. 

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Isaiah Eggleston / Sr / Penn State Harrisburg / Roanoke, Va. / Carlisle School / St. Mary’s (Md.) College

    Isaiah Eggleston turned in his best all-around performance of the season in Penn State Harrisburg's non-conference win over Bridgewater (Va.) on Saturday. The senior posted a double-double with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with game bests of six blocks and four assists, as well as a pair of steals. 

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Eggleston who is currently fourth in the United East with 17 total blocks and a 1.7 blocks per game average.  Additionally, Eggleston is Top 20 in the league for total points (16th; 135), points per game (19th; 13.5), rebounds per game (15th; 5.9), field goal percentage (16th; 41.9%), and free throw percentage (4th; 83.9%).

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Cam’Ron Martel / Jr / Saint Elizabeth University / Houston, Tx. / Alief Elsik HS

    In a 1-1 week for the Eagles, Martel would go on another defensive tear for the Eagles, averaging 14 boards, including 18 in a win on vs. St. Joseph‘s Brooklyn, on Tuesday, 12/9. Martel would also pick up two blocks, and a steal on the week, while also averaging 21 points.

    This is the third Player of the Week award for Martel, who previously won for the weeks of November 18, 2024, and January 8, 2024.  Martel is currently 2nd in the United East averaging 10.4 rebounds per game and totaling 104 rebounds on the season while sitting 5th in the league with 14 total blocks and 1.4 blocks per game.
